    Hi piet, congratulation on the family dairy success,and your 10k subscribers, interesting talk on heifer calf rearing, i know from experience how costly replacements can be and we summer on grass which helps with approx cost of £1500 sterling at point of calving, how does that compare to your rearing costs, thanks from Wales UK 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

      Thank you! Cost of raising heifers is not something I look at often. It can definitely be done at lower cost than how we do it considering the facilities we have for calves and heifers, but I want to raise our heifers here on the farm. Raising them from birth until they enter the milking herd decreases the chance of bringing in disease and allows us to always watch them closely and provide the best care for them. It's hard to put a value on those things, but for me they make up for the added cost. I roughly figured it costs us about $1450 to raise a heifer to calving.

    At a cost of $1450 to raise a calf to cow. And when you sell that animal as a cull weighing 1350# at .55 cents a lb equaling approx $750. Your cost to raise is really only around $700. So my question is, can you recoup that cost on the profit of selling her milk on her first lactation?

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on the milk price and beef price. We're currently receiving $0.85 to $1.15 for sold cows so that makes a big difference. When cull prices have been around $.055 she would be close to recouping her cost near the end of her first lactation or beginning of her second lactation.

    whn u put multiple calves together, don't they such each other? Does it produce their udder blind later?

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's a possibility. That is one of the issues that worry me about group housing for calves being fed milk.

    How many calves do you average per month? Is it pretty consistent throughout the year? At what age do you get rid of your bull calves?

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We average around 150 calves per month, May through August are typically our heavier calving months. We sell our bull calves and crosbred calves at 2 to 8 days old.

    Hello! Where is the limit of how much milk you can give to the calves per day, to get fast growth? Is 8 liters optimal for the calf? Is it profitable to give more? Mikael 🇸🇪

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  ปีที่แล้ว

      We're trying to find the right balance, 8 liters seems to be working good for the calves. If we feed too much I think it might hinder starter intake. At some point we may try to feed more, but I don't like making too many changes, that makes it difficult to assess the outcome.

    Are you selling calves on the basis of genomic testing?
