    It’s funny how cedar is often referred to as the warmer top wood when compared to cedar on the prominent ukulele sites/TH-cam. I’ve always felt that cedar has greater clarity, better articulation than spruce. Spruce is said to be able to give greater volume. I suppose that’s why most classical guitars are cedar topped and flamenco guitars have spruce tops. If you do more gentle finger picking the Cedar bird has the edge on clarity to my ears. If you do more strumming, I think the Moon bird has a more rounded tone. A very interesting video because there’s only one variable/difference between the two ukes. That’s why it’s such a good comparison.

    • @WorldofUkes
      @WorldofUkes 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I always like cedar tops, so naturally I would assume I would prefer the cedar here. But there's just something about the unexpected bass response of the Moon Bird that gets me. But I would normally say, 'cedar is like spruce with the edges rounded off', which probably makes no sense! With these I feel like the Moon Bird's balance is achieved by strong treble and strong bass tones. The Cedar Bird is more even across the strings, without those extremes. Which perhaps suits picking better. I made this video in part as a customer couldn't decide between the two. Interestingly, they went for the cedar one.

    Love the sound of this uke! Up to mid-2020, the Flight Voyager was made with the the passive piezo pickup. They changed mid-year to an active pickup with controls placed underneath the sound hole (internal vs external placement) so no holes needed on the shoulder of the instrument for the controls. The model number changed to EQ-A (A is for active pickup.) You may still find the passive piezo pickup in older stock in store/dealer inventories or in a used uke so be sure to ask for the pickup of your choice before you buy.

  • @asnormal1362
    @asnormal1362 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I agree that not one string type is necessarily 'better'; they are just different. There are different uses for the variety of available strings. The Flight Voyager EQ-A is a good value for a tenor uke with its updated features and you'd have to work hard to make it not sound good : ). Note the A in the model EQ-A stands for active pickup. The internal active pickup (with controls under the sound hole) was a new feature starting mid-2020 so you may still find the passive piezo pickup in older stock in store/dealer inventories. Be sure to ask before you purchase so you buy the model with the pickup style you prefer.

    • @WorldofUkes
      @WorldofUkes หลายเดือนก่อน

      It isn't a different tuning, it is still GCEA. It's just that each note is an octave lower than usual. So your G will still be a G, just a deeper, lower G than normal. So if you played a C chord using these, and someone with a regular uke played their C chord, they'd still chime together, just yours would be like a bigger, deeper, lower version.

    The experience of having one in one's own hands, the haptic touch and feel, the details of the form, the ease of playability, the whole multisensory experience ... seems to me more important than the sound alone. The sound: When I play in my bedroom or in the kitchen or the livingroom or the balkony or sitting under a tree ... these circumstances influence the sound much more than what I can detect as differences in your sound samples. The instrument as a whole is "my pride and joy". Becoming a better player, depends on having an instrument which I love to grab and play on. As I get better, the saying "the sound is in the fingers" will show its truth. I love to go to specialized instrument shops just to adore the beauty and perfections of those instruments on display. (Even instruments which I do not play and do not intend to learn.) Many I cannot afford. And the ones which I can afford and are suitable for my developping level of playing: I already have what I need. Some day I will fall in love with a new instrument. I will know it, if I have it in my hands and can admire it with all my senses close-up: it will feel (and sound) irresistible!
