Society accepts 10,000 deaths per year that all could be prevented if we put breathalyzers on ALL vehicles. We put break lights on all vehicles but not devices that are more life saving like breathalyzers. If people would accept being slightly inconvenienced when they start their car it would save thousands of lives each year.

99% of the time drunk people survive because they are much more loose and not stiff as a sober person would be. So when they get into collisions they almost bounce like jelly and don't really "feel" the impact. But I can agree it's not fair. The real tragedy is that not one single person will change their mind about drinking and driving after hearing about this tragic accident and the resulting 30 year sentence. 1.5 BAC 3 hours after the crash means she was roughly 2.0 at the time of the crash. Once you get up into that level, you might find yourself going 100mph in the wrong direction on the freeway. A lot of times these DUI sentences seem way overboard or way too lenient. I was thinking, all things considered, 20-30 years seemed appropriate; so I would say this was a fair sentence.
What makes this story bad is that she didn’t learn her lesson the first time when her license was suspended for five years. She gets the license back and less than a month this happens!! I knew this the whole family. I was the nurse who took care of the grandmother. All I can say is this family was a UNITED family. The sister that passed, in the accident, had just showed me a picture of the dresses she was considering to wear for her 21st B-DAY Bash. She was a dental assistant student. She had all the life ahead. All of the family that was killed, were always looking out for each other. The surviving sister was the one I met first at the clinic. Very beautiful girl and soul. I could only imagine how lost she feels. I'm sorry for the loss of the Mejias.

A lot of times these DUI sentences seem way overboard or way too lenient. I was thinking, all things considered, 20-30 years seemed appropriate; so I would say this was a fair sentence.
What makes this story bad is that she didn’t learn her lesson the first time when her license was suspended for five years. She gets the license back and less than a month this happens!! Being drunk at 16 years old says a lot your a baby at 16, so basically, her behavior as a teen followed her into her adult life, and apparently she never received guidance following the first incident. I knew this the whole family. I was the nurse who took care of the grandmother. All I can say is this family was a UNITED family. The sister that passed, in the accident, had just showed me a picture of the dresses she was considering to wear for her 21st B-DAY Bash. She was a dental assistant student. She had all the life ahead. All of the family that was killed, were always looking out for each other. The surviving sister was the one I met first at the clinic. Very beautiful girl and soul. I could only imagine how lost she feels. I'm sorry for the loss of the Mejias.

Its because they're drunk which makes them react slower so their body doesn't tense up which causes less damage most of the time. They do actually survive more due to this
