    It is true that the looser the soil the bigger the sweet potatoes can become. I live in an island where sweet potato is the staple but we've never grown it this way.. very interesting how you grow your sweet potato. Will be trying this new technique. We have at least 20 heirloom varieties growing where i live in Northern most island of Philippines. Thank you very much

      We also make nutritious juice from the sweet potato tops by boiling it. You can add up a drop of lemon juice to perk up flavor. The sweet potato tops when sauted, add just enough water is the best cure for hang over! Believe me.

      Very interesting. Thanks for sharing that information. Wow, 20 varieties is a lot! I will have only 9 varieties growing this year. And thanks for the tip on the hang over cure. I'm sure other folks who find this will appreciate that one.

      We are also pretty superstitious when we plant sweet potato. It is a practice handed down to us to plant during full moon and low tide- following such practice has not failed to produce huge and sweetest roots. Thank you and good day.

    • @flowers2270
      @flowers2270 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@drwall1915 .Well, they taste very good when properly cooked and can be eaten with rice, yam, potatoes, cassava. Before you start to cook wash the leaves to avoid sand and insects for a good taste. Next you slice or shred them and keep aside while you work on the ingredients like fish, meat, onion, Maggie cubes, salt and pepper or any seasoning of your choice can be used in this process, for a good tasty soup allow the seasoning to produce good flavor and than set aside the stems ingredients. Next, you heat the oil and put in the onion first before adding the shredded or sliced greens (leaves) to the oil and than fry the greens for at least 5 -6 minutes before adding the stem ingredients that you kept aside. if your stem ingredients continued lot of water you need not add more water otherwise add some water to bring everything to a boil, in the cooking process dry the water off the greens and be left with the oil in the soup by then you can taste your soup for overall seasoning consistency and know it is now ready to be eaten. You can look up some videos on here for potatoes greens soup making for more help.

    I like your harvest. Straw bale looks very easy to harvest. Did you fertilized them? My favorite is the Okinawan variety. I grow 3 varieties this year, Okinawan, Japanese/korean, and the purple purple sweet potatoes, been in the raised bed and grow bags for 5 months still not harvest yet. Don't waste the leaves, especially the young tips, as they are very healthy and tasty in stir fry with salt, sugar, soy sauce, and mushroom seasoning. Thanks for sharing

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes, the straw bales are pretty easy to harvest. I use lots of nitrogen fertilizer when I condition the bale. Then if I remember right, I think I used quite a bit of homemade compost on the bale. I've heard from a lot of people about the leaves, but I still haven't tried them. I hope you have a great harvest!

    • @AwesomeK285
      @AwesomeK285 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@koltoncrane3099 yes it’s the Stoke purple, and I got from Sprouts grocery store. The Korean I got from any asian grocery store can be used to plant, since most are From US mainland and they don’t seem to spray with sprout inhibitors. The Okinawa (white skin purple flesh) is hard to find, since those from asian grocery are sprayed so they won’t sprout. I had to search and bought from homegrown like us.

    I'm definitely going to try this next year. All the sweet potato harvests that I've watched this year leads me to believe I'm doing this incorrectly. I usually save and replant the smallest potatoes from this year. (The size of a french fry). I don't get clusters like everyone else. I'll get one or two together then as the vine grows I'll continue to get one about every 10-12" or so. I like your way better! Great video. Have a great weekend🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I usually start conditioning the bales about the 1st of April, or maybe a little earlier. I kind of go by the weather a little bit, because they take a lot longer to condition the colder it is. I plant the slips about like I plant anything else. I make a planting hole in the bale and add some soil. Here is how I condition the bale if you haven't seen that video: th-cam.com/video/tredysH3-ck/w-d-xo.html
