This was sublimely well done and shared generously. James could play this in so many ways, and in this rendition he chose to reach within for something more filled with own feeling as only an author knows, and polished his so well cherished gem by so many with special emotions invoked and freshly hashed in the moment, very intimately he realized and noted in his brief intro the place deserved his best (which usually are, no mater where he is playing, always at 100%) and he was very generous to not just play it in any pro manner with tech and method, this was more into. This was a gift delivery, if I was in the audience I will cherish for Life. Like I still do from seeing Peter Gabriel walk into the restaurant we were eating and on request from the owner seemly friends, and very pleased fellow patrons regaled us with 2 songs not just sang a capella, but he added sentiment to transformed while he was singing his 2 masterpieces like none. One of those rare and true to the soul renditions with full surrender from audience and artists connected as one
I'm so glad he never got really big. The shins are a diamond in the rough. The type of band you want to bury their cds in the sand on a beach and have a young kid stumble across them and change their life hopefully
I was complimenting your comment, while slighting the people that do make comments like the ones in *quotation* marks in mine. Sorry if that was lost on you.
I'm not even sure I understand the lyrics, but they are pretty deep! And why does gangham style have 1 billion views and this less than 100k? It's really not right.

Gangham style is just substance-less garbage that all the dummies consume while crying about how "there is no good music out today." They fail to listen to people like The Shins, Alexi Murdoch, and other good musicians like Elliott Smith since they are dunderheads. The real atrocity is how a lot of Nick Drake songs uploaded back in 2006 have less than a million views.
Talented guy, great musician....but I ask you what the hell were you thinking breaking up with the shins...are you mad? this song just seems odd and incomplete without the original band members. sure u had your personal issues so what...u put that aside with the guys for the sake of great music. now since the new album, the shins suck....mercer i don't know what u were thinking but big mistake breaking up the shins.
james has probably sang this song a millon times, and he makes it sound like this could be the first time! love ya james
he's got such a control of his voice!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely brilliant song and brilliant performance!
Still one of the best songs ever written... Awesome!
so beautiful... almost made me cry..
Flawless performance. Alone with voice and acoustic guitar in a quiet room... there is no margin for error.
Great song, great live quality, great singer!!! Go JAMES MERCER!!!
The king of songwriters
the control he has over his voice is insane. no doubt one of the best singers ever!
I don’t know if any person with any instrument has ever sounded better than that. He is absolutely incredible
I could really listen to this guy sing on a continuous loop, beautiful!! Great song, love The Shins, cheers for the post.

WOW, Thanks Kink!
Amazing.
Very simple tune and unexplainable lyrics. Perfect hipster tune. I love it.
James you are up there with my favs...Robert Smith and Morrissey.
Patiently waiting for a next Broken Bells album.
Manny Vazquez Good Luck

Just perfection.
Awesome song, very talented.
You brilliant man.

So wonderful!! also, some part of the song reminds me of Belle and Sebastian.
I want to marry his voice
All of these videos are amazing! and under-appreciated apparently! spread the word
I wish I was James Mercer
I didn’t want that to end. Chills.
I see/pray/hope see awesome things coming in James Mercer's gerneral direction.
Oh, my. Exquisite. -3
man that melody at 3:33, he should make that into a full blown song, just that melody for the chorus
You mean the part of the guitar solo....
@@michaelanderson3426 no the voice over the guitar
Most talented musician alive imo
Bing is my new favorite search engine.

Goddamn, this is awesome.
that's a very clean bass line
Magical
If this song was only 20 secs long, with just that humming bit - it'd still be brilliant
Neat room!
his voice has grown so much
...But my head's to the wall and I'm lonely... Good GOD. That makes my body radiate with emotion!
Wow!!!!
My taste in music just got upgraded. I must restart my brain and install updates.
nice
I swear I was writing that till I saw two comments below you wrote the exact same thing!
Hear that voice see that face That's the man who's experienced heartache
like a gull takes to the wind...
Ben Gibbard and James Mercer are my favorite artists. they should make a record together.
I was hoping he'd do that for the solo :)
love you kevin spacey!!!!!
Does anybody know which pickup microfones they are using there?
I was complimenting your comment, while slighting the people that do make comments like the ones in *quotation* marks in mine. Sorry if that was lost on you.
we'be just covered this great song, give it a listen?
I'm not even sure I understand the lyrics, but they are pretty deep! And why does gangham style have 1 billion views and this less than 100k? It's really not right.
That is one hell of a ratio. So many feels. Only one person so far has never been in love.
It's wheezywaiter!

BROKEN BELLS" HOLDING ON FOR LIFE"( SINGER JAMES MERCER OF THE SHINS) RESULT ( AMAZINGNESS)
And also, I didn't say "hilarious", so I don't know who you're quoting.
That J-45 sounds awesome 😎
Fucking sensational
Kevin Spacey + Hugh Jackman = James Mercer
Nah man, that's vsauce.
No dislikes? Shhhh... the trolls are sleeping
Zero dislikes? Damn straight.
I went to go and play this song on my guitar after listening to it.... but I had to clean all the gunk off my pants first
i hate it when there is dirt in my fries.
Got 99 likes and the dislikes got none
vsauce IS wheezeywaiter IS James Mercer
It looks like its pretty hard to hit those hight notes lol
NOVIAURAH Not for him
He chooses to exhale into the note rather than sing it in one roll. Easier to do.
3:33 - 3:40
Wish he'd have done a little Walken before he left.
@aimtcb Dawn
Could it be?! A funny comment?! One that isn't: "HAHA NICE JOB KEVIN SPACEY! YOU KNOW THAT GUY FROM AMERICAN BEAUTY?! YEAH HE LOOKS LIKE HIM! HAHA!"
young Frank Underwood

you fail your own fail. you are wrong

Lol fail, it wasn't Natalie Portman's character that said it, it was Zach Braff's.
It actually was Natalie's line.
Because there's a stupid dance associated to it. No talent required.
