Anytime I see someone in public driving a new or newer car, I can't help but think that they are likely living above their means in crazy debt. Not everyone is, but it's hard to not think that when you drive by any low-mid level income apartment complex with $60-85k cars sitting in the parking lot. I do not understand the obsession with constantly being in a $600 a month loop for your entire life to drive a 'nice car'. I'm over here driving a 12 year old truck to avoid debt and I bring in $130k per year. When I was 18 I fell victim to this new car mentality and quickly ended up with a $500/month payment for 5 years. I STRUGGLED to make that happen, even had help at some points from my parents just so I could survive making that payment. In retrospect that was a good experience because it taught me to responsibly buy cars. Everything I have owned since that car has been used off of Craigslist or Marketplace and paid in cash. One of these days I may treat myself, being a car guy, but not anytime soon.

I think to a degree we all care what people think of us. But mostly, I care about how my car looks, feels and sounds. Cleanliness helps to keep the mind at peace. My priorities though, we’re in the wrong place. Now I’m focused on my money and could give a shit if my car is clean or not.

This is why I NEVER feel bad when hearing ppl hear about how they "never have money" because I know 90% of them choose to live life to impress their friends.

If your household income is 150k a year and you can't make it you need a hard reset. Time to move and completely change your life. My wife and I make a little over half that and we are living a great life.

I feel like the main problem here was not thinking about finances at all. Some people, their parents aren't good with money so they can't teach them how to handle it, so no matter how much you make, you spend it all. It's good to see him taking the first step here, hopefully he and his wife can get on track.

My parents were good with money but in a way that is totally impractical. Like taught me how to plan around a pension and how to use a fuel man card and how to get the most out your company car. Buying municipal bonds stuff that just does not exist anymore
