The leading cause of serving/string wear to my knowledge (besides dry fire) is actually the latch, and it's particularly bad for budget crossbows. The machine leaves jagged edges that you have to file down, so it passes smoothly over the latch cocking and discharging. If you don't, it will continually shank your serving and string until you do - or it eventually wears itself down. You could go through 1k+ shots and multiple strings before that happens. But that will also vary by bow and the material the rail is made from, and how precisely jagged it was machined. It is definitely not necessary to wax the serving, but it will not really degrade any faster unless you over wax frequently. You can use a cheap .25 cent nail file to smooth it out for polymer frames, or a medium grit sand block for sturdier material. Anyone with a new crossbow should disassemble and inspect the latch corners before taking it out to shoot.

My serving string broke and is dangling. Probably because I didn't lube my crossbow after buying it new.

Take it apart if you have to and inspect the corners on your latch. If you had string problems on a new bow, it is likely from snagging jagged corners. I left a comment in the main video explaining how to resolve this issue. It is super easy. And while you have it broke down, you can take that time to either sand out the rail a little bit and buff it out, then apply your lube. Or just apply the lube and let the rail wear naturally.

Are you using wax to lube the rail?

No, we are using a dual purpose lube for the rail! True wax is for strings and cables only.

@@pyramydair ok cool. Thank you for the clarification
