When & How Much Co2 Does Planted Aquarium Need? Co2 bubbles per second in Planted Aquarium

- In this video, we will see when to diffuse co2 to your aquarium and how much co2 is required for the aquarium.
First thing first, When do we dose co2 to the aquarium, when the aquarium light is switched on. Aquarium plants wake up when the lights are on and with the help of light plants absorb co2 and release o2 generating glucose. plants source of energy. Now it's clear that co2 should be diffused to the aquarium when after the lights are on and turned off once the light is off. Aquarium plants only photosynthesis in the presence of light, so there is no point having the co2 on when the lights are off.
The second question is how much co2 to diffuse into the Aquarium? The optimal co2 for a plated aquarium highly depends upon the size of the tank. For a rough estimate, you can diffuse 2 to 3 bubbles per second for a 1 feet tank, 4 to 5 bubbles for 3 feet tank and so on.
Also, keep in mind that only with trial and error you can find the optimal co2 diffusion for your tank. If the fish from your tank swims to top, that's an indication that the co2 is high in your planted aquarium.

But I have seen all your videos and got to know the balance chemistry of a planted tank in which you have mentioned 6-7 hours of light is required and 3-4 hours co2 is required in which pearling start with 3-4 BPS or 5-6 BPS IS REQUIRED
But may I know these figure are always same for each and every tank size or volume ?
Is applicable for start up tank or for a running tank ??
This a rule of thumb, Most times it is the same but at time we change depending on the aquascape or the type of plants,

Drop checker is a good option
Co2 very big n complex topic.. but u have simplified it and explained it in better way... I use disposable co2 bottles, its diffuser is different where we have to place the diffuser inside the tank and fill the diffuser with co2 it will slowly dissolve in water.. how efficient is it or shod I go for the re-fillable cylinders..
The point here is how well are your plants growing, with your present system ? If they are doing good and the results are as you have expected then why change?
@@MayurDevAquascaper I have a low tech aquarium with plants like java fern crypto anibus Amazon sword n java moss.. all plants r doin good but ludwigia repens n Bacopa is not doin good.. so I wanted to know do I need to switch to big cylinders rather than disposables ones...

Just one question lets say if we start co2 and light for 7 hours in evening, do we need to turn off water filter in this time window? As water filter will remove co2 and add oxygen then its useless to start co2 system.. Rite.. Let me know whats ur openion. Or its ok to run co2, light and filtration system together?
Firstly why in the evening, also if your filter is aggitating the surface then you are using the wrong filter

Dear Sir,
I have started to follow ur video and started a DYI CO2 system due to lockdown. I have one query. How to place the CO2 diffuser so that after diffusion the gas spread across the tank. As in my case the I get namo bubble from the diffuser but it mostly goes up, instead of moving around the tank while it moves in the upward direction. I have a hang on back filter and my tank size is 1 1/2 feet by 1 feet and height 15".
Looking forward for ur reply. Ur videos has motivated me to try planted tank :)
Place it on the opposite side of the filter about 8cm from the bottom of the tank, bubbles will always go up that is natural as Air is lighter than water,
Also make sure the filter out let does not agitate the surface of the water, there will be loss of co2

Sir you have explained in one of the best ways that anyone can... I loved listening to you...i have question sir...i have a 4 x 2 fish tank approx 420 liters of water with plants how much bubble of co2 per second you would suggest
I would keep it at about 3-4 bubbles per second, I use ADA diffusers so the bubbles are very fine and co2 diffusion is good, if you are using a plastic or ceramic diffuser then may be you can use a bit more, try with 3-4 bubbles and if you feel the results are good then fine or you can increase

@@hitenagarwal446 the white part is usually ceramic and it will get blocked very fast so, start with 3-4 bubbles and ingrease if required,
for a 4x2 i would go up to 6-7 bubbles per second

for example if i have DIY co2 and i don't have a control on my co2 and it continues run after light is off.

My water pH is usually at around 8 to 8.2 in my small planted tank. I started co2 dosing today and noted pH dropped to 7.5 . I understand co2 in water forms carbonic acid and dowward movement of pH was expected, my question is can it be used as measure for right amount co2 dosed ?

Sir i have one question.I have 1.5ft X 1ft X 1ft tank with approx 30 ltr water consumption.I switch on my tank light and co2 from 10am to 2pm and again from 4pm to 10pm. Your lighting is wrong, it cannot be in breaks

Air pump gives oxygen not Co2 and the co2 in the air pump is not enough to grow plants
if you have co2 and your system is good the plants will produce the oxygen

Sir I have made a planted tank noe and half month before. I provide co2 from starting. Plants growing well but since Last 10 days the plants stopped perling. And growth rate come down. Please suggest me a good solution. I use Rotala Macrandara, hra, rotunndofolia green, bocopa, AR mini, star grass and Monte Carlo.

Reason behind Asking this question is because .morning to night 10 pm i am not in home .so when i come from office atlist 1 hour i can see my tank with light .light and co2 period is 8 hours
@@riteshshirsat4326 You fix the day and night for your tank, when you switch ON the light it is Day and schedule the co2 accordingly. but remember to stick to the schedule, Plants are creatures of Habit and don't like change

Hi Sir, could you please let me know if running an air stone with a co2 diffuser will be counterproductive? I have a 50 gallon co2 injected tank but my fish start gasping even with 1 bubble per 3 secs. I am thinking of using air stone at the same time as co2. Thank you.
It is counterproductive. Run the air stone at night. Check the water pH too.
You have not told what filter you are using, use filter outletcpipe to create some surface agitation, if fish population is heavy and tank is not heavily planted fish will gasp for oxygen if more than needed co2 given
@@amitacharjee8985 Hey Amit i have a cannister running at 1000l/hr and hob running at 650l/hr also a powerhead inside the tank but not enough surface agitation (50g tank). The fishes are not gasping now as it was the teperature that was causing the water to not being able to hold the oxygen as the water temp was contsantly above 30. I removed the lid and started running a fan over the tank which has helped. Co2 is at 1 bubble per 2 sec and I am running a airstone at the same time. I understand that it is wasting a lot of the co2 but I have moderatly planted mostly low nutrientconsuming plants plants so they are doing alright. I will be increasing the Co2 soon and lets hope the fishes dont start gasping again.
@@FrontierOne 50 gallon is not a very big tank, over filtration is not needed, one canister filter is enough, please use good bio media, ceramic rings are not good, yes temp increase is a problem in india, aquarium chillers are costly, in summer months decrease the co2 rate alittle bit, increase it after july, also remember too much surface agitation cause fungal disease or itch in fish sometimes
Use only the canister filter with inlet water hose above the water and a surface skimmer at the opposite side of the tank,remove old sponges from canister and add more biomedia if you can
I am using recommended amount of Co2 in my planted aquarium (5feet) for a month. My plants are growing well but there is no pearling.. please let me know why and what I must do to get my plants to Pearl . Thanks
Use the right kind and quantity of fertilisers and the right amount of light also
if the plants are growing then dont worry much about it. Pearling is not fundamental to health of plants, plants may not pearl because of a multitude of reasons. There are some plants that may never pearl. Understand that pearling happens if plants photosynthesize at a rate that is faster than the rate of dispersion of gases from the water column. A high flow rate will cause your plants to not pearl as well
when does drop checker needs tobe turn green and how long does drop checker needs to be in green colour(optimum)

Do regular water change and see the plant growth, if its not satisfactory then you'll have to use CO2

1. lack of CO2
2. Lack of the fertilisers that help the plant in absorbing the co2
you need to see which of this is the issue and make the needed corrections

DIy is not a good idea, it is not consistent and will run 24/7 which is not good for your aquarium
Sir, whenever I am giving pressurized CO2 in my tank, my Otocinclus is becoming senseless and even one of them died. Within 1-2 hrs of CO2 supply(1bubble/sec), their behaviour is changing. Please help with your views.

The Co2 can go ON with the Lights, 2 hours is a bit late, On the side of the tank at 50% level, does not matter which side

Yes CO2 levels in air pump methodes will be low as compare to CO2 cylinder methods but if my tank is small or my tank is big but I have less plants then do air pump methode is sufficient? 2 to 3 bubbles depending if the light is good and if not them 1 to 2 bubbles and it should be on for 4 to 5hrs

sir, as u said when the plant r pearling then stop CO2 , but sir my tank life is 2 month, plant growth ok, but i never seen pearling, should i increase the timing of CO2, now i m off co2 after 3 hour 30 minutes
The reasons plants do not pearl
1. The fertiliser to the quantity you are using are not good enough for the plants
2. The light is not enough and the photosynthesis is not happening
3. The Co2 could be inadequate or the diffuser is not functioning well enough
Plant may not pearl if you have high flow rates even. Are your plants growing OK?

Plants grow perfectly well with liquid carbon, this guy is an idiot who doesnt even understand Photosynthesis. CO2 is optimal because it is cost effective, plants use CO2 as carbon source, the dont care if it is coming from CO2 or gultaraldehyde (liquid CO2)

CO2 should be given one hour after light turns on for 3 to 4 hrs

Hello Mayur. I have a Fluval hang on back on a 2 ft aquarium. The surface agitation is quite high. My current BBS is 2-2.5 drops/sec. Will the agitation lead to off-gasing of the co2 which is released in the aquarium and should I inc the BBS? Also the drop checker hasnt changed colour since I installed the co2 cylinder. Its been a week now. Any help is appreciated.

Increase the water level so the agitation is reduced, co2 can go up to 3-4 bbs and also check the quality of the liquid used for the drop checker

I am injecting CO2 with a tank and have CO2art equipment. I feel I am lacking something since plants are doing not the way they are suppose to look when injecting CO2.
Lights on for 6 hrs
CO2 for 6 hours (2 BPS)
Used seachem Flourish tabs when put plants, intend to do so every 3 months
Tropica fertilzer (weekly)
Soil - 40 % seachem Flourite Black and 60% Fluval Stratum
80 F temperature
37 gallons, had to use a wave maker to make sure bubles go around the tank.
Any ideas what might be lacking?

The diffuser you are using is ceramic and probably blocked even after you have cleaned it, ceramic goes bad in 3-6 months
I will tell you the issues, please not this is nothing against a brand but only my opinion

You have products of three brands that will never work together as they are not designed like that, the nutrition levels will be erratic and you are not sure what properties the soil has and what is missing, so again not sure what or how much fertz to add

Just the bubbles moving around will not help, the plant should be able to absorb them
The First step to success is to recognise the problem, the fact that you realised there is a problem is your step towards success
do a bit of homework on the products u are using, you could improve a bit

@nicecook12 understand that the tank takes time to mature..plants need to attain critical bio mass and things stabilize..personally using an internal diffuser is much better but Kudos on making the CO2 going around, dose Magnesium if you arent doing so already..research EI and save tons of money instead of buying branded fertilizzers. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your substrate..read up on CEC, if you are dosing water column then substrate is of importance only for heavy root feeders like echinodorus.
Most Importantly..STOP WATCHIN HIS GARBAGE CHANNEL AS A SOURCE OF INFORMATION ON THE HOBBY!!!!! Watch his channel when you want to know how ADA markets and what ADA products are used for
