    Question to vegans, why do you want to eat a product that imitates a meat product?

    • @alex6027
      @alex6027 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1328

      Here's my answer!
      I don't eat meat because it requires killing an animal to be made, plus it's not that great environmentally. However, I do like the taste. Plus, I'm autistic and tend to be limited in the kind of food I like/eat.
      So a familiar food that doesn't have the downsides of actual meat is nice. If you have any more questions, just ask

      It's not that we dislike meat, it's that we don't want animals to die in the process. At least for me, I'm happy to eat something similar without the suffering

      Well, people might be vegans because of ethical reasons, but still enjoy the taste/texture of meat, also some people can't eat meat for various other reasons, and might like a substitute. I'm not a vegan but I do enjoy some "meat substitutes"

    I find there is always one point that tends to be overlooked in reviews of products like this by non vegans. I have been entirely plant based for 7 years now. I can't remember what bacon tastes like and if I tried this I may or may not be impressed. However I am more likely to be impressed than someone who ate bacon in the week preceding their review. It is the same when those who drink alcohol review alcohol free spirits and conclude how crap they are compared to whisky rather than looking at why someone who doesn't drink alcohol may like the product. I really do appreciate your open mindedness with products like this and feel you give these products a fair shake whereas most people seem come at this with the intention of proving that x is not like its y equivalent rather than looking at why someone who does not consume y would get value from the product reviewed.

  • @xSwordLilyx
    @xSwordLilyx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Speaking of pea protein, apparently you can feed dogs vegan but it's not safe if there is pea protein or chickpea for some reason related to heart health. There's like one brand that sells that because that's a common substitute to use. I wouldn't expect you to be able to do that since they are carnivores, but if you think about we already kind of do it with kibble, substituting with a balance of what they need and stuff they do not naturally eat except for domestication.
    Obviously it would depend on the dog, they can have all sorts of allergies like people, and if you've ever had a pet or a finnicky pet or a pet getting on sometimes they won't even eat kibble but rather starve to death. Generally if you pay attention to them you can figure out if a diet is good for them or needs to change.
    I had a cat who I could not get to eat kibble except this one brand and when they discontinued it I had to feed her just wet food. Or sometimes mix kibble in. I didn't particularly like to do it but she was elderly and fit to starve herself. I did go for mostly fish.
    I think if I had a cat again I would look into what's nutritionally balanced and mostly just otherwise wasted bits and feed them that mixed with fish wet food mostly. I'm not vegan but it does kind of bother me to think of more animals going to feeding my cat than I need.
    At the moment the prospect is out the door as my boyfriend is allergic to cats and doesn't really like them.

    FYI they look underdone to me. I also eat them in a bun with ketchup, but may I recommend if you fancy trying this at home: you need a little more oil than in this video, and the pan is slightly too crowded for them to cook evenly, probably go with 4-5 strips in a pan at a time, this also helps you make sure you turn them at the right time and take them out when done before they burn. They will start to bubble and get caramelized when they're done and go crispy around the edges (more than in this video), and they have a rich sweet taste.

    To be fair I think £2 is around the price of a pack of decent bacon, so for a vegetarian, that’s acceptable.
    I’m vegan because of health reasons, and finding something like that will actually really help to add something else with that lovely smoky flavour.

      There's a brand called Vivera that does a plant-based kebab-style filling. It's very nice. This stuff he's reviewing doesn't taste like much, there are far better bacon-style vegan stuff out there.

    Over in the States, I've been trying "healthier" options. Found a new (to me) brand called Quorn. There is no corn in it, despite what the name conjures and it uses mycoprotein from fungi. I used their crumbly "mince" style. I made Quorn tacos and they were pretty good. Had a meaty taste very reminiscent of ground beef, but not quite, and the look was pretty spot on. All this to say that I think many food producers are getting better at satisfying non-vegans and expanding their palates. Keep doing what you do, love the eclecticism of the channel.

    Just a quick note on B12- it’s not produced by animals anyway! It actually tends to come from bacteria in the soil, most farmed animals are supplemented with it to provide the B12 in meat!

    You should have a look at the Seitan products made by Oumph. They do a 'smoky bits' bacon substitute and a planet based mock doner meat. Speaking as a meat eater with vegan friends, they're not too bad. The smoky bits crisp up nicely and the doner meat has a pretty good texture. You can get them in the freezer section in Morrisons.

    I really like how you fairly review vegan products. When it's been a while since you've eaten meat, your palate adjusts to the flavor of mock meat (which is why I crave it over real meat) so it's good to get another perspective. I think any exposure to meat alternatives is ultimately a good thing whether you're vegan, vegetarian, or just trying to eat less meat.
