Just used it for my first wedding shoot ever. Dumped footage yesterday, and so far... WOW... Its pretty damn good to my amateur eye and I am really enjoying editing the footage.
You take beautiful photos and your working knowledge of the Fuji system is very insightful! Thank you for those things :) As an EOS R user (that is interested in Fujifilm) it was disappointing to hear the majority of comparisons be for the X-T3 vs the X-T4. Especially due to the title of the video I would love to hear more about EOS R to X-T4 (or Fuji in general). As I said, you do high quality work; keep it up!
I can’t wait the video with your fuji settings for photography please🙏🏻😭 your style of shooting is so inspiring, but i can’t get those results switching from canon...will appreciate this video a lot!
Nice review! I just got my X-T4 coming from the Samsung NX1 (yes, I was one of the dozen or so who bought into the system). I know it isn't a new feature, but I really like the "analog" feeling of the Fuji. Already loving them dials. And my latest videos have also been recorded on the X-T4, I'm still learning but I'm loving that Eterna.
Hi Mitch, I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on the differences between the Canon EOS R and Fujifilm xt4 system as a hole. I Love the form factor of the xt4 but in the same time Canon has this simplicity feeling with their cameras as well as having a bigger sensor and I think EF/RF lens selection is way better.. my question is if I won't be disappointed going all the way with Fujifilm compared to Canon for events and outdoor photoshoots.. Thank you!
I think both have their place - it depends on the photographer. For me when it comes to photography - I just can't get away from the full frame look. If I shot more % video jobs though I would 100% go for the Fuji - even over the newer Canon cameras coming out. Fuji just absolutely kills the video game IMO.
Marián Čuprík 4k 60p would be great. I'd like a slightly bigger X-T200 body (with the SS, Exposure compensation dial etc). Yes definitely no IBIS, I'm sure Fuji's digital stabilisation will get better.
Love your lightroom presets! and thank you for the lightroom user tip. I didn't know why my fuji photos always looked oddly sharp on lightroom, but now I know.
You have the option to start AF tracking with your chosen AF point (or center point) on Canon R. You have to be in AI Servo and face + tracking mode. Then go to Menu -> AF -> Tab 5 -> "Initial Servo AF pt for face + tracking". Here the default setting is Auto. Change it to "Initial AF pt set for face + tracking". See page 300 of the user manual. Once enabled, see page 270 to see how to use it when shooting.
I recently got the X T4. The Sony A7R iv and Canon R6 AF and eye tracking is much better. But the X T4 isn't too bad either. Honestly no difference in image quality and sharpness. Slight slight edge for bokeh to the full frames. I like the SOOC and the colors from the Fuji much more. And the film simulations like Classic Negative, Chrome, Pro Negative and Eterna are unreal. I'm leaning going Fuji. This is from a Sony Shooter since the A7ii to the A7Riv. I also adpated Canon lenses with the Fringer adapter and images are every bit as good as anything out of the Sony or Canon full frames.
Max Fernandez haven’t tested the ibis yet, but auto focus works perfect for me, here’s a test I did a few days ago with the adapter and my 24mm 2.8 canon lens, excuse me being shirtless but wanted to show the results. th-cam.com/video/rsSgEWiz1BU/w-d-xo.html
Mitch, great review. You say you prefer the EOS R for the full frame look vs the Fuji for portraits. Curious if you tried the 56mm f/1.2 and if the forthcoming 50mm f/1.0 would make you reconsider
I owned the 56 1.2 for two years. And I also owned the Mitakon 35mm 0.95. Yeah these lenses have shallow DOF akin to FF offerings. But what about a 24mm 1.4 equivalent on the fuji? Or a 35mm 1.4 (my personal favourite).
@@MitchLally Ironically, I've been shooting a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 in Canon mount on my X-T3 with a Fringer. Don't get the same shallow DoF but you do get better AF and sharper image than the older Fuji 35/24mms. I do see your point, however. If you want wide and fast, you really need a 23mm f/1.0 to pair with the 56. The Sigma 85 and 135 are killer on the Fuji too btw. You should give them a shot. But my favorite is probably the Canon 135mm f/2 on the Fuji. The combination of the dreamy almost vintage qualities from the glass paired with some of the film simluations in the Fuji makes for an incredible look.
Great review, Mitch. Looking forward to your XT-4 content. Can you take some action shots, or videos with a lot of movement? I want to see how bad the AF tracking gets. Looking forward to your future videos!
Dude 12 batteries... That's nuts. I have two xt3 and own 4 batteries. I start a wedding with charged batteries. One battery gets me through the start of the day until ceremony where I switch just before. Then put the first batter on a charger. The second battery gets me through ceremony couple shots and first dances then I switch back to the first one that was on the charger and it gets me through the rest of the night
Oh yeah, I had two XT3's and an XH1 - shooting video as well in 4K not stills... I didn't have all genuine fuji batteries either so maybe that's why they would drain quicker. I think I only used 8-10 per day on average so I always had spares just in case. That way I never had to bring a charger to a wedding.
I like how you said that the burst shooting has been improved to 15 fps on the X-T4, where as the X-T3 "only" offered 11 fps. I mean for me, the already fast burst shooting on the X-T3 just got faster on the X-T4.
Interesting that you say at around 5:00 that the f/2 lenses are better in image quality. My experience, at least with the 23mm ones, has been the opposite: the 1.4 lens is far better than the f/2 in almost every image-quality-related aspect, and it's only the autofocus (and cost in terms of size, weight and money) that is not as good. From what I've seen with, e.g. KentuckyMan30 ’s tests, the same applies to the others (16, 35 and 50/56).
Thank you for explaining why Lightroom can't sharpen the images effectively, I have been using capture one mostly to edit my Fuji raws but I have recently moved back to adobe as I needed to bundle with premiere. Now I can do all my sharpening work for professional work on Photoshop and just use LR for the fun stuff.
Thank you for the great Fuji review content. I really appreciate your style. I have the X-T3 with a bunch of Fuji glass and I’ve been stuck shooting eterna profile 400 DR with a VND. I have failed to understand how to either expose well or grade Log or HLG footage. I’ve been doing some kitchen cooking videos and I’m trying to understand the best approach to exposure because every time I bring F Log or HLG into FCPX I just can’t get it to look acceptable but it looks alright with eterna. Any tips on how I should have the histogram look while shooting HLG 🤷🏻♂️
I’m just trying to make the most of the X-T3 and vacation vids trying to get the most dynamic range and best looking color. Are you setting up zebras and just making sure not to clip anything or your making sure to let stuff clip as long as your subject is exposed properly?
If you go back and watch my video on how I colour grade my videos I have some info on this. When it comes to shooting indoors I would advise not to shoot in log or hlg. It doesn’t offer any advantage to image quality as you have complete control over lighting and dynamic range. Shoot as close to your desired final result as possible to save the headache of colour grading.
I do let bright parts of the image clip if they are not important (ie I would never clip skin tones or my subjects clothing etc.) always protect your highlights but in the case that you subject is too dark when protecting highlights I would rather sacrifice the highlights in the background. Of course this is a last resort - if you can take control of your lighting, use a reflector to bounce light to your subject or shoot from a different angle or different time of day. Filmmaking is problem solving - if you solve these lighting and dynamic range issues yourself you will have a much easier time than if you expect your camera to do all the work.
Nice work Mitch - love the skin tones of the shots with model in the woods - they are absolutely fantastic. IBIS aside, for purely image quality, would you say the X-T3 is identical? This will be B/C cam for me on a tripod or gimbal. Thanks for HLG tip.
Mitch, a helpful review for me, maybe in part because i too am a Canon user now debating which direction to go in, for upgrading. Have owned some of the older Fuji models. Their jpeg color profiles are really seductive.
The best review by far comparing this two jewels. One question Mitch : I have a Xt3 with 16-55 and 35 1.4 ,a x100v and Canon RP with RF 50 1.8. It’s just a hobby the photography. I am considering to sell some of them and to remain with one gear. What’s your opinion please …. Thanks
thanks for your in depth review. I'm currently own an X-T2 and want to upgrade. Some people say, the X-T4 AF tracking performance + 100-400 isn't good enough for fast wildlife. Is this true? There are many mixed review about this. I'm a bit afraid to be a bit disappointed at this area after an upgrade
Thank you very much for this video! I'm torn between purchasing one of these cameras. I'm coming from an ageing Rebel T5i(700D) and want to step up the game. I do photography as a hobby, mainly landscapes and travel. I don't really do any video. Part of me wants to try something new out and the X-T4 looks like it's more compact and travel friendly, but the other part methinks the new RF lenses for the Canon would be a better investment, plus I'm already very familiar with it. Thoughts?
Well done brotha. I really like the charging all 3 batteries via USB c. Perfect for adding a battery pack to a rig to charge up on wedding days. I’m just holding out to see if they make an xh2. Fingers crossed!
@@AtomicPixel Sick, i'm in the UK so i'll go kill a badger or something (Not really i'm not a horrible person before i get a shed load of hate!!!!) ...phew.
Nice vid. Please explain when did shallow depth of field become “greater depth of field”? Curious as most photo content on YT says this and for the life of me I cannot figure it out. Everyone says they enjoy the greater DOF of a FFS but a FFS yields (generally as more complicated) a more shallow DOF over say APSC and smaller given same equivalent focal length, f stop, and camera to subject distance. If ya think about it, change depth with focus so greater depth of focus front and back of critical plane f11 vs shallow depth of focus front and back of CP say at f1.4 Or did I miss something in under grad and gradual school. Again love the vid and the stills and production solid. Maybe the inverse square law changed and I didn’t get the memo.
Bush Beatnik you’re right. I said ‘extra dof’ I did actually mean, extra shallow depth of field though - should probably word it better next time to avoid confusion.
@@MitchLally not trying to be that dork troll dude but was just curious and figured, obviously, what you were saying. new sub and love the channel. i am amazed at how production is on your and other's channels. i am an old film guy and i hope you up and coming "influencer" types know how good you have it on the gear side! i know it is not easy but you sure as heck make it look that way. like a plate of visual buttdah! keep them coming!
Hi Mitch, I am currently looking to upgrade to this XT4, but I would appreciate if you can check the link for RAW file again. I want to have a closer look at the raw file, but I cannot access to the link above. ❤❤
So tempted to swap my X-T3’s in for 4’s. The one thing i struggle with as a wedding photographer is Af-C. I like the sound pf that tracking focus you said. I’m guessing you use bbf. Great review dude. I’ve been thinking for ages wether or not to go back to a FF Canon. You nay have persuaded me to stay with Fuji a little longer.
Hey Mitch, great video. Have you used the Fuji X-H1? What are your thoughts on that camera? The current local store in my country is running a promo (with the battery handle) and the price is slightly less than the X-T4 (both without the lens). Just wondering which one you'd recommend for someone who is amateur, but looking to find a camera for urban/street type of photo/video shooting. Any thoughts and comments will be highly appreciated. Thanks.
Mitch give your advice pls... i am breaking my head between Canon EOS R \ Fuji x-t4 \ Canon R6 What do you think? For Photo and Video, mostly - studio cloth shoots for marketplaces \ content campaigns for brands video\photo \ vloging (talking head like yours) Thank you in advance.
Hi Mitch! Many thanks for such a great video! I was especially intrigued since you mention that you're coming from an EOS R. I'm currently planning on a new photo-kit and trying to decide between the xt4 and the R6. At the moment I'm mostly shooting privately (travel). Any inputs are highly appreciated!
Why do I see a distortion in ALL X-T4 videos? For example 7:52. Vertical lines go inside at the top. Do Fuji's lenses suck when it comes to perspective?
I switched from Fujifilm XT3/XH1 to Canon R and now R5 and can't imagine going back to Fujifilm until they update their fast primes with Mark II versions. At this point, the old glass is holding them back. I thought about getting an X100V after selling my X100F as a fun daily camera but I chose the Leica Q2 instead. I love Fujifilm after shooting with their products for 5 years. I just can't find a place for them in my kit anymore. Definitely miss the Fuji Magic though. It's a real thing how their cameras makes you feel while shooting with them.
Interesting video because i have a complete Fuji wedding setup and i am thinking about getting an EOS R additionally to get sometimes this blurry full frame look ;-)
I've been using a Nikon D5100 for 11 years and am in desperate need of an upgrade...was wanting to switch to full frame, though. Is there much of a difference between this apsc one and full frame? I would be using this for social media mostly - youtube travel videos and photography - but hoping to go more professional and do stuff for brands etc over time once I gain more of an audience. Not sure if I should go for full frame now or wait till that happens lol... (as who knows, I may never gain that audience, it's so hard these days ol)
You dont really need the full frame for professional. I really like apsc more for sports, wildlife and for the portability! I have both xt4 and Sony IV, my Sony is on sale atm. The Sony is great, but the feeling of using it got me much more uninspired, and I prefer the apsc. I got the xt4 even while xt5 was released, cause of the better in low lighting and feeling after renting it
Yeah sorry, I’ve owned both and multiple copies of the 23mm 1.4 too. The 1.4 is not sharp at all even in the centre wide open whereas the f2 is. To get a similar sharpness with the f1.4 you need to stop down to f2 which kind of defeats the purpose of getting an f1.4 anyway. Also the 1.4 has lower contrast and saturation and a lot more chromatic aberration in my tests. But the 23 f2 does have a sharpness issue at close focus I will admit.
I'm hesitating between Canon EOS R and Fuji X-T4 for my main TH-cam Camera and every day photo. MKBHD, Matti, PetterMckinnon are using and recomanding the ESO R but I really like the fuji. Any advise?
@@MitchLally Thanks for answering this fast! I'm gonna go with my gut and take the X-T4 then if none can be a bad choice. Keep doing what you're doing I love it!
Just moved from the GH5 to Eos RP bc none of the Fuji lenses made sense to me from a video perspective. Missing the 120fps and small form factor but loving the AF and beautiful images!
I’m thinking about getting an xt4 over an R5, completely different I know. But every time I see photos from the xt4 they just don’t see super razor sharp. How do you think the RAW files compare between the R and the xt4 as far as sharpness and detail goes?
I've noticed this too! and it's one of the hesitations on why I'm not sure if I should get it. That and the fact its apsc...I see your comment is a year old. Curious what you ended up getting lol
@@rachel.isabelle I went with the R6 in the end. Have been very happy with my decision 👌 excellent photo quality, 20MP suits my style of shooting but if I tended to crop much I might start to notice the 20MP lacking a bit. The modern auto focus and flip screen are a great upgrade from my 5Dmkii but the familiar yet infinitely customisable controls feel like home. And the 4k 60fps video quality is some of the best out there, it’s downsampled from 5.7k I believe.

Thoughts?
Hey mitch, could you let us all know which courses you took to learn website making and designing??
Well done brotha. I really like the charging all 3 batteries via USB c. Perfect for adding a battery pack to a rig to charge up on wedding days.
I’m just holding out to see if they make an xh2. Fingers crossed!
Re X-H2 me too, would be the ultimate!
Tom Crookes let us pray... haha
@@AtomicPixel "Our Father who arte in Fuji, blessed be the X-H2..."
Tom Crookes loooooool. I’ll also pray to Odin and sacrifice a possum or something for us.
@@AtomicPixel Sick, i'm in the UK so i'll go kill a badger or something (Not really i'm not a horrible person before i get a shed load of hate!!!!) ...phew.
Stoked to watch this one mate!
Bb focus is the way my friend!!
Fab review! Very helpful! Thanks!
Great video! I hope they add that wide tracking auto focus in the video mode. Seems like that should be a simple thing to do via firmware?
Hope so!
Great stuff, Mitch. Mind sharing the settings for the video of your subject in the woods?
Great video, great review! Really enjoyed it
Thanks Leonardo!
Solid entry coming in from fuji
I recommend just running the RAF raw files through Iridient X-Transformer. The difference is nice and day.
Thanks.
What do you mean you are not getting good results with the 23mm f1.4? That’s one of my favourite lenses!
Autofocus is a bit clunky. It's a beautiful lens but IMO fuji has better ones out.
Mitch give your advice pls... i am breaking my head between Canon EOS R \ Fuji x-t4 \ Canon R6
What do you think? For Photo and Video, mostly - studio cloth shoots for marketplaces \ content campaigns for brands video\photo \ vloging (talking head like yours)
Thank you in advance.
What’s your blogging lens and camera here? Love the quality, color and brightness of your speaking frame.
I used the Canon EOS R and my Tamron 17-35mm f2.8-4.
Mitch Lally Thank you!(:
I switched from Fujifilm XT3/XH1 to Canon R and now R5 and can't imagine going back to Fujifilm until they update their fast primes with Mark II versions. At this point, the old glass is holding them back. I thought about getting an X100V after selling my X100F as a fun daily camera but I chose the Leica Q2 instead. I love Fujifilm after shooting with their products for 5 years. I just can't find a place for them in my kit anymore. Definitely miss the Fuji Magic though. It's a real thing how their cameras makes you feel while shooting with them.
Chazyfizzlez true lenses are the worst of any system.
@@polanialmoni6274 Umm no.
@@polanialmoni6274 Thats bullshit. Fuji has a lot of amazing glass, some of their old lenses even have a cult status (like xf35/1.4)
What lens did you use in your XT3 sample image shown?
lots of different ones - mitakon 35 0.95 and 16-55 2.8 were my main lenses
I got the xt4 even while xt5 was released, cause of the better in low lighting and feeling after renting it
Hi 🙋♀️ I’m wondering if the footage of 3:02 shot on lens 23 f1.4? Thanks in advance
Yep!
G'day mate. You think the image quality from the 23f2 is better than the 1.4? Wow. Anyway, mate. Keep up the good work.
Any advise?
My advice would be to focus less on the camera and more on the content - both are good cameras so just pick the one you like shooting with best
@@MitchLally Thanks for answering this fast! I'm gonna go with my gut and take the X-T4 then if none can be a bad choice.
Keep doing what you're doing I love it!
Thanks for this vid! Greetz from Belgium :)
Great presentation. Very well explained. Thank you.
Just moved from the GH5 to Eos RP bc none of the Fuji lenses made sense to me from a video perspective. Missing the 120fps and small form factor but loving the AF and beautiful images!
How do you compare fhd quality from RP to GH5? I’m not realy satisfy with quality from my RP but I don’t have anything to compare
@@TheGilotyn what's in your definition of quality? Or like, what's not up to par with the rp quality?
Do you think this camera is better than a 5D Mark III for stills?
Absolutely!
Looks like a great camera
Which would you choose between Fujifilm XT-4, Sony A7 III and Nikon Z6 and why?
edit: nice and informative review 👍
Was this shot using one of your presets from authentic film ? If so which ? really loved how crispy those images looked
Yes! Most of the photos edited using the ‘00’ preset. Some older photos using 03,04,08. They are all slight variations of the same style.
Would u happen to have a new Lightroom preset coming out? :3
Yes, very soon. Not sure it will be everyone's cup of tea though :P
Which is better for photography, xt4 or Eos R? I am weddings and events photographer...
Is it your main camera now?
Man those forest portraits, surprised she’s lit so well being back lit and all. Gorgeous though
Great video man!
is the pictures you previewed for the X-T3 straight out of camera or edited? and what picture profiled u used in x-t3 ?
All the XT3 photos I showed are edited raws. I used the Provia profile but I shot in RAW so the profile doesn't matter.
When this camera becomes 999$ i should get it. Thnx >>.
2022
I admire your patience friend :)
@Will Mutt Haha, right!
I currently have the X-T2, do you think its a worth upgrading to the X-T4? (I rarely do video)
Dear Mitch, what lense did you use for scene at 2:27 ? Thanks !
Pretty sure that's the 23mm 1.4
Awesome video! And you're very handsome!
I jumped out from Canon to the X-T4 too pair months ago
Great review!
Thanks Jessica!
@@PPYTAO hhmmm...interesting! glad you're happy with your purchase and thanks for replying haha ;)
Love the image at 1:20 I'm always nervous to bring my camera out skiing
I'm convinced!
Heard, Fuji is working on a focus, allows to follow the belly button and thigh 🤕
(For shorter cloth and also nackige, too)
Thanks Mitch! Great video. Would love to see if there is really that much difference to the Eos r when I comes to sharpness and bokeh!
I am a XT3 Wedding Photographer, but I keep thinking about swichting to Canon. I hope you can help me to not do it!
Further I would love to see your workflow on sharpening your images from the Fujifilm.
Greetings from Germany,
Flo
Florian Rieder move to canon it’s way better.
@@polanialmoni6274 Yeah, NOT!
For best AF! I found You need to be in boost mode! I noticed u had it in economy half way through this clip.
Elias Pap I did have it in economy for a while. I noticed a tiny difference between economy and boost with the AF. Nothing drastic. Boost definitely doesn’t turn it into DPAF level focusing though.
Better than a7iii? Debating between them
Does shifting to apsc from full frame bring any struggles ??
Minor struggles ie depth of field / bokeh, doing math when using lenses, not as good high ISO performance...
how do you like 35mm f2. for video??'
Thank you for the raw = D
Which one would you recommend me canon r or xt4
You look like Kenny Powers so EOS R for you.
Can sameone tell me if these portraits looks bit too pink ?
I might wanna buy a fuji again after watching this haha
The flip out screen should have been a feature in earlier models.
