This group represented some of the best of the 60's folk-rock groups. So iconic with Cass Elliott, Dennis Dougherty, John and Michelle Phillips creating such as smooth, unique blend of melody and harmonies. We lost Cass Elliott far too soon...thanks for the trip down memory lane!

The Mamas & the Papas were a great folk rock group in the 60's. I had their records. They were known for their smooth harmonies. They had lots of great hits such as "Monday Monday", "Dedicated To The One I Love", "Words Of Love", "Dancing In The Street", "Look Through My Window", "Creeque Alley", "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)", "Safe In My Garden", "I Saw Her Again" etc. Mama Cass Elliot went solo & had a big hit with "Dream A Little Dream Of Me".

The Preacher LIKED THE COLD... That way he was confident that the visitor would likely stick around (inferring here...) that he would have a better opportunity to preach (witness) to this young stranger. At least that is how I always understood this song's meaning. Great classic offering of the 60's! ✌

The Mamas And The Papas are a legendary 60's folk rock group known for their great harmonizing. "California Dreamin" is an iconic classic and their signature song. Other great songs from them are "Monday Monday", "Dedicated To The One I Love" and "I Saw Her Again Last Night".

I first heard "I Saw Her Again Last Night" coming from a truck that had a big swinging ride on it, that went down all the streets in the summer in NY. You'd get on in rows, and the man would swing the cage left and right and achieve some decent heights. Afterwards they would give you a piece of gum or something. Anyhow, I heard the song blasting from the truck's front mounted speaker with the bass booming with that great walking bass line.

Michelle Phillips was the quintessential 60s chick. Loved her long hair and beautiful smile. Cass had the strongest voice of the two, but Michelle harmonized very well with her.

I was born in NY and lived there for the first 14 years of my life. But I eventually moved to California and have lived here a long time. I don't miss the cold of NY. John and Michelle Phillips wrote the song while they were living in NY. Michelle apparently missed California. The flute solo was played by a session musician, Bud Shark. He also played the saxophone. In the 1950s Shark played in the Stan Kenton band. Supposedly, he improvised the flute solo for California Dreamin' . Bud Shark passed away in 2009. And unfortunately, only Michelle Phillips is left from the Mamas & the Papas. After the Mamas & the Papas disbanded Michelle Phillips went on to have a decent acting career. And MOM.... why don't you take up that flute?! C'mon! There are plenty of free lessons and tips for flute players on TH-cam. You're never to old and it's never to late to follow a dream.

If you'd like to hear some more flute in classic rock songs, you should check out some tracks by Jethro Tull and The Moody Blues, both of which incorporated flute into many of their tracks. In the case of the Moody Blues, the flute is used in a similar way to what you heard here. A melodic accompaniment with occasional, more or less, traditional solos. Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, on the other hand, turns his flute into a lead rock instrument, taking solos that rival guitar solos.

Love all the music they made. I had this original album. But it was highly produced. Their vocals were overdubbed to sound like 20 instead of 4. And there is a lot of studio musicians in the background. They could never do this live with just the 4 of them.

As someone who grew up in the 60’s and 70’s this is one of my favorite songs by the group. They only lasted 3 years but what they did in those 3 years was amazing. John Phillips was the genius and brains of the group. His arrangements and harmonies were unparalleled. John was married to Michelle who was 16 when they met and John was a married man with children. There was a love triangle with Michele and Cass who was in love with Denny. So you can see the problems I’m not going into detail. There only #1 song was Monday Monday. John wrote “I Saw Her Again Last Night” as John said to Punish Denny so every time they sang it, was directed to Denny. A little history lesson lol thx for playing this great song.

Kinds of goes with, "my girlfriend/wife/.etc. is a misdemeanor ... the more I kiss her, de meaner I get !!!"

Speaking of songs with flute solos (aside from anything by Jethro Tull), Chicago's song, "Color My World" was huge for weddings in the 70s, I'm sure Mom probably knows it. But it has a beautiful flute solo which I transcribed onto paper for a flute player friend (I'm a guitarist) who had been asked to play it at a wedding. The sheet music had only the piano part but not the flute.

Such a wonderful reaction! I am a huge fan of flute, I hope you will check out the 'rock n roll flute' in Jethro Tull's Locomotive Breath (even if you don't react to it.)

Funny little story. Some New Yorkers found this song offensive because they felt Californians found us to be a grey, gloomy, depressing place that made them rush back to their precious LA 😂At least that’s what my parents and older siblings told me😊
