    Eric Coates.
Refreshing, flamboyant, and veddy, veddy, British.
Just the right recipe to raise spirits in those dark war years.

Lyadov's A Musical Snuffbox is a true classic. Can never get enough of it!

Don't you mean you can never get e"SNUFF" of it? Yes indeed, a great little piece.

The Concertino for Piano by Jean Françaix is a delightful work - and all its four movements coming in at less than 8 minutes !

Arcangelo Corelli came to mind as soon as I saw this topic. All movements very short with lots of emotion. Much of the Baroque Era was short Trio Sonatas, Violin Sonatas, Concerti Grossi, Concertos, and Orchestral Suites.

Malcom Arnold's dances and Britten's Matinees/Soirees Musicales. Short and tuneful.

The wonderful Webern example you sang had around 16 notes... Find the mistake ☝🏻 thank you for all your great work, you're a gem!

It's nice you mentioned Leroy Anderson and French composer Francis in the same video. Did you know that Leroy Anderson composed a short little piece for Francis? He called it "POLINK POULENC POLUNK" !!!!! I know, they don't get much better. THANKS DAVE !!!!

It's no surprise that so many of these are largely piano works, and so that explains I suppose why my immediate thoughts were of Domenico Scarlatti and Federico Mompou. I had never thought of Jánaček as a miniaturist, yet it has always occurred to me that Pohadka is a perfect introduction to the composer--and I still find it as beautiful as anything else he wrote.

Sir, it was a pleasure to hear you mention that list. My personal favorite Poulenc is Les Animaux Modèles, so delightful! And I'm sure listeners know that catchy Typewriter tune. I bought a Double CD 35 years ago, and still listen to Leroy Anderson with much pleasure!

The Model Animals is my favorite piece by Poulenc also. Love the MAN WITH TWO POSSIBLE WIVES section.

I expected Milhaud to be on the list. Granted, he did a good bit of full-length works, but he was really in his element with miniatures.

Thank you so much for giving me permission to not feel guilty about neglecting massively long works. I've never made it through a Wagner opera or a Bruckner Symphony without giving up and going back to my Haydn and Dvorak favorites. I've always felt bad about that but life is too short and The Ring is very very long.

Tjajkowski as ballet suite composer ought to qualify: catchy pieces that never lasts long enough to bore anybody suffering from short attention span.

Sometimes when a cd is full of piano works i will program a sonata and just listen to that. This is a great subject.

Totally agree, Dave. On how to be intense and emotionally interesting in short time frames I’d add Schumann. Yes he wrote long form stuff but it’s really the short more fragmentary stuff that keeps his reputation so high. Also someone here mentioned Johan Strauss - well, there’s another very different example and so much pleasure too!

That's an argument for the great lieder. Some composer's greatest music, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Ravel, Debussy, Poulenc, Wolf, Turina, etc. in under five minutes. Take two, they're small. But not small in largeness and intensity of expression. Auch kleine Dinge.

Debussy on Grieg's works:"pink bonbons stuffed with snow"-a fairly snobby take.

Sviatoslav Richter wrote that Alfred Brendel once told him that the Grieg Piano Concerto was 'music for chambermaids'. OMG, where do you even start replying to this nonsense ? PS: another first class talk here from DH

Not just Biber, any Renaissance or Early Baroque instrumental Music composer have written wonderful, short yet dense gems.

I'm glad you didn't recommend Vivaldi. The guy who wrote the same concerto 500 times (according to Stravinsky). He's a staple of what passes for classical radio these days because his concerti are short (around 12 minutes each) and easy to listen to. The only classical station in Los Angeles programs a Vivaldi piece *every hour*. Yeesh.

I’d add Dag Wiren! Every one of his compositions is perfectly crafted, concise, and without a single note wasted, not to mention full of contrast, energy, and great tunes. Personally, I’d rather listen to such composers on a regular basis than Bruckner, Mahler, etc, though I’m aware I’m in a very small minority here.
