    I got one and had to super glue the housing to the cap, but after that it's perfect. Love it. I use it about 70% of the time. Thank you

    I am legally blind with limited vision and I use a white cane when I go outside near traffic,going up and down stairs,in the malls,curbs, on the buses etc but not inside the house

    Very handy posting, thanks. I've been given my cane on 29/12/22, (I'm 68), and yes, I have felt a bit of a pratt using it, BUT I do find, by and large it brings out the best in people, absolute strangers who will ask if you want any help and engage, which is usually very pleasant. Interested in the extendable cane, my current one is like the firsy one you demonstrated. Keep up the excellent work young man. :-)

    Maybe we need to start an "Embrace the Cane" movement! I hate my cane, but I hate walking in to stuff more!!!

    I have not embraced the white folding cane yet. I rely way to much on my white support cane also provided for me, but when I am out at night I should be using the folding one. I just have to get over the stigma that comes with it. Slowly working on it though. I take it when I have to go to my eye appointments in Toronto. It was just so comforting to hear I am not the only one that feels this way. It can be an extremely useful tool, but I just have to work on what other people are seeing when I use it.

    Thank you. I was TH-cam surfing and came across your video. I'm legally blind in my left eye 20/200, and in my right eye: only blurred shadows due to 4 rejected corneal transplants because of keratoconus. I have a white stick but never use it... Due to the level of vulnerability accompanying it. I love in NY. people here think that because I can see them, I'm not blind. They only see one aspect of using a white stick and that's complete blindness. I have the same issues and I use a regular cane to determine depths and differential distances due to sudden drops.
    Thank you so very much.

    I spoke to a mechanical engineer near me. I'm going to build a real metal telescoping cane that is rugged and heavy duty. Sort of like a police baton but longer and still able use as self defense. I'm paying for them to fabricate a single prototype.

    Hey Sam I know I've seen your video before this video I don't remember if I've commented before but if I did will just consider this as an update I did get a cane and started using it it did feel kind of weird at first and it still does feel weird every now and then because I'm in a situation like you or I don't need it all the time. As a matter of fact I probably have a little more than enough Vision to get around without the use of it because I have restricted peripheral vision and issues with depth perception and I also don't see very well at night I will also use it for steps and curbs I also cannot tell where asphalt needs concrete is that a step or is it all flat? So I use the cane for those two purposes one for identification so I don't bump into people so much because if they're not directly in front of me I don't see them and the second reason is for steps and curbs and minimal use of night. At first I got a telescoping cane exactly like the one you're showing in this video but I don't like the fact that sometimes it doesn't hold and it retracts and collapses into itself so I then went with a 61 inch folding cane with the ball tip and I like it. When I was a child I was briefly introduced to the white cane when I had Mobility training but it was not focused on the cane itself so I was not actually formally trained on how to use a cane I am using it on my own right now because the usage is so minimal I don't think I need Cain travel training right now but I may acquire it in the future if I feel that I'm going to have to depend on the cane a lot more example if I should lose more vision and really go severely blind.

    So...I bought one, got it and like you said "lightsaber"! My problem is that when I went to extend it, it was jammed in. I can't get it out. I tried twisting and turning, tapping and thumping, pliers and screwdrivers. I do carry it cause I use Velcro to hang it from my HD leather jacket (coolness factor +50% with a lightsaber)! How do I get it all the way out?

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know that when you extend it, you can give it a twist to lock it in place. Maybe it’s just twisted a little too much and locked in the closed position. Other than that, I have no idea.

    Asked my sons Mobility teacher about this cane she warned me off. She said the professors at the VIP college said that they can collapse pretty easily and sometimes even on street crossings. They turn on each joint to lock in position and the professors say they wiggle loose and will do that with no notice. What is the communities opinion on the product? Has anyone had simular issues?

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are absolutely right! I really need to make an updated video because my opinions on these canes have changed since then. They collapse all the time and it drove me crazy! Then, one time when I was trying to close it, it broke. I’ll probably never get a telescopic Kane again.

    Ok so you're not blind....you're visually impaired. See this is the problem that exists in this community. Visually impaired people call themselves blind to the point that when an actual blind person is in need of help, people always think that they can see something. I can't tell you how frustrating it is for my father (who IS actually blind) for him to tell someone that he's blind and then after a bunch of odd looks followed by pushing or pulling of some kind, they ask,"You mean you can't see anything?" like NO HE CAN'T SEE ANYTHINGGGG!!!!! THAT'S WHAT BEING BLIND MEANS!!!!!! So my question is,"Why are visually impaired (VI's) telling people that they are blind? Because anyone who's actually blind will tell you that there's a significant difference between being visually impaired and being blind - the 2 are definitely NOT synonymous!

    Since it does not have a locking mechanism, I'm curious as to how easily it will close in on itself during usage.
    Also, I've heard that fiberglass is prone to splintering, which can be a real pain to deal with.
    Would you please share your experience with it in that aspect?

      Actually, the cane broke pretty soon after making that video. It also didn’t work very well in general. Unless you tightened it pretty securely, the cane would just collapse on you while using it. Honestly, unless you need a super small Kane, I don’t recommend telescope canes

    Thank you Sam .I want one. I find the debate of cane usage surrounded by confidence and self esteem . oh the debate my husband calls them a crutch but. I find no problem in using one. except society. the want to shame you because of them not accepting it them selves. i.my family for instance. in the sixties a sight impairment was a taboo subject. I find that attitude dumb. Their own ignorance has made it more challenging to accept myself. Through counseling I have learned to accept myself. I have been sight impaired all my life. but a cane user for 10 years now. I am where you are on usage. real test was a Bernie Sanders event at a park. it was dark and the ground was sloping. I was having to keep up with a large crowd of sighted people. I found out get this a crowd of 1500. I am proud of my skills and love my independence. trustworthy helpful crowd too. they helped me find the bus stop. I got the last bus home.i want to find out about the other cane you mentioned. I apologize I am typing on my phone keyboard. I can barely see what I m doing. .I use TalkBack but shut it off . I was gaming. Hayday. paradise bay. and township. fishdom..I use a droid. I wish they would put droid games on your desktop. ADA. just like ceiling fixture s in apartments. I am a student. do you know of blackboard. it is where your courses are downloaded to your devices. They are ADA compliant. They use Jaws. I would like your feedback.hayday97. Gishdom163. paradise bay 65. Township 65.
    I like the games from APH. do you? simple though. Tetris is my favorite. flowfree tubes is fun too. I would like to get a set up like yours. totally cool..55 and a gamer. I hope to find a blue cane. God bless. keep up the great videos.Do you cook much?

    I am visually impaired from Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). In your video as what you describe your situation is exactly the same as mine. My vision is getting worse and I hadn't gotten any training for using cane yet. I had relize on my family help, which I know not good thing at all and I limited myself and avoid going places, out night time and not putting myself in that position. Long story but just try figure out. I feel going through a hard time. Great video.

    YOU NEED TO HAVE YOUR CANE OUT WHEN YOU GO OUT TO LET PEOPLE KNOW.ANDE TO COVE YOUR BUTT. IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE SEEING AND DONT HAVE YOUR CANE OUT. YOU ARE JUST ANOTHER PERSON ON THE STREET. what helped me with getting and using a cane was, if I need glasses, I get them. If I need crutches, I will get that, and use them. So I need this cane. A carpenter, doctor, or everyday person has tools they use everyday. No matter how others may see them. I wouldn't get a pink mixer, someone else may, but I still need a mixer what ever color it is. I wouldn't turn it down if it's pink and gift. I hope this helps someone else to get and use a cane.Thanks Sam another great one.

    So I'm significantly vision impaired (about 20/200 visual acuity with tunnel vision in my left eye, about 20/150 with somewhat less severe tunnel vision in my right eye, with pretty severe night blindness), but no one knows why. And because they don't know why, they don't know how to help, so I've never had a cane.
    But at the same time I can never go anywhere at night because even in my own neighbourhood I will fall down flat on the ground at every other curb or bump because I just can't see them. And even in full daylight if two things are similar enough in colour I tend to not see bumps or steps and I stumble over things constantly because I can't see them and others can.
    This one time we went to the cinema for my sister's birthday and it was in a building I'd never been to before. And it was nighttime when the film ended, and even though all the lights were fully on I couldn't see the stairs anymore. (Not that I'd really been able to see them going in, but we were going up then and I've found that that's easier). There was nothing special about them either, just regular wooden stairs and one set of stairs with simple black carpet. And my dad had to guide me down all of them.
    I really think I could benefit from a cane in some situations, cut I don't know how to bring it up with a doctor to discuss it because I don't have a diagnosis. And I don't know how to get one or what kind I need or how to use it. What do you think I should do?

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually the rule is that if there are any situations, even one, where you think a cane will help you, then you are definitely ready for one. You can definitely speak to your doctor about this, however, you aren’t required to. You don’t need a doctors permission to get a cane. I’m not sure where you live but there are lots of online stores that sell canes for pretty reasonable prices. Amazon for example has lots of options. If you’re here in the US, the national Federation of the blind will give you a free cane. You can apply for one on their website. Once you have your cane, I would recommend looking into getting some training on how to properly use it. There are lots of ways to use a cane but if you learn the proper technique, you will be more efficient and safe.

    • @EsmeeAnnamarie
      @EsmeeAnnamarie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theblindlife Tanks for the reply! I live in the Netherlands, so I'll have to look up how to get one and how and where to get training with it here. I definitely will need training before I start using it because I'm clumsy and I'm scared I'm gonna hit people's legs with it, and I don't know how to use the feedback I get from it of how to move it around. I'm not even sure it will help me, I just think maybe it can sometimes.
      I also struggle with feelings of insecurity about it, especially because I don't have a diagnosis, and I don't know if I should, even if I think it could help. But I'll definitely look into it. Thank you!

    Thanks for the pep talk. I was crying from that so maybe I'll check out Casey's video after a bit of rest. I'm also dealing with my senses changing, light smell and especially hearing. I understand echolocation now and it's all from it happening to me and just getting through it. I am doing my best to see the docs again. They never find anything wrong so we're not sure where to look, now. I hope everything is good now!

      Extending is super easy! Sometimes I even just whip the cane down and it flies right out! collapsing it however can sometimes be frustrating. the smallest section, the red one, can be pretty tight. Usually if I twist it it will pop loose.

      Mine did last longer than that but unfortunately not as long as I would have liked. LOL. I was closing the cane one day and, not meaning to, apparently bent it and broke one of the shops. • @bluetech7753

      The suicide journa,l I had the same similar situation with telescoping canes so I went with a folding cane I'm new to the cane only been using it a few months just like Sam in the video I don't need it all the time I only need it for identification and four steps and curves and some minimal use night and using it without formal training because I don't think I need that right now since I don't have to depend on it so much. The reason for identification is because I have a very narrow visual field and I don't see people all the way around me I bump into them this means small children knocking them over or sometimes just lifting my hand I might unintentionally slap somebody so the cane is just to let people around me know that I don't see very well it's been working good so far I got a folding cane cuz yeah the telescoping hanging was not working out for me.

      My telescopic came broke if that tells you anything! After having used one for a while, I actually don’t really recommend them anymore. They are flimsy, tend to break, and while using them.

      Just to give you an update, that telescopic cane actually broke on me. I went to close it up and it got caught in bent. Also, the more I used it the more it it was frustrating how it would constantly collapse on itself as I was walking. Hadn’t used it enough to realize that when I made the video

    Hi Sam, I use a folding Ambutech cane and I also use the electronic cane you mentioned. It is called the UltraCane. I would really like to hear your opinion of the device. If you are interested in doing a review, contact Sound Foresight who make the cane. their website is ultracane.com. If you have trouble getting hold of them or you are unable to find a distributor in the US, let me know and I will contact Julie Davis from Sound Foresight who should be able to help.

    Is there an actual locking mechanism that prevents the came from collapsing or is it just friction that holds it into its extended length? Thank you.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just friction. If you extend the cane and don’t give it a good twist, sometimes the cane will collapse on itself while you’re using it. It’s pretty annoying!

    Hi Sam! Great TH-cam channel! Do you still recommend this telescoping cane? There doesn't seem to be a big selection of these types of canes out there.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jeff Walther without the cane work pretty well for me however it collapses on itself a lot. You’ll be walking along and the cane will just collapse. Also I recently got became jammed when I try to close it and the manufacturer replace it. They said they’ll fix it for a charge. I think I’m going to look for a different cane instead of getting this one fixed.

    After watching Casey's video (found her channel first) I got a telescopic cane from ila. Not at cool looking at your "Light Saber" but it does the trick. I have only had my cane for a few weeks. I am self teaching. I only have it for use like you said in this video, unfamiliar places, curbs/stairs, night. I am a little apprehensive with only using it sometimes as I am always with a sighted person and they might not understand that it is ok to only use a cane sometimes instead of all the time. Another thing I am unsure about is using the constant contact technique on pavement (curb cuts/drains are a big problem for me) is there a rolling tip instead of a stationary sliding tip I can get? Any advice would be appreciated.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +rebel1701 rest of shirt that we all feel uneasy about using the cane. Think of it as a teaching moment, you can help change the opinions of the sighted people around you. Show them that not only totally blind people use canes. There are rolling tips available, sometimes they’re called Marshmello tips. They roll side to side.

    • @muleman1701
      @muleman1701 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Blind Life thanks. I got my ila cane off Amazon. They had the tips, just did not know which one to get. As for my sighted friends/family they are set in their ways and changes like me using a cane is difficult for them. Especially since I can do other things sight impaired people usually can't.

    Do they make a cane that will help with a 6 foot and taller person

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you just have to get your measurements. Hermes a general rule about cane length. A guide cane is traditionally the length from the floor to your waist. However if you have particularly short arms you might benefit from a longer cane - and a shorter cane if your arms are long.
      A long cane traditionally extends from floor to sternum or underarm, although sometimes people use even longer length canes.

    I just ordered mine from Ambutech. I ordered the telescopic cane from the nfb a couple years ago but I didn't really like it because of how it was designed there was no grip and it felt cheap. I would like to know your opinion about if you still like your cane after having it for several months. Please let me know it would be much appreciated.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately my cane broke and when I asked if they would replace it they declined and said I would have to pay $30 to get it fixed. That’s less than $20 less than I paid so I’m just going with a different company next time.

    Hey Sam A.CHAL I am in the mood to get my first cane, I thought this one should be perfect
    But with the reviews it seems it collapses a lot, which Kane are using now
    And of course what type of tip in the bottom is the most recommended for people like us that use the cane once in a while
    Any update will be much appreciated

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are use thin folding cans which are commonly referred to as guide canes. These are canes that are longer than ID canes but still not as heavy duty and robust as navigation canes. Are use one from NFB which is fiberglass. It has seven segments and is about 9 inches long when folded down. It’s great for traveling and throwing in a back pocket or coat pocket. I also use a slim cane from ambutech. It is seven segments and folds down to about 10 inches. These types of canes are great because they are lightweight and much more portable than the bulky navigation canes.

      The Blind Spot question does it collapse on its self when you are using it? Like when you contact a crack in the pavement walking or something…?

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you fail to pull it out firmly when you extend it it could collapse in on itself. If you need a cane for more traditional navigation, this style my not be the right choice.
