- This film features a beautifully captured flight by the 50" Farman F.60 Goliath, a rubber-powered free-flight model at the 2024 Flying Aces Nats in Geneseo, NY, built and designed by Vance Gilbert. The flights of a model with zero dihedral were more successful than expected! The approach was inspired by the late, great Bill Hannan and his Boxy Bipe stick model. Film & photos by Tom Hallman, Karin Escalante, Jason McGuire, and George & Jonathan Nunez. Music: "Now I See" by We Dream of Eden via Artist.io.

Special thanks to those who contributed their photos and films to this presentation, namely Karin Escalante, Jason McGuire, and George & Jonathan Nunez. They made this film happen. I was mostly an editor, but loved every minute. And oh...Vance had something to do with it too. :-D
A superb little film....every one of your videos has at least one moment contained within it that really moves me....and makes me realise what a wonderful species we are. Fly, indeed...
That plane is outright beautiful!
Free flight is the pinnacle of model aviation!
Its a cliche that when Vance shows up, another stunning airplane comes out of the box. Magnificent and kudo's to the absolutely beautiful pictures and video.
That is just about the most impressive bunch of sticks I ever saw fly! Thanks !!
Good ole rubber band free flight! Brings back great memories! Just beautiful craftsmanship in that model. Glad it made the turn! Cheers!
Thanks Tom, and all the others that contributed to this video! Absolutely AMAZING! Kudos to Vance for that beautiful plane! And BOY does it fly! Excited to see this one!
Really beautiful colour scheme 😊
what magnificent way to start the day - GLORIOUS!!
Many many thanks!
Way to go Vance!! I know GBA JR is watching from above with awe, joy and laughter on your accomplishments.
Beautiful Farman ❤
Magic! Thanks for sharing!
Well, that was just wonderful!
Fabulous and unique free flight model build and a great flyer too! Thanks for sharing.
Absolute amazing model and flight Vance! Beautiful to watch. 😊
OMG! That was just flipping amazing!
I remember in one of Walt Mooney's articles, he was trimming a CO2 seaplane peanut having all kinds of trouble. He then used some of the clear plastic wrapping from a cigarette pack applied to the struts, then the model flew beautifully.
This is the day of the big boxy bipe! Another brilliant build /design by Mr Gilbert.. I guess that when the horizontal surfaces have THIS much contiguity, the tiniest bit of wingwash is going to have a profound effect. This baby is in that just right groove here.
Really wonderful film, a credit to your remarkable club!
Nice one gentlemen. 🌟👍
Yep, nothing that hasn't already been said, highest mark all around...great close ups of the plane in flight !!!!!!! Love those !
Absolutely gorgeous model. The designer/builder is super talented. Nice work!
Oh man, SO glad this was captured so beautifully. It was amazing to see in person, and now I can share what we saw. Incredible.
I haven't built a free-flight model since about 1980, and yet you and Vance and a cadre of Flying Aces folks provide enough of a beautiful, vicarious thrill that it (almost) makes up for it. I'm in San Diego, and unfortunately Brown's Field is gone, but if I ever make it out your way, I hope I can meet you guys someday. Thanks for all you do and the beauty you create and share❤👍.
Bellissimi questi vecchi aerei, hanno un fascino ineguagliabile, unico. Il modello è molto bello e vola bene. Complimenti ❤
Wow your free flight is very beautiful 🎉🎉 Thanks for sharing❤❤
Thanks, Tom...!!!
Beautiful model ...nice flight...greatly shot video...thanks for sharing.
Thank you for building and showing on flight this F.60. The first airliner put in "regular" service! Paris-London in 1919...
She was one of the biggest airplanes of 1919, made out of a bomber project.
Model aviation at its finest! Congratulations on a great model. (Hard to type with tears in your eyes 😅). Magnificent!
Thanks again Tom, for another beautifully relaxing flight experience!
These larger multi-engine aircraft are incredible to look at flying.
Simply amazing!
Beautiful! That freeze picture at around 3:37 would make a great poster or wall art picture. The planes colors with the sky and clouds in that freeze- it's hard to tell it's not full scale.
sooooo beautifull
Art indeed!
BRILLIANT MODEL AND FANTASTIC FLIGHT!!!🤗
I JUST LOVE THE COLOR LIVERY!
THE FLIGHT PATTERN IS VERY STEADY...
GREAT WORK, GREAT VIDEO!!!😉👍
BRAVO!!!👏
THX FOR SHARING!!!😊😎
Beauty! And I can't believe how many poles she missed...!!!
Outstanding !
You will NEVER forget this flight. How thrilling.
That was amazing on so many levels!
Beautiful...
yes!
Beautiful, delightful, wonderful.
The art of model flying perfection.........👍
Beautiful !
Pucker factor:9! I couldn't tell if you were surprised or thrilled, or a combination of both.
Beautiful model. I'm scratching my head as to how those infilled struts produce a dihedral like effect, but however it works it clearly does work.
Thanks for sharing! Love that valley.
Magnifique!
Stunning!
What a beautiful thing to see !! 👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️
What a beautiful plane you have! That was a great flight! Congrats on a great flight and a wonderful job on the plane! best of luck to you!
brilliant, but heart stopping; I kept fearing it was going to hit the tents, the 'real' plane, the telegraph poles ... but it didnt ...brilliant
Beautiful, amazing flight.
Undeniably a lovely flight...
Flys beautifully.
Magnificent 😊
Magnifique 😀👌👍👍👍👍👍👍
Fade to black...it doesn't get any better than that!!! I built one of those boxy bipes and it did fly!
Espetacular 🌟
Superb!
It‘s pure Magic!!!👍😘😎
What a beautiful plane.... Turning left near the Provider... Landing perfect.... Come on girl, come on baby...
Magnifique...
Great...❤

sublime
That flight around 2:34 and after, she looks so grand in the sky with those clouds as a backdrop.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍
Wow!
The clear vertical plastic panels between the struts really adds to the dihedral effect and the model is so much more realistic with scale dihedral. I'm guessing there must be a vortex shedding off the vertical panels during sideslip that shifts the overall center of lift between left and right wings. Suggestion: what if you tried half-height or quarter height vertical panels for even more dihedral effect? I feel like a a gap at the top of the of the panels would eliminate a vortex on the underside of the top wing that acts in opposition to the vortex scrubbing the lower wings. Anyway point being experimentation with different shapes would likely yield different amounts of dihedral effect. Perhaps build a less detailed model of the same design to prove out the effect of different shapes? Curtis Jenny would be another ideal model for experimentation with flat wings and different shapes of the clear panels. Thanks for the video Tom great work as usual even with other people's footage!
Loss for words!
Волшебный полёт ❤
vance have you been to the Muncie FAC event in September. Winds seem wonderfully calm there past two years. I know you were scheduled to perform in Evanston which only a few hours c from there.
very nice Vance. I wonder if you have gotten any of my E Mails with some stuff might be of interest in you FAC column? My electric powered Goliath back in 92 did not go so well. Was underpowered. Still hanging in the basement though.
Not a big fan of the large power prop on a big twin look, but a beautifully made airframe that flew nicely.
proper made me laugh. excellent. 11 / 10
I don't see you doing any shorts, but that flyby at 2:33 is shorts-worthy.
Это восхитительно, он словно живой....
Curtains don't work the same as dihedral. The force is about midway up the panel, not far above the CG, small area, low aspect ratio. Not much rolling moment. Good thing there are six of them. But you've got to use what you've got. With dihedral, you have the entire wing panel acting about half way out to the tip, more area, more leverage. My friend Dave used to fly scale models without dihedral. He pointed out that on a biplane, the location of the center of the two wings was still above the CG, thus the side force acted to counter the motor torque. The high wing is doing most of the work. Even the low wing has some rolling moment, as the center of lift is toward the down wing. His planes flew fine. The F.60 has those absurd curtains on the landing gear, which is counter productive, but the high fin helps a little. With counter rotating propellers, torque correction is not required.
Washout tips don't work the same on our little models as it does on full scale planes. On full scale planes, tip washout makes the roots stall before the tips, giving a more gentle buffeting at the beginning of stall, warning the pilot to get the nose down and also preventing loss of aileron effectiveness. We don't have pilots or working ailerons on our models. Also, model airfoils do not stall like full scale airfoils. The full scale airfoil, with Reynolds number in the millions, has a lift coefficient going much higher than a model scale airfoil, Reynolds numbers in the thousands, with an abrupt drop at stall. Small scale airfoil lift coefficients do not go nearly as high as full scale airfoils, and the curve bends over in a gradual hill, without sudden loss of lift. Another justification for washout is to more closely approximate the ideal elliptical lift distribution across the span. The untwisted rectangular wing already has a good approximation to an elliptical distribution and figuring out the effect of different amounts of twist is extremely difficult.
That is an interesting read. Thanks!
- there are no counter-rotating propellers here. They are for scale only. This ship successfully sports one large clear and nearly invisible propeller.
- this ship has washout and I believe it works exactly as on a large ship, the more central areas of the wing stalling sooner than the tips.
- glad you enjoyed my accomplishment. At least I think you did. I’ll bet your dihedral-free flying friend Dave would.
Thanks.

@@vancegilbert1958 The original had counter rotating propellers, making roll correction with dihedral unnecessary. The model flying with a single large prop needs help to counter the roll due to motor torque. Thus the curtains.
You have taken an airplane that has several counts against it as a model and got it to fly beautifully, that's impressive!
I'd want taller grass to soften the landing
What a beautiful plane and color combo.
If that thing catches a thermal it ends up somewhere in earth orbit
Well done. No dihedral wings mean nothing - depending of course on the plane. I built a 1/3 scale Church Midwing back in 2010. Flat bottom all the way, not even any washout. Didn't know the difference. Was very stable in all axis as is your Goliath.
That was spectacular. Me want one ( but I will make it RC ) ...LOL
Жаль что у оригинала 2 винта
love the video but what horrible music
Beautiful!
Wow!
Superb!
