FRLG's Soundfont is really rare these days, since people lean more to RSE, but this is just insane how well it's put together. This is easily the best remix I've heard of this track by a mile.
@@leovl1697 It's the same soundfont, it's just the chosen instruments for both games are a little different. Go Ichinose (who Arranged Area Zero and Battle! Area Zero) handled all of the Arrangements in FRLG. RSE was arranged with Junichi Masuda, Go Ichinose, Morikazu Aoki, and others. Specifically the percussion used is the biggest difference, namely the kick drum and snare, which is much more intense and hard hitting in FRLG (That is what makes me greatly prefer FRLG).

This soundfont REALLY lends itself to this theme. I never know how to describe it, but when a melody sounds like it’s breaking apart with how powerfully it’s being played, it ALWAYS gets me. It feels incredibly emotional, and there’s something about both gen 3’s trumpets and area zero’s theme that get there. I’d call it warbly but that doesn’t convey the intense feeling it has for me.
warbly is an okay word for it. personally, i'd say it's screaming so loud it can barely get the sound out right, in an extremely good and emotional way.
Warbly but positive, like seeing something so immensely emotional and beautiful that you yourself, a spectator of the reaction of warbliness in the song, become warbly as well
I love how you used bells in the background to help support things when you probably wouldn't have been able to use as many/the right sounding instruments to get the same vibe. It really does a lot to help carry the song. I also love how you handled the breakdown section.
I'm absolutely certain that if anyone heard this without context, they'd sooner believe this was a Super Robot Wars (SRW) boss theme or from Megaman Battle Network before even thinking this was a Pokemon track.

I was never a fan of the FRLG soundfont for how it was used in the game. Outside of intense or creepy themes, it could be misused easily in my opinion. This cover, however, made me appreciate the good sides of the soundfont more. It's one of the things that, to me, show this soundfont can sound really great! Edit: made a big spelling error 😅
I think the issue is that most folks don't know how to make proper use of the sound channels that render 8-bit sounds, let alone other hardware restrictions, so they often over-engineer it to sound inaccurate. This is most evident in the percussion here, which actually uses the noise channel for the (impression of) high-hats unless absolutely necessary not to - exactly how the actual GBA pokemon tracks would've done it. Not sure if the chords actually fit within the system's limits on polyphony, but if I found out it wasn't I'd still forgive that for all the little things it's doing right like using the other chiptune channels really well.

Desperate and emotional is the best way to describe it in my opinion. The FRLG sound font is definitely nostalgic too so it makes it more melancholy.
