Jordan, you did a great job matching the color to the anamorphic style. The overall color and the skin tone were simply perfect for the style (for my taste). Really pleasing to watch.
i hope we get more experimental shot videos like these, maybe shot on some vintage lenses, maybe a 4:3 aspect ratio or in black and white, great review as always
Glad to see a new 70-200mm GM in the lineup. I dropped the 24-70mm GM and 70-200mm GM from my kit years ago because they were so big and heavy. Hopefully a new 24-70mm GM will be coming soon.
@@BoyarsMedia I replaced them with the 24-105mm G and 70-200mm f4 G. Both excellent lenses. Lighter, but a bit slower. I no longer have either of those lenses, although I'd recommend both for home and travel. For zooms I currently have a 16-35mm GM and 100-400mm GM which covers that range. I also have the 50mm GM and 85mm GM if needed, but I rarely use them, since I mainly do landscape photography. One of my favorite lenses is the 135mm GM which I also use in crop mode or on my a6600 which makes it a 200mm lens.
The mk1 is hardly a bad lens, it's heavier with a tiny bit of corner softness wide open but will still be an excellent fast focusing, sharp where it's needed, work horse for those that use it professionally for weddings and events
Thank you for testing C-AF during rack zoom. This has historically been a major weaknessof mirrorless compared to DSLRs, maybe the only remaining one, but most of the DPReview review staff has completely ignored it.
I have a sony a7 III and a panasonic S1R, I hesitate to buy a Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens or a panasonic S 70-200 F 2.8, it is to take sports photos in night with correct lighting. Thank you
Please shoot all your autumn videos like this going forward. Sure, it distracts from the reviews, but I only consider buying 1% of the things you guys review.
I may be at a minority here, but I found the discrepancy between horizontal and vertical resolution quite jarring (talking about the anamorphic lens here, not the Sony). And the anamorphic squeeze seemed to vary between shots. I guess it is cinematic look, but it also gave it some sort of surveillance camera feel.
Based on everything I've seen, this looks like one of the best e-mount lenses to come out in a while. I would love to see Sony knock 30% of the weight off their 24-70 for the next generation. It would be great if they started to price more competitively against other manufacturers. Especially with the 24-70 being double the price of Sigma's version, Sony could really come out strong with their new lenses dropping 30% in price as well as weight. Otherwise most of us will just be waiting for updates from Sigma and Tamron!
I started with the a7r2, and bought both the 24-70 GM and 70-200 GM. Then upgraded to the a7r4 when it came out. And to be honest, the 24-70 GM and 70-200 GM were good lenses, not great lenses, when they came out. And after a few years, they are not really good enough. Why do I say that? It's because their counterparts were arguably better from other systems when those lenses came out. And, in recent years, the advances by Sigma and Tamron have come very far for the FE mount. Adding to that, the lenses for Nikon's and Canon's mirrorless lineup really puts the original GMs to shame. And, semantically, good enough for a flagship lens is basically saying it sucks. A flagship lens needs to be great, not good, and definitely not good enough.
The lens hood looks absolutely identical to the RF 70-200. LOL It’s remarkable that 5 years ago the biggest complaint was “Sony didn’t have the lenses” and now they have so many that Sony is making Mark II versions of its older glass.
More the other way around, to be honest. The Sony 70-200 f/4 G's lens hood is also very similar, although without the filter adjustment hatch, and it came out clear back in 2014. Minolta had the door on 2003's A-mount 70-200mm F2.8 APO G D SSM hood.
@@ziginox actually, the other OTHER way around. Charles Chevalier invented the camera lens in the early 1800’s… haha That’s how ridiculous you sound when I read that Minolta put a door on a lens hood back in 2003 so Canon actually copied THEIR design…instead of the fact that Sony’s new 70-200 f/2.8 has a lens hood design that looks exactly like the lens hood from the Canon RF 70-200 f/2.8 from a couple years ago - that’s all I said. It wasn’t a history lesson.
I agree that Jordan did a great job with video on this review. I am not a SONY shooter but watch these because of the entertainment value and tips that are common with all image capture. Again great job Jordan.
I still think for a lot of people a 70-200 f/4 is a better bet - much lighter and cheaper, and are generally very good wide-open. (Okay, I have a 70-200 f/2.8, but it's not something you throw in your bag just-in-case it might be handy...)
The desqueeze seems to have caused some mishap. In some shots Chris looks way to compressed (too thin) and others looks normal. I dont know what went wrong or if the Vazen lenses uses different aspect ratios and have been desqueezed the same. Something is not right. Fx the walking shot @3:05 vs @7:28. Something is not right.
I swear every review that I saw about the old Sony 70-200 was nothing but praise. Seemed like everyone would call it the best 70-200 on the market and now that the version II is out everyone saying the og was lackluster ??? Fake fans Fr
In this video I hear about it for the first time. I and many others are very happy with the 24-70mm. Sure it's a bit heavy, but very reliable. I'm not giving it back anytime soon.
nervous background mentioned briefly, but i think this is critical, and in this case a deal breaker. may everything else be perfect, but that one characteristic i what i buy such a lens for. otherwise i could go with a cheaper and lighter f/4.
I absolutely would love this fast aperture for helicopterspotting, but for that, 200mm is quite short imho. My Sony SEL 55-210 mm (yes, I know it is APS-C) is 315mm equivalent and even that is too short to get great photos of helicopters...
You know I was wondering if they were gonna come out with a version two of this lens but I went and picked up the tamron 70-180 and I don’t even touch it anymore ever since I picked up the Sony 135 mm GM. I used to like to use a 70-200 and use it at 200 mm for the compression and taking distracting things out of the photo but the 135 mm GM is on my camera 90% of the time. This lanes would have to be super bad ass for me to even consider it. It would have to be better than the 135 mm
THanks guys for the review! What really annoys me about the lens is that the tripod collar is not fully removable. It would be so much lighter and easier to handle without the stuff sticked to the lens :(
This is now on my 'selling a kidney' list! Anyway, my 24-70 is a superb lens -- very slight CA on the wide end at 2.8, but the only thing that would really persuade me would be internal zoom. An update to the noisy 85mm would be better in my opinion -- but, as I don't do video, even that's a non-issue. :D
Lets be honest here Jordan deserves a raise for this cinematic look and feel.
Totally agree!
I agree, I was more interested in the anamorphic lens than the Sony one! Oops...
Good to test new things, but anamorphic bokeh is hideous.

My goodness this video is gorgeous, the cinematography of it is incredible. Well done guys, lovely review as always too!
Lovely, but I wish it was a little more affordable :)
People keep talking about Jordan's cinematic look and feel but I think he truly shines in his downhill sprinting. The man can do anything!!
This is probably the best cinematic episode with the anamorphic lens used. This looks incredible.
nope. Blackbars.
Blackbars worth it, because they introduce them after the intro. They're telling a story.
The anamorphic lens looked awesome. Sony did a nice job in marking 200mm sharper than 70mm. That’s usually not the case
lol you guys really stole the 70-200's thunder by shooting this episode beautifully with some anamorphic lenses.
indeed! :)
LOVED THE MASTERFUL SHOOT WITH THE ANAMORPHIC AND GH5 ON THIS EPISODE, JORDAN!! Excellent job :D!!
I know it shouldn’t happen but Chris’ face is “long” in some shots…
That's due to the characteristics of anamorphic - it varies from different anamorphic systems on the level it squeezes the face
@@MoronMonkeyPro I knew it could affect the light, background but not the subject to that point. This really made Chris look weird and less dreamy lol
That lens i think has a 1.8x squeeze, the video looks like is was only desqueezed by 1.6x or something like that
@mipmipmipmipmip I need all the dreams I can get! Fix it quick!
I had to pause the video to find this comment. It doesn’t look right to me.
Wow, if Chris was worried about nervous bokeh, good thing he didn't turn around!
I used the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II this week on a gig; it's a fantastic lens!

Most impressive thing is that GH5 still looks great!
Man, do I love the bokeh from that anamorphic lens in those lake shots. Gorgeous.
Even if it's the same in terms of sharpness and AF speed/accuracy, the fact it went from 1,4 kg to 1 kg makes it a worthy upgrade.
Fitting that you guys reviewed the sharpest zoom lens using the creamiest lens ever
Watch again! The old Sony was fourth in sharpness, behind Nikon, Canon and Panasonic. Chris only said this was sharper than the old Sony zoom!
