Thanks for taking the time to do this, Matt. The difference was not as profound as I would have expected. Finger-picked, the browns were a little more articulate, while the Aquilas seemed to have more low-mid presence. It sounded like the browns were superior on the strumming - with a little more shimmer and sustain.

Thanks Matt. It is quite possible that your own playing style will deliver more of a difference. I have had a busy week this week and have sanded off or cracked all my fingernails while lowering actions, so I am playing with the pads on my fingertips. When I did occasionally meet the strings with whatever nails I had left, I could hear the Worths burst forward more with some more clarity, but I was, quite literally, hanging on by my fingertips!

@@WorldofUkes Matt, that is a cruel irony that being the proprietor of a ukulele shop makes it more difficult for you to play the ukulele. If it's any consolation, your playing without fingernails still sounds better than mine does with my nails fully intact. 🙂

I think the difference is hard to hear on TH-cam. My personal experience is the Aquilas made every one of my ukes, including the solid Koas, sound cheap, plasticky and plunky. The Worth Browns make such a richer sound, with more resonation and sustain. They are also thinner and easier to play.
So why do so many ukes come with Aquilas? My theory is they are thicker, therefore they hide fret imperfections and other possible shortcomings. I have also tried Worth Clears, and they are good, but there is something magical about the Worth Browns. I will eventually put them on all my Ukes. BTW: If you think the Worths are expensive, note that the string length is enough to string TWO ukes! Just cut perfectly in the middle, and take a bit more time stringing, because the length is juuust enough for the middle two strings, but still works out fine.

I always think that Aquila make ukes sound like Aquila. On a super cheap uke this isn't a bad thing. But on something more expensive, you can miss (I feel) the nuances that make it expensive in the first place.

@@WorldofUkes Exactly! The Aquilas are OK on cheap ukes, but wow, those Browns resonate on my solid wood ukes like crazy! The E string will ring forever on my solid koa!

I just discovered this wonderful video. Thank you so much for the comparison. To me the Worth browns emit a lovely chime, similar to tapping crystal stemware.
Another person requested comparing them to Aquila Reds, which I think is a great suggestion. FYI I have not had a breakage problem with them in the past few years. I don't know if they are now made differently, or if because I now install them more carefully. When winding the tuning pegs, I keep strings on top of the nut instead of sliding them through the grooves. In any case, your videos are most appreciated.

Strings are always subjective, in this case got to agree with the new owners choice. To also be fair, thought the uke sounded nicer than I expected and classic looks to match. Thanks for sharing. Have a great week.

Yes, I know what you mean. It's quite simply made, but does sound good.

Thanks Matt. I always prefer fluorocarbon strings. I have a solid mahogany gloss Cynthia Lin performance concert from Ohana - I changed to the Uke Logic soft pink fluorocarbon strings (high g) and it sounds WAY better! (IMHO, of course!) than the Worth Browns that it comes with. 🙂

Think the Worth Browns might just have the edge for my ears!

To my ear, the sound of the Aquilas always seems more muffled than with the Worth Browns. More articulation with Worth strings. Thank you very much for this interesting comparison.

Hello, Hope you don't mind but I have downloaded this video to play back on my Big Amp, but so far, with my bookshelf speakers connected to the small amp for my computor, worths are ahead.

One day. Though I don't generally use reds, maybe a throwback to a decade ago when they were always breaking.

@@judynpeterjones3307 it is the same uke in all cases - I am a bit heavy handed on account of having sanded off my fingernails my mistake. But think it's more likely to be bad playing!
