Just because kimmel has 50mil doesn't make 40k a small amount for a 14 year old
memorization isn't really "smart" but the way the kid figured out what Guillermo was doing and was able to correctly spell the rest of the words. That shows problem solving skills. And he did it on the fly. Pretty amazing.
jzizzles Its is impossible to rote memorize the dictionary lol. Spelling bees at the highest levels are about pattern recognition and problem solving based on clues like language of origin, part of speech etc.
@@user-btszi7et a scrabble player once memorized the entire french dictionary and won a french scrabble competition. He didn't speak french.
silem Bochum it isn't the same, in scrabble, you don't need to understand the pronunciation, just the order of words. Many terms also aren't even on the dictionary (the ones that they have to spell at finals for example)
It isn't that hard though, I could recognize and spell all the words he said. Even the ones the kid couldn't. I think that normal spelling bee shows a lot more reasoning and "smart"

Everyone. I was Speller 519 at the Bee this year. Y’all are being so mean to Karthik. He is a nice person and a really good speller. It doesn’t matter what his ethnicity is or how he appears on camera. How would you feel being on camera for a 10 hour day? You’re spelling words most people have never even thought they would hear! The Bee isn’t just memorization. You learn roots, vocabulary, rules of different languages! You make new friends and you stay in touch after the bee. The next time you make a comment, realize that there is a real person on the screen. That person might read your comment. How would you feel?

3:26 He actually wasn't wrong. If you turn on the captions and look at it, you will find that he actually spelled the word 'huarache'. The mascot guy, "Guillermo",mentioned that the word he said was of Mexican origin and the word 'huarache' is of Mexican origin. His pronunciation of the word also mimics the pronunciation of the word 'huarache'. So it is logical to think that the word is indeed 'huarache'. I do know this was meant as a joke and that the mascot person was deliberately mispronouncing the words for comical purposes, but I do want to point out that the 14-year-old speller was not intentionally spelling the word incorrect. I have noticed that the speller also displayed some problem-solving skills as after he and Jimmy Kimmel spelled the words they were asked to spell wrongly, the speller found out that Guillermo was deliberately mispronouncing the words. He didn't just purely memorized words after words mindlessly. He also displayed a level of intelligence indemonstrable by just remembering the spellings of difficult words. Overall, that speller was a good sport and he really deserved the trophy at the end.

Its the way he talks actually that gives out that he is Indian-born. His body language and reactions to what was going on also give out a little. For example when was receiving the Xbox , he wasn't so ecstatic nor did he change a shade. That kind of thing is a common thing that we Indians do when we are nervous and stuff.Also , that kind of shyness and awkwardness is present only when u have moved from India. American born and raised Indians look a little more confident or rebellious sometimes. Cos they get the white people mannerisms when they are interacting. Camera shy is almost an exclusively Indian thing unlike white people who seem like they are born to stand in front of a camera.
So if this was a white kid up there the comments would be completely different. It's honestly upsetting how judgemental and racist people can be.

I know this sounds like a stereotype or something but Indians are so smart. Like every indian i have met (which has the chance to get a proper education) is smart. It’s like their brain is superior😂
Theres 4 indian kids in my school, they get the best grades in class and their parents have really good jobs too :)
Indians give top priority to education (ancient cultural tradition I guess) and mostly Indians ( Especially in US) have stable families and good income ,so they excel.
If every Indian you have ever met has been here in the U.S., then by definition you are meeting the more privileged and educated tier of the Indian population, who could afford to travel overseas. They are starting out with advantages other Indians don't have and most of them work extra-hard once they get here. It has nothing to do with superior brains.

ajay sharma I'm an IIT student. Its not the IITs that does it. Its the student. IITs have the same professors (majority) as any other good college in India. Lectures and the exams are the same last minute hassle. Its the students' dedication that takes them to the IITs and then beyond. Btw Satya Nadella is not from IIT. IITs give you the opportunities. Rest is all the student. "Product of IIT" is nothing.
