My parents insisted on four years of violin lessons for me, as they were very conservative, only classical or/religious tunes were allowed at home. I brought home a Frankie Valli 45 "Shari" and my father took it away and broke it in front of me. Yeah, they could be pretty harsh and controlling. But my highschool sweetheart gave me Led Zeppelin IV vinyl as a birthday gift. I had to hide it under my bed. I took it to my violin teacher and instead of rebuking me, her eyes lit up. She told me to just hold on and she was going to show me something. She borrowed a mixtape from her daughter, which contained several classical piano pieces by Bach, but interwoven with pieces from Led Zeppelin. She picked up her violin and started playing the melody to a piece she'd given me to learn earlier, and she made it fit right along with the tape. All she had to do was adjust her timing and match the pitch and the melody line I'd learned last year fit perfectly, with both Bach and Zeppelin. I was astounded, almost in tears, I'd never met anyone who had done this, (remember this was 1975!) and she just patted my shoulder and told me that good music comes from everywhere. Jimmy was inspired to write this song after hearing that George Harrison (from The Beatles) said that the problem with Led Zeppelin was they didn't have any ballads. He even quotes the opening chords of Harrison's song "Something" in the opening here. It had a working title of "slush" due to its soft rock leanings. This song had its beginnings in Jimmy's new home studio and I love how he kept the acoustic fret squeaks intact for added intimacy. Jonesy used a Mellotron Mark II and Steinway piano while Bonzo did indeed use brushes and sticks. This song is moody, melancholy, and triumphant all at the same time. It is a perfect example of Led Zeppelin's ability to create songs of "light and shade". Absolutely moving and gorgeous.
JPJ is the orchestra. He is playing all that on a Mellotron. I've always interpreted this song as the seasons of life. He is young in the springtime. As he gets older, he is in his summer. When he gets old, he felt the coldness of his winter. When you die, a little rain falls. "Upon us all, a little rain must fall."
i've always been fascinated by retro-tech. (dad was a computer service guy in the 60's and 70's, when computers were big and primitive). the way inventors accomplished things before modern technology was so ingenious. the mellotron used tape loops of recorded musical instruments, so that when you pushed a key, a corresponding tape would engage and play that note. it was like having an orchestra at your fingertips. people of earlier generations were just as crafty as we are. they just had simpler tools to work with, and they made the most of it.
