There was never a moment in my life in the past 20 years, if not more, when I wouldn't have been able what day World War 1 ended. But it took me very long to realise why CBC News is posting videos on this topic this month. On a way more serious note: World War 1 has effects that last until today. It’s different for you, my friend. You weren’t under constant artillery fire, you didn’t see someone fall, you didn’t hear the screams of the wounded or smell the rotting bodies
I don't understand how people are able to think history is boring. Cause history has been dramatic, full of interesting characters, adventure, and discovery. And that all happened.
Can you imagine 18 year olds today being conscripted to go to war? Many can’t handle being told someone has a different viewpoint than them and they need a safe space.
Not only 18 year olds but boys who were younger than that were fighting in the British Army. In fact in WWII on D-Day there was a medic who lied about his age to fight, unfortunately he was killed by a German. I believe he was around 15 when he died but I'm not entirely sure.

“All Quiet on the Western Front” is probably the most accurate about the common soldiery of WW1. The original book was literally written by a Great War veteran, after all.
"Walk a mile in their shoes." NOBODY could walk a mile in their shoes. The bloody things were so cheap, they just fell apart as soon as they got wet. That's where "trenchfoot" gets it's name. Also, "Remember what they did for US," is an overused line. Canada wasn't in danger of being attacked in that war. We joined because Britain joined. We went to serve OTHERS, not ourselves. THAT is why we remember.
