Bakatue is a festival celebrated by the Elmina people to commemorate the founding of Elmina and to honor the sea god, Nana Benya
The festival is celebrated annually on the first Tuesday of July in Elmina, Ghana
Bakatue is translated to "the opening of the lagoon" or "the draining of the lagoon"
The festival has been celebrated for over 150 years and is considered as an important part of Elmina's history and culture
During the festival, the Paramount Chief and the entire state of Elmina offer food to Nana Benya and pray for peace
The festival is marked with processions, addresses by chiefs and invited guests, and the casting of a net three times into the Brenya Lagoon by the chief priest.
