Featured in TIR Episode 96 (Part 1 of 3; see Part 2 here
    • "TRUTH IN RHYTHM" - Em... ): The founder of one of the best-known, most distinctive, most dynamic, most beloved and long-lasting soul-funk groups of all time. Joining the TRUTH IN RHYTHM conversation is none other than Tower of Power saxophonist, composer, producer and all-around leader Emilio Castillo. Now celebrating 50 years and counting, TOP and its world-famous horn section emerged from California’s Bay Area in the late 1960s and have gone on to crank out more than 15 studio albums -- including 2018’s sensational comeback, Soul Side of Town, several live recordings, and numerous hits and cherished songs.
Those include “You’re Still a Young Man,” “What Is Hip?” “So Very Hard to Go,” “This Time It’s Real,” “Time Will Tell,” “Don’t Change Horses (in the Middle of a Stream),” “You Ought to Be Having Fun,” “You Got to Funkifize,” “Soul Vaccination,” “Squib Cakes,” “Drop It in the Slot,” “It Takes Two (to Make It Happen), “We Came to Play” and so many others. Concurrent will their own success, the TOP horns became among the record industry’s busiest session players, seemingly having worked with the most famous artists of the 1970s and 1980s. Those include Otis Redding, Santana, Aerosmith, Elton John, the Rolling Stones, Little Feat, Heart, Graham Central Station, Journey, Cat Stevens, Huey Lewis & the News, Helen Reddy, the Grateful Dead, the Monkees, John Lee Hooker, Rod Stewart, the Brothers Johnson and lots more.
In what just may be the most in-depth interview ever done with Castillo, he reveals Tower of Power’s soup-to-nuts story, from how he became a musician to continuing to inject their busy performing schedule with that same passion and joy today. Along the way are insights into the creative process and what made the band unique, specifics about classic songs and albums, lurid tales of drug and substance abuse, recovery and redemption, and unforgettable stories of highpoints and his incredible experiences.

Here's what I love: the appreciation of TOP is one long slow burn that keeps on growing. Slowly, probably to their chagrin commercially, but culturally beneficial. In 100 years TOP will be regarded, if history is any indication, as THEE funk/soul keepers and creators of the flame. That is what I hope for them.

Sounds like you had the greatest parents, ever. Your Dad was really into his kids. My parents were pretty cool too. I played in clubs by the time I was 14 and made a living at music for 50 years. I still play some. I’m 66

By far the best interview of Emilio I’ve ever heard. Detailed and the stories about the lows of the band. One big omission though: not much detail about the period of Monster through Oakland Zone. Not one word about Brent Carter or Larry Braggs and all those years. Still, I loved listening to all three sessions of this interview.

Great hearing the history behind this great innovator. It's obvious that his life was, and is, music. Some of the greatest music of all time. I don't think we'll ever see this kind of organic, funky, tight band again. Love this interview!

No one considers the years 80 - 82 any sort of high point for the Tower - but they were incredible as of January 81, likewise the studio material they piled up with no record deal is superb.
Michael Jeffries is a deeply underrated pop singer - ToP fan since 1972 and he has become my favourite lead singer of them all - heard only he & Edward McGhee, live, mind you.
But Jeffries has the charm and IMO the best or jazziest ear.
Pretty sure that 1983 video for PA TV show (with Ct and LP now, gone) you can see Princess Diana smiling at Jeffries

THIRD MUSICIAN to say that the Sly Stone show was a sort of ideal - the other 2 who have said the same are Stevie Wonder & John McLaughlin
