OUTSTANDING and comprehensive review!!! Firsthand knowledge coupled with practical firsthand experience in riding several of these machines. I will say that I was a tad surprised by your top three choices, in that, Triumph 900 didn't make the cut after your glowing review of the Tiger-800. I almost went out and bought a mildly used 2018 Tiger-800 after your reviews of that bike with ZERO discussion with my wife LOL! And, still may!! All kidding aside, I am still waiting to pull the trigger on the 900 Rally. I absolutely love the fact that they're just tractors and do everything rather than do 1 thing exceptionally. Similar to my Honda Rally, they will do everything 'OK' rather than be geared more towards either road/street or off-road. I love my Honda Rally> but am ready for a mid-sized ADV bike and the Tiger-900 Rally seems to be calling my name. THANKS FOR THE REVIEW!!
Mr. Goon, all you covered was spot on. One more thing, BMW has had real problems with there engines. Rocker arms and cam chains. I removed them from my list due to that. I went KTM adv.
Greetings! I have been considering the KTM 890 Adventure R with the Tech pack. The suspension and balance is the primary reason. The 2018 Triumph Tiger 800xcx that I have is a wonderful machine, but as you know, it's top heavy and the rear suspension is under sprung. I weigh 210 lbs and with the compression set at max my sag is still out of limits. Two panniers and a dry bag makes this bike a wheely monster. I am contemplating the Tourtech Adventure rear shock and the Touratech progressive front end for the Tiger, but I'm leaning more towards the 890, but then I have to start buying all the accessories to set it up for me. It never ends. I need to go to motorcycle aholics. I'm obsessed with anything on 2 wheels.
Aprilia Tuareg 660 here. I’ve ridden most of the bikes on your list (excluding the Norden and Duc DesertX). You’re right to be curious about the Tuareg, it’s a very very fun bike that begs you to push it harder. For me the Tenere 700’s suspension was a total let down. The KTM890 has a very capable suspension and more power but I find the Tuaregs power more usable and its suspension to be excellently suited for 99% of the non-pro riders I know. The CG is low, like the 890, and it has very light and playful feel. The intake note sings an intoxicating song, the suspension loves seeing both tires leave the ground, and the fit/finish is spectacular. It’s both fun to look at and ride. The stock rubber was a big complaint amongst new owners so I had TKC80s put on it before I took delivery. The aftermarket accessories are quickly catching up. It shares a common fueling issue on bikes meeting Euro5 emissions; a lean spot at about 4k rpm, that can cause the bike to flinch while cruising. This issue should be remedied by a tuner, and I’ll be able to verify that within 48hrs when my UP-MAP tuner arrives. Get your hands on one and give it the beans!
I've had my Tuareg for a couple weeks now and a few hundred miles and it's a hoot. My first adventure bike so I have no real gauge of others but I like it and it's got plenty of power.
Add weight to the rear of the Tiger ( luggage for travelling) and it is a more balanced unit. Isn't that what an ADV bike is for? Dirt road cruising on a Tiger is good. I used my 800 XCx off road once and while it managed fine, it was hard work for me.
@@BornAGoon I think " off road" should mean single track, and if that was correct , sure more weight anywhere on the bike is detrimental to its handling. Touring on sandy roads ( 4-6 inches deep) , with luggage on the rear, my Tiger was very easy to control in comparison to my riding mates' F800 GS. They were too light on the front end and very twitchy ( both fitted with steering dampers).
I just bought a 850 gsa, the reason is that a used 2019 have basically the same as a 2022 triumph tiger 900 rally pro with a bit less height and its way cheaper.
I'm holding out hope that the Honda Transalp comes through next month and floods the market. Originally I wanted the Tenere-700 but as we all know, they're scarce. So I moved my interest to the Aprilia Tuareg. Had one available to me but then the news of the Transalp dropped and I couldn't bring myself to buy the Aprilia. I'm now counting down the days until the unveiling of the new Transalp. That's the bike I want in the midsized category.
@@cliffordjordan9577 haha!! All depends on what you're wanting to do but in general, yea... Honda dropped the ball simply so it wouldn't overshadow the AT from what I've gathered. I ended up having a new 2022 T7 available to me a few weeks before the Transalp unveiling actually. It was a bitter sweet moment. My all round dream bikes are the T7 and AT. So basically, it makes no sense for me to swap the T7 out for the TA unless I end up favoring on road traveling over offroad. And even then, the AT is still on my list to bag once I get some experience under my belt. I'm totally new to riding in general... I stopped myself from getting an AT while I was ahead and instead learn on the T7 lol. Some might say it's still too large of a bike to "learn" on but I feel with T7, that's completely subjective.
I am sure that when you test the Tuareg, you are going to put it first on your list, leaving the 890 Rally in second place, which for its part will continue to be the most capable in sporting capabilities, however the Aprilia, without moving too far away in sensations, will it can offer better features in comfort, ergonomics, stability and aerodynamics on the road, and I dare say that also a greater compromise in durability and reliability. This is my opinion without having tried either of them, but understanding, as you do, the observations made by the amateur and professional public about both bikes. By the way, great review from you. Thanks!
if I could own only one.. husky 701 with rally tower. but for now, pretty happy with scrambled Svartpilen 401 and Norden 901 (that has it's own issues to be honest, but still a supreme tourer to anything on the list mentioned).
Nice job and can’t argue too much. Although since I already own a Husky te300i I’d go with the Norden 901 /KTM 890, and agree the Ducati is exciting so while I’m dreaming I’ll take it please and thank you. 🏍💨
@@BornAGoon even in stock form (not for long tho) before any re-spring or revalve or even also needed ergo changes , coming off a well set up 1090r this platform by seat of the pants feels like half the size and weight , i cant wait for all the parts ive already ordered to come and more aftermarket to be out for it , after its properly set up it should be magical
Add seat too wide KTM 790/890. Can’t make it thinner because of the width of the frame in the seat area. I’ve had one now for 13,000 miles. I’ve had no issues at all with mine.
I waited cash-in-hand for the Transalp, and shouldn't have bothered! It was so underwhelming that I was disappointed. The Tuareg seems to be the best fit in terms of off-road ability, on-road manners, fitment and value-for-money. It outshines the T7 on the road and smashes the Transalp off it. Considering it is thousands cheaper than the Triumph, Ducati and BMW and can do all they can do just as well, it is the best value proposition in my view. Plus, they look nice! Well done Aprilia!
My favorite would be the Norden 901 with the suspension from 890 R and the headlight/windshield and rear from the Desert X, or if they just take the aesthetics from the old 950 on the chassie of the 890 R. But atm I think the the Desert X and T7 looks best and the 890 R ride the best. But for now I will stick with my 1090 R, it´s a beast on gravel :)
I like the aprillia but there are very few dealerships in the US it is actually easier to buy a tenere than an aprillia and the blue on is 500 more than the other colors the aprillia starts at 11299msrp
Here in the Southwest US dealers have a lot of Tuaregs sitting around and already cutting price I got a quote for 13500 OTD Either Aprilia made too many or nobody is buying
@@BornAGoon that's the thing. They maybe plentiful where you're at, but no where else. I just got to see one in Houston yesterday and it was the only dealership within 400 miles of me to get one recently. They wouldn't take less than $15k out the door because they knew no one else has any around. ☹️
I left those out because they are more of a big dual sport than an adventure bike, but on second thought, I should have listed them because I switched from an adv bike to a smaller dual-sport a fitted it for adventure. I think the 701 is the best multi-purpose bike made
So underrated review - someone that can actually ride and still give critical comprehensive report. Well done Goon!
