I'm similar I find shops difficult because of noise and pressure to talk to people. In terms of street directories I have a collection of local and national ones for my country including one of my city from 1953 (passed down from my grandparents) which I absolutely love looking through!

@cityplannermismanages England! The Ordinance Survey maps (national mapping agency) have existed since 1801. The one I have from 1953 is a bit ripped and worn since it's been used a lot, but the old paper and font styles it uses are really cool to see. I love seeing how the area has developed over time since the map was made.

I know it isn't as old, but I have a 1999 directory of my city. I absolutely LOVE looking through it, and comparing everything to my 2025 directory! That's soooo cool that you have a directory from '56! The city I live in would have almost been a paddock of sheep!

I remember when I was younger I had an interesting obsession with trying to find the locations of fictional shows or movies as if they were real places using various environmental clues. Whenever a map was shown I would go onto Google maps and search for any sort of similarity that would match up (the Goiky canal isn't a canal, it's the strait of Gibraltar!) but most of the time it wouldn't really match the setting. I felt like I was a detective solving some sort of mystery even if I didn't make much progress, lol. On the other hand, this exercise did improve my geography knowledge a great degree!
Also, props for using Duolingo sounds lol

As a person on the spectrum, I’ve gotten really used to shopping. I view it on the same level as going to the dentist or getting a flu shot. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s necessary. Luckily, I live in a part of America where it’s uncommon for a cashier to make small talk with you as they scan your stuff. A simple “thank you” is the only thing you need to say to them, and you’re on your way.

I often get overwhelmed by the items on the shelves, and get distressed when I can't find what I'm searching for, even if it's in front of my eyes. I also like to use Google Maps to pick a time when there's not a lot of people, and I use the machine checkout whenever possible.

My first memory of a street directory was when I was six years old and got a street directory as a present. I looked at that thing for hours, and it's what kick-started my love for street directories. It really was the perfect present. I was however already into mapping. I remember going to my grand-parents house every day after pre-school and kindergarten. My pop had these MASSIVE A1 sheets of paper, and I would spends hours drawing roads for me to drive my matchbox cars on, and then I would add more and more sheets, and the "map" would get bigger and bigger. I think the record for the most amount of A1 pages stuck together was 24. Good times. Anyway, can't wait to see your next map! My next one is nearly finished. (btw I have also been very tempted over the years to buy that Sydney directory, even though I'm not from Sydney. If I bought it I would be looking at it for the next year!)

Shopping gets so overstimulating, hard agreed > X < If autistic people were the majority on store construction teams, there would be a lot more attention to acoustics and not creating spaces that are inaccessible auditory nightmares lmao.
here's a menu selection of my specific coping strategies/knowledge for you or anyone else that might want to hear some new stuff to add to their roster:
-Silicone earplugs are so good. I use clear ones that are shaped like mushrooms with multiple thin caps stacked on top of one another. They're ultra cheap, come in a little pocket case, and never need to be replaced, meaning no extra tasks of keeping a regular stock of foam ones.
-Quick trips are key. I view stores as dealing constant psychic damage that chips away at my HP slowly. The less time I spend in the damage zone, the more HP I leave with.
-It helps to have a shopping list organized by what section of the store items are in, so I only have to visit each section once.
-If the store has an online shop, I like to make my shopping list by just adding items to my cart online, then looking at it in-store on my phone. It often lets me check if items are in stock before I go there, and do all my product comparisons and browsing online, then pick up exactly what I need quickly in the store with a handy reference image of the packaging. Or I buy things online using the "pick up in store" option to have someone else pick out everything for me and avoid a cashier/line, but some things I'd like to pick out myself. (like trying to avoid yucky feeling paper). It's so nice to leisurely build an online cart over a few days as I remember things I need, then just pick up my order after work one day.
-Sometimes in really large chain stores, the online item will tell me the exact aisle it's located in in the store, or at least what section it's in, which is nice for navigating and avoiding interacting with people.
-Most branded box stores have similar section layouts within all their stores, which helps with navigating new stores quickly if I'm familiar with a different store of the same brand.
-Hand carts are much easier and faster to navigate around the store with than large shopping push carts. ESPECIALLY when it's busy. Aisles can become traffic jams with people and carts but it's much easier to speedwalk around them with a hand basket.
-Going to larger stores during non-busy times helps drastically with the people/noise. Some stores have information on google maps about what times they're usually busy/not busy, and even live updates on if there are more or less people in the store than usual.

    • @cityplannermismanages
      @cityplannermismanages  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Headphones, noise cancelling ones are the go, wear them everywhere. Never tried Silicone earplugs. Quick trips too, also less busy hours, like really late at night, 9pm. Oh yeah never use push carts, always a basket. Great tips, love them.

On shops: Yes, i too hate them a lot for the reasons ya mentioned... But ive the right gear to equip myself so theyre not so big an issue for me
I still mask up when i go to shops, which bas the side benefit of removin the expectation of others that i provide visual cues with my facial expressions
Particularly bcuz i also come equipped (soundin like im a toy action figure with that wordin xD) with dark sunglasses which both grtly reduce the intensity of the bright shop light, and remove the expectation i provide eye contact or facial features
And for the noise ive noise cancelin headphones and a youtube same show (Citation Needed by the Technical Difficulties) saved to my phone, as well as music if i need smth stronger to combat noise (mostly steven universe music; or other cartoons) (tho thats more for hvy traffic rly when i may need constant noise battlin it even with ANC headphones on); and this drowns out everythin and means ppl dont expect me to talk to them
Tho ofc i may need to say some scripted words dependin on circumstance, but if i just walk up to buy my stuff and dont talk, with my whole getup; they dont try to talk to me, bcuz they can tell im not talkative. I do usually still try to tell them thanks and have a nice day as i leave all the same bcuz i dont wanna come across as rude there
I also bring a stuffed animal in my backpack, and i put my backpack and stuffy in the cart, along with my cane, and i can stim with them if i get overloaded by anythin or to just preempt smth i think may be overwhelmin.
If im alrdy overloaded by the time i get to the shops, ill sometimes even keep my pacifier in under my mask, as this oral stim is my main go to stim; its also the ONLY reason i think i can deal with things like walkin by busy roads as well as i can.
I used to always grind my teeth and that actually contributed to why ive no top front teeth anymore, as they just got worn down by constant grindin... I didnt even notice it bcuz it was subconscious, i didnt know i was autistic back then; and just had been taught to suppress my desires to stim... Which just meant my stims became maladaptive like grindin my teeth; no one saw it so it didnt bother anyone... But it was hurtin me, a lot; all cuz they saw smth wrong with when i flapped my hands or bounced my leg or counted numbers for "too long" or did anythin else they deemed wrong

@@cityplannermismanages These last several yrs have rly helped me to unlearn the maladaptive stuff ingrained in me by ableist standards, esp now i live with my fiance (he/they) and have his constant reassurance as a fellow autistic; he also helped me get my dental care taken care of
I used to stillve my front top teeth but they were all worn down and id get abscesses nearly yrly, wasnt until i met my fiance that i was able to get proper dentalcare; cuz USA is shite at that and considers dental a luxury in more states than youd expect. Gettin those broken teeth pulled stopped the abscesses and is the first step towards gettin me partial dentures; things i nvr imagined possible for me when i felt beholden to ableist standards... I used to rly feel like there was no pt to life; but figurin out my neurodivergence, around the same time i figured out my gender, as well as brkin away from abusive biofam, did a lot to improve my mental health and let me envision a future for myself
And its a future where i stim more openly, like how i use my paci even when out walkin down the street, and like how i happily rock when with my friends; most them are also autistic so when we hang out, one of us starts stimmin and the rest soon follow more oft than not; esp rockin

I have a love of art, organization, and puzzles. In fifth grade I found half-size sheets of graph paper in my classroom. For months I was using them to make mazes. By the time the school science fair rolled around, I had enough pages that, when I connected them all into one giant maze, they covered one of those school cafeteria tables (the ones with the attached benches that can be folded up and stored against the wall). I got it laminated and set it up with dry erase markers so that people could try it for a prize (candy). Yes, it was huge, yes it had only one solution, and yes, I had it memorized. Only two other kids made it through the maze. At the end of the science fair I was told that it didn't count as a science project so I didn't get counted as having participated. Thinking back on it now, I think *I* was probably the science project the maze was demonstrating, lol! A year later my mother introduced me to counted cross-stitch (art combined with graph paper combined with pretty colors?!?!) and now I'm 43yo and still stitching, still loving graph paper (for various projects).
As for shopping, if I'm familiar with the store layout, know what I want to get, and have a route planned out, I don't find them too stressful. I try to avoid the really big stores like Walmart, because of the noise, the crowds, and the in-your-face advertisements.

I didn't start liking city design, it started with Teslas automatic open door from phone key and got into it (never was a car person)
Then I learned how to fix traffic with trams and got cities skylines.. made everything low density and had a wall of traffic though the city.
Then Mini Metro to figure out how to make the spoke design
Went from a 50,000 population with grid lock to 150,000 without any traffic (until cargo trains backed up)
Me seeing suburbs scared me when I saw your maps. Have been against single family housing since I learned how affordable mid rise towers are and have a district with the business on the outer ring, residential as the middle ring with the buildings surrounding semi private shared spaces, and a large public park in the middle and the block stretches for miles to have uninterrupted bike transportation though the trees.
Oh, and the district surrounded by a tram, so you are never more than 1/4 mile from a tram and you just ride the tram to see every business.
And schools and other public buildings in the park area
TLDR: I've thought about city maps too, less about detail and more about maximizing functionality and efficiency, and lots of green space

Hi I love your videos. One of my biggest interests is stationary, so if you need any advice on what pens or paper to get I can highly reccomend a few different items for this kind of thing
    For drafting:
I use a lead holder with 3b lead. I love to use them with 5.6 mm lead because then you don't particularly need a special sharpener and the lead is super soft, you don't have to press so hard or touch the paper and you can get a wide variety of strokes (it's thick enough you can colour things in really easy but also you can line with it because you can sharpen it to a point) the other bonus to having a lead holder with thick lead is that you hardly ever need to replace the lead, (I have been using my 5.6 lead holder for ~3 years and have only needed to replace the lead once.) You can also get them in smaller sizes with special sharpeners. I hate the brittle lead in mechanical pencils/pencils in general, also the wood doesn't feel very pleasant to me on wooden pencils (I have given myself raw spots on my hands by using these before)
As for pens I highly suggest and almost exclusively use the pilot fixion line because the ink flows really nice, they have markers, highlighters and pens, all of the ink is erasable! Most erasable pens I found in the past didn't work very well but the ink in the frixion line is heat activated, as long as you keep the rubber tip clean of other things it works perfectly. They also sell refills you can order them all on amazon
For paper I highly reccomend you go with a multimedia sketchbook that is heat pressed. You can get lots of different ones for a decent price and most of them are coil bound with perforated paper for easy tearing
For lining I reccomend tombow mono liners , this is a bit fancier but I've tried them against lots of different fine liners and they feel alot less scratchy
    Happy mapping!
My brother also loves to map, he likes organic fantasy maps. I'm a concept artist so I dabble a little bit into it, even though it's not my favorite. I really love to see the thought that goes through the city planning, how people's desire to go to a store etc shapes the city. My neighborhood is a city planning disaster, everything floods and 4 other people share my postal adress and street number 😢 I hate going to the store too with my autism because of the noise and the awful incandescent lights they always use (????why do they do this???) but also because if I need to buy something I need to weigh all of my options and end up stuck there for a long time (especially if there's interesting things to look at, then I don't want to leave)
I think the worst part of it for me is the sensory processing part, too much going on, too many products to look at, too many sounds etc. I once spent a few minutes in an antique store that had cool things to look at, there was so much that I only lasted a few minutes then needed a rest, which is scary if you're making it into meltdown territory and you still need to find a way home.
Online shopping has helped me with this alot, although it can be stressful not knowing exactly what I'm getting.

I don't like going to the shops for similar reasons but also because there are cameras everywhere nowadays I like to cover up my face if I have to go shopping. I'm pretty sure chains like woolies and coles have some kind of facial recognition tracking software. I hate that so I like to wear a hat and sunnies and only pay cash.

It's weird. It's been awhile that I don't heard an echo-y shop here in France. Shopping is fine for me. The sound are mostly tamed. And most of the time, I have my headphones with noise canceling.
And if I want to stay eating at the McDo, I come off rush hours, or have my headphones. I have heard things I couldn't imagine. I should have written them, it would have been a great Book.
Glossy paper don't go well with every pen. I like them with a pen that slide easily.
I prefer "basic" paper with the small squares (5mm x 5mm).

    My recommendations:
    - Clairefontaine printer paper 90g/m³ (cheap-ish, should be about 12 euros)
    - basically anything from muji, they have nice booklets with lined, checkered or blank paper.
    - bic crystal 1mm pens (cheap, get 50 pack)

I feel so akward in public in general, but I hate shopping or busy streets even more. Too many people, too much moise, too many eyes that I feel on me even when I rationally knows that nobody give a f... about me or what I'm doing. And I have to look the people I'm interacting with in the eyes, and use extreme courtesy as a shield for my own akwardness in talking to people. And having this constant impression that I'm making a fool of myself and can't help but quietly mumble about everything I'm doing to calm myself.
    Exhausting.
Except bookstores, bookstores are heaven. I can spend hours in a bookstore, going from a book to the next with the overexcitement of a child in a candyshop. I remember a bookstore owner being awed someone was that happy to be in his shop.
    Books are the best :D
But clothing shopping is the worst. In addition of all the bad things related to shopping, I have to look at every item, then choose some and try them on, all that for the majority of them not being a good fit, then going to another store to do the exact same thing.

I love maps and detailed drawings a lot. My problem with them is that they start to look dirty once you add a lot of details (I probably love small patterns more than big ones. I love looking at maps from afar, and parents needed magnifying glass to look at my school drawings). I wish there was a way to make 3d drawings so I could have another axis to work with. Also shopping can be hard. Thankfully my local shops don't have music going and I live in eastern Europe so people rarely talk to eachother let alone do small talk. I also go shopping rarely and to different stores so people don't recognise me. Also if I try to act naturally I do something wrong and only end up panicking even more. So instead I imagine I'm a newbie secret agent learning to act naturally and if I do something wrong that's natural. People probably think I'm weird but for some reason that works XD

not buying ultra cheap for important stuff is one of my principles. Unless you have a good reason to go cheap, of course.
Because let's say you buy a house with cheap doors, cheap kitchen equipment... All you're going to do is replace them after 10 or 15 years. In the end it will cost the same price as more expansive equipment so it is better to directly buy the more expansive stuff.
That being said, it is not always possible to do so, which is when cheaper comes to play.
