It's understandable that many view glass from an economy perspective; there are comparable lenses with comparable sharpness. And a premium price tag like this deters many from investing in a product like this. However, if you love the hobby and want to invest in the gear, why not? I'm not a professional musician, and I don't make any money from my guitar playing.. yet I've invested in the highest quality instruments over time. Simply because it's pleasing to me, and I have a huge appreciation for craftsmanship. I will likely never make a dime from photography; but this lens is on my purchase list when I'm able to do so.
So I've owned this lens for a little over a year now and typically use it with my Alpha 1 and it is hands down my favorite lens in my kit. I think it's a tie in versatility with the 24-70mm when it comes to photo's and is equally as good in video! If you have the budget and are in the market for a 70-200 this is definitely the lens you want to get! If you don't have the budget then save up for this because it's worth it!
I've had this since Christmas and it's my favorite by a mile. I like my 24-70gm2 but I don't love it like the 70-200gm2. Something that not many people mention is the weight. It's 1045g. The original 70-200gm weighs 1480grams! Better image and shaving off almost 30% of the weight from the original is amazing. It's really a joy to shoot with. In my bag I always carry the 24-70gm2, 70-200gm2, 200-600G, and the 2x teleconverter (compatible with the 70-200 and 200-600. The Teleconverter is great for birding and taking photos of the moon but pretty much useless for most anything else).
Thanks, nice vid. I‘d say that for most people, the Sony 70-200 F4 G lense is a nice way cheaper alternative to the GM. If you don‘t need the open aperture of 2.8 in a zoom lense.
@Peter Lindgren the fact that @johnd9357 made this comment and you didn’t even react to it proves this channel is just rubbish. It’s top notch content and you didn’t even comment on it 👎🏻
This is an amazing lens! I use it with a 2 X TC for bird and wildlife photography with results comparable to 100-400 5.6. The three customisable buttons on the lens basically works for only one function, not separate functions for each button the way you mentioned. Please correct me if I wrong. Overall informative video 👍
This lens is an absolute beauty! Pair this up with a 2x teleconverter and it offers pretty comparable results to the 100-400mm. Essentially you get two GM lenses in one; a perfect hybrid for telephoto landscapes and portraits.
Love it… use it for sport mainly soccer in low light (indoor and outdoor) with a6400… it is fantastic… did use Tamron 70-180mm 2.8 but it had hard time focusing in tracking mode with fast action and some noise from motors and more failed photos… have not used the 70-200 jet for video as I don’t have a videocamera… but the 70-200mm ii is worth every penny even though I am not getting paid for my photos. I am a filmmaker but photogarphy is my hobby.
I mean, I think you are wrong, is the lens expensive? Yes, but I dont think you MUST be making money on your photography to want to have access to the capabilities this kind of equipment offers... Some of us really just want to take amazing photos.... for fun.... and we have really deep pockets. I was super into photography 15 years ago, I got out of it, however, one of the best purchases I made was my Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS L, the OG version, from back when that was really the only thing anyone wanted, and it cost about the same as this lens does today... now I am switching to sony, Im planning on going balls to the wall and buying a bunch of stuff, probably an A7RV and this along with a few other high end lenses.
I am in love with this lens. Took it off my camera maybe twice since I got it at release. Don’t really need it honestly, but man it’s a satisfying purchase for me. Also great video peter, as always. 👌
Just ordered this, super excited. Had my A7 R IV for about a year and it came with the 2.8 24-70 GM which is amazing but I feel this new one will take things to a whole other level.
I'm rocking the version 1 of this lens for a few years now. Don't use it often enough to justify "upgrading" to the new one, but I do love using mine when It's needed. I really have no complaints...it's great.
Absolutely love your channel man, been supporting it from the start. I really hope it becomes one of the best camera channels on TH-cam! Would love to see you do more collaborations with TH-camrs, in the states. Like a potato jet, especially Casey from camera, conspiracies in Canada.
I didn’t “need” this lens, but I bought it to take pics at my son’s high school basketball games. It’s more than what I need since I’m a beginner and still learning. But it’s been fun and I was fortunate to find an open box deal.
I was actually looking to buy the 100-400GM for a trip to Yellowstone this summer with possibly the Tc 1.4x. But the 70-200GMII can be used with the TC2x and is significantly lighter than the 100-400mm. Can also be used as a portrait lens without the TC attached (a portrait lens is also in my buy list) so quite versatile. The «only » issue is the price. The TC is not cheap either….
hi, sounds like you have a table (or ceiling) reflection comb filtering issue with your voice, i recommend checking polar pattern for your microphone and making sure it catches the least amount of reflected sound possible (compared to your voice)
This is a fantastic lens! Just got one from Sony to borrow for a week as I haven't added it to my kit yet. The image quality from this lens is mind blowing.
Such valuable info as always @Peter Lindgren, thank you! I bought a used f4 about a month ago and so happy with it. Of course the f2.8 would be great, but I think you're correct in saying if the lens is not going to pay for itself then I don't need it... I still want it though lol 😂
Who is this Manuel that you’re talking about the whole time - he seems to be very much into this whole focus stuff 😜 Thx for the review/explainer vid! Very informative! Ordered!
Kyle loved that lens when he was in New York he rented it. Said it was amazing for street photography and super fast. I would love to have the business funds to buy it, but just don’t right now. Great video as always!
Great review peter , i agree with it and was thinking of buying one, so rented one and found out how awesome it is, tack sharp is an accurate description, it worked great for me in all conditions including night photography at -33 celsius no problems at all and using my Sony A7 iv ,i was really surprised at how great the pics turned out at 33mps , they looked even better, thats just my opinion, the low light shooting was nuts clear almost to each corner and I am just a hack hobbyist doing this for myself, the price here in Canada with local taxes for me would be $3954.00 Canadian, my provincial tx is 8% and GST is 5% , so for now i will look for an old Minolta 80-200 f2.8 AF which is awesome to in its own right, I have the LE-EA5 adapter that i needed to get to use my A-Mounts lenses from my older Sony Cameras, if i was to make money from my hobby, its no longer my passion, it becomes my job and i already have a full time one of those, great video 👍
What camera and lens would you recommend a beginner who happens to make some money with videos?🙂 I can comfortably spend around $2000 or a bit more if I find it worthwhile.
I agree so much in pretty much all you say here. I have solely used this lens professionally. But DAMN it's good!!! Sneaking in on construction workers on a building site for instance is a great. The blurred out background is amazing. The zoom ring is amazing and can be operated by one finger. But, hefty price for professional work :)
I own the Mki which I feel is highly underrated, yes very heavy but when shooting sport using a monopod its not an issue. Just got my hands on a demo Mk2 so will be interested to see if it is that much sharper and quicker AF than the Mk1.
Nice review. It really annoys me that the tripod colla is not fully removable. It would be so much lighter and easier to handle without the stuff sticked to the lens :(
I used to love shooting at 200 mm for portrait. I just love the compression. But when I switched over to Sony, I picked up the Tamron 70-180 f2.8 and used it a bunch until I bought the Sony 135 mm GM. And now my 70-180 just sits in my dry cabinet. I barely ever use it. That 135 mm GM is so flipping sharp and produces such beautiful photos. I worry that the new Sony 70-200 f2.8 GM II Would sit also. I’m trying to sell my 70-180 to possibly buy the new 70-200. But lately I have been taking a lot of action sports motocross racing and ATV racing photos and I use my 135 mm for all of it but I hear the new 70-200 has a great hit rate. So I’ve been debating. I know I’d make the money back in less than a month, but I don’t know I got enough lenses that sit that I don’t touch.
@abracadabra7196 that's for sure. I did pick up the new Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG DN and this last session I did for senior pictures I switched over to the 135 mm and I said to the young lady hold on a second. This lens don't Zoom I am the one that makes it Zoom so I have to move back a little. But the photos it produces his top-notch still to date
The Sony 70-200 GMii is my favourite lens bar none. I use it for everything from product photography to travel to portraits to wildlife photography. With added 2x teleconverter even works for bird photography. If I can only take one lens, then this is it.
I remember using the Canon 70-200 2.8 on my first wedding..pretty nervous, but the lens was a life-saver. On the fence right now for the sony version..as it is versatile, more so than the 135 I owned. But the question is, will it be that much used? Somewhat as I do weddings..might get it while waiting for the Sony 85 1.2. Owning the 50 1.2 gm so I am good as prime concerns. Still thinking, it IS expensive. Great review Peter. :)
thank you for the great review. I am a street photographer and im used to using fixed prime lenses. Im wondering if its worth getting because im tired of switching out lenses or missing shots. This review really helps.
Damn that thing is expensive 😅 Great video Peter and agree with you statement about the price. For any beginner out there like me, if you don’t know, if you like the 70-200 focal range, try out a vintage 70-200 like the Canon FD 70-210 F4. It cost around 30-40$ and you can play around, if you enjoy that focal length. An interesting alternative would be the Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8, if you prefer the wider end more then the telephoto.
My zoom ring has a tiny bit of slop on my example. Less than 1mm of slop, but it’s there and it’s annoying for a 3000 dollar lens. I would send it back, but optically it’s perfect so I don’t want to risk getting a lens that has a better zoom ring, but then isn’t as optically perfect.
Peter hello! What's happening? How is Sweden, I quite like it there. When you coming to Vancouver, CANADA? We need you to here buddy. Interesting you say the A1 & A7siii those two cameras I also own and use (still have the Panasonic GH5, [with two 2.8 lens] hard hard to let go of that one) might get one more to complete my set. ...will wait i think since some serious stuff is coming from Sony. VERY NICE VIDEO YET AGAIN! So what is the best lens if you had to pick one or your top 3 from 3 to 1? That could be an interesting video your top 5 from 5 to 1 or 3 to 1 and explaining why the lens are your current fav. Thanks!
I was just looking at this lens today…got the sigma 24-70mm f2.8 on a A7siii and noticed that Sigma doesn’t have a 70-200mm f2.8 for sony… Do you have any 2x converter you would recommend? I thought a 2x would give me an extra range…but would like your opinion on this topic. Greetings Peter
No I don’t make money taking pics just love going out and taking pics and been away from the camera world for about seven years because had to sale off all my gear from me getting sick but just got the lens and the Sony a7r v like two weeks ago now and love them but haven’t been out enough yet with them hope to here soon
Jag har haft denna superglugg sedan dag ett den kom ut. Njuter trots att jag inte har fotografering som levebröd. Den sitter säkert på min A1:a 60-70 procent av tiden, sååå mångsidig! Bra video.
Thanks, just wanted to know if it has focus breathing and it shows early at 1:43 So there´s no effort from Sony on this issues on such expensive lenses.
Just switched to Sony from my c70. This lens is so expensive!! I film sports so I need a 70-200, but I am going to have to get the old one. There is a hope that I’ll be able to afford this one soon. So, I am trying to research the original 70-200.
I got this last May and used it on marathons and football tournaments omg what an amazing time I had with it. Expensive? Yes but tech and optics justifies it.
Cool video. Looks like an amazing lens. I love my canon 70 - 200mm f2.8 IS III USM. I mainly use it for corporate headshots. Think it might be a comparable lens to yours😀 By the way nice pics of the car.
This is the NEXT level of Picture ... need Full Sizes of RAM, for my sister, she is HUGE fan of this car. Picture from 70-200 is freaking cool. Shots with transformers are blowing mind ... bokeh .... ooouuufff. ... juicy. Do we need this lense? Ofcourse not, it is PRO tool, for PRO photographers. But thanks for the video. And once again, can you upload somewhere full sizes of pics with RAM? They are REAALLY amazing . thank you.
Have a 35 gm and 85 1.8 right now. Thinking about either a 35-150 Tamron as a single lens do it all, or getting a 70-200 pair it with the 35 gm. Might not even have use for 85 unless I'm just taking itself out for street or such, thoughts? Feel like the 35-150 isn't worth unless I sell both the 35 gm and 85.
I've got the 70 200 f4 and I love the lens. I also really want the 2.8 version of course.. but I'll settle for the f4 for now. I love the new tripod mount though, I didn't know they changed that. I wonder if I can buy it for the f4
Tamron 70-180 is amazing, light, sharp, quick autofocus. As bad as I want this lens. 800$ used for Tamron is so much better than 3,000$ for this lens cant justify that price gap! Sadly
Love this lens! Something about the GM 70-200mm ii it’s magical it’s prime like in my opinion. Maybe it’s the focal length in general. I’ve used RF version of this lens and again, magical. I own a GM 35 1.4 and the images I take with it, for some reason, don’t have a pop or sharpness compare to my 70-200 GM ii. Maybe it’s the compression? I don’t know. Happy to hear anyone’s input regarding that. I do have a question. I’m considering buying the 24-70mm GM ii. Is there anyone out there that owns both (70-200 GM ii and 24-70 GM ii) these lenses and can provide any insight on how the image quality/sharpness of the 24-70 compares to the 70-200?.
With all respect, I think the 3 buttons does the same, but they are just placed 3 different places? So if you set up the button to be EyeAF all 3 does that.
I personally think there are people who does photography hobby with deep pockets, such as professionals and dentists, who still find value in this lens even though they dont make money from photography
I recently just bought this lens and have used it just a couple of times but I have to say I'm less than thrilled with the image quality I'm getting from it. I get the beep and the green box on the display of the camera telling me I'm in focus and I also switch to manual focus so I can check the focus peeking and everything looks great. When I import the images into Lightroom and zoom in to 100% every raw image right out of the camera isn't sharp and there's a ton of color noise. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm wondering if I have a bad lens or if it's something I'm doing wrong, I have the 12-24mm f2.8 and all the images from that lens are spot on tack sharp.
@@PeterLindgren1 That's what I'm thinking. The shots I took last night were all at f2.8 so I expect a little softness. Will try at f8 and f11 tonight and see. Will have to contact Sony and have them look at it and fix it or replace it if no go. Just got it a little over a month ago. Disappointing.
Hi did you buy it in the end? I'm looking at pairing it with my A1 for sports, fast moving dogs and portrait work, would you recommend this setup? Thanks
Är lite inne på att byta till Sony, men gruvar mig över förlusten på mitt RF 70-200 F2.8 och behöva köpa ny 70-200, för det är helt klart det bästa objektivet jag äger. 😫
Am wondering, why have you all the camera stuff? You Are a videomaker Peter. Do you need the a1? And all the other camera? I think you need only the siii, and if you sell the 70-200mm ii, and buy a sigma 105mm f1,4 that lens is better and half price, if you sell all the things you dont need you kan build your house👍❤️ all the youtubers that have eqipment like this makes the way Harder for all the peapole that want to start up whit TH-cam our business, thats my apinion about that stuff😊😅 but!! Peter, i love your videos and respect all the job you put in to it ❤️😀👍
The original is complete crap compared to that bad boy. It’s just as sharp as my 135gm and 85dg dn. It’s that good. My 50 1.2 and this have been pretty much all I’ve used lately, all the the other lens have been shelfed unless I need a wide angle. It’s that good. Incredible lens. Just get it already
Hi I am debating if I should get the 135gm or the 70200gm ii, is the 70200 really as sharp as the 135? Also how does the af performance compare? I need rapid af for fast moving dog photography and other sports, I use the A1. I will also be using the lens for portrait work. What camera do you use if you don't mind me asking Thanks in advance :)
@@mrbassett4388 135 is amazing af but 70-200ii is just insane. It’s much more versatile with the zoom, with a moving dog I’d much rather have the zoom that the extra 1.8. No brainer 70-200ii
Shoot people with?!? 🤯😝 I’ve had most versions of Nikons 70-200 2.8 and all lenses of that type no matter brand is amazing. Good reach, handholdable, a lens you can do a lot with. 😍

How's your back?
Thanks, nice vid. I‘d say that for most people, the Sony 70-200 F4 G lense is a nice way cheaper alternative to the GM. If you don‘t need the open aperture of 2.8 in a zoom lense.
The buttons are not individually customizable, just FYI. You program one function and all 3 buttons do that function.
Thanks john. I was wondering that. Good to know!
Oh😮
It is a really good point, and one which I hadn’t realised until after I purchased mu 100-400!
Bruh that makes no sense why would they do that! 🤦♂️

love the background setup so much
thank you for the great review. I am a street photographer and im used to using fixed prime lenses. Im wondering if its worth getting because im tired of switching out lenses or missing shots. This review really helps.
Damn that thing is expensive 😅
Great video Peter and agree with you statement about the price.
Hi Peter! How often do you use it for your video work compared to 50mm 1.2? 🤔
I love it. But i got it for 2399€ from uk.❤ combined with the 20-70 and the 600gm it is my go everywhere travel and wildlife set.😊
600 GM 🤤
Peter, you seem to be an Aputure ring guy? 😉 Fab video, smooth effects and great info!
Love aperture rings for filmmaking!
Hey Peter thanks for your thoughts, have you used the 70-200 with a teleconverter ? I am mainly interested in the video range
SAY HI FROM THAILAND THANKS FOR YOUR CREATIVITY AND SEARING
Thanks!
I was just looking at this lens today…got the sigma 24-70mm f2.8 on a A7siii and noticed that Sigma doesn’t have a 70-200mm f2.8 for sony…
Do you have any 2x converter you would recommend? I thought a 2x would give me an extra range…but would like your opinion on this topic. Greetings Peter
I have the same setup
No I don’t make money taking pics just love going out and taking pics and been away from the camera world for about seven years because had to sale off all my gear from me getting sick but just got the lens and the Sony a7r v like two weeks ago now and love them but haven’t been out enough yet with them hope to here soon
Jag har haft denna superglugg sedan dag ett den kom ut. Njuter trots att jag inte har fotografering som levebröd. Den sitter säkert på min A1:a 60-70 procent av tiden, sååå mångsidig! Bra video.
Or get the older F4 version it cost's almost half of the price and quality is nearly the same! great and clear video
Great video Peter! How does it compare to the tamron in image quality in your opinion?
It’s good! This is obviously better, but they’re close 🤌🏼
Thanks, just wanted to know if it has focus breathing and it shows early at 1:43 So there´s no effort from Sony on this issues on such expensive lenses.
Very good Review 🙂 Thanks
so far my most fav len to use
I love this lens and would buy it again in a heart beat...its an awesome lens! I highly recommend it. 😀👍🏾
Just switched to Sony from my c70. This lens is so expensive!! I film sports so I need a 70-200, but I am going to have to get the old one. There is a hope that I’ll be able to afford this one soon. So, I am trying to research the original 70-200.
Thanks for the vid and information. Good stuff! (By the way, should be 'aperture' @ 4:22, not the brand, 'aputure'...)
Ok, thanks
I got this last May and used it on marathons and football tournaments omg what an amazing time I had with it. Expensive? Yes but tech and optics justifies it.
Great video. Beast of a lens 🔥🔥🔥
Bra review skicka den till mig! :)
Wasn't planning on. Canon af, get it, "af" lol. Good one Peter 👍 stay safe.
What did you end up getting?
Great! Sadly no subtitles so I hardly know what you're talking about😂
I've got the 70 200 f4 and I love the lens. I also really want the 2.8 version of course.. but I'll settle for the f4 for now. I love the new tripod mount though, I didn't know they changed that. I wonder if I can buy it for the f4
Answer is nope it's connected to the lens and can't remove it. Researched it 🥲
Tamron 70-180 is amazing, light, sharp, quick autofocus.
I would stay native and for the first gen of 70-200 gm ..2000 is expensive but still 1200 cheaper then the gen. 2 -70-200 gm
With all respect, I think the 3 buttons does the same, but they are just placed 3 different places? So if you set up the button to be EyeAF all 3 does that.
Yeah someone pointed that out! I thought for sure they’d fixed that!
@@PeterLindgren1 but it would be the most logical thing to have them do 3 different things. Anyway you’re making amazing content. I love your work!
If you have budget I think that Tamron 70-180 is very good alternative to this lens and much cheaper.
Has to be a faulty lens I think 🤔
@@PeterLindgren1 That's what I'm thinking. The shots I took last night were all at f2.8 so I expect a little softness. Will try at f8 and f11 tonight and see. Will have to contact Sony and have them look at it and fix it or replace it if no go. Just got it a little over a month ago. Disappointing.
Hi iam from Indonesia.. and really really I like your videos ... it help me so much ... thx and go
Saved me $1500 (CDN) by getting the sigma 70-200 and don’t regret it.
That’s not how the focus hold buttons work. It is a fantastic lens and a workhorse in my event/sports/landscape kit.
OK. SOLD!
Jävla kung du är! Have to sub to yiur channel!!!
Buying this lens very soon… attach it to my A1 for soccer and dogs :)
Hi did you buy it in the end? I'm looking at pairing it with my A1 for sports, fast moving dogs and portrait work, would you recommend this setup? Thanks
@@mrbassett4388 absolutely… I can send you some dog and soccer sample images if you like… brilliant lens with a brilliant camera!
@@4scottishdogs Thank you! Yes please, If you could that would be fantastic! :)
Är lite inne på att byta till Sony, men gruvar mig över förlusten på mitt RF 70-200 F2.8 och behöva köpa ny 70-200, för det är helt klart det bästa objektivet jag äger. 😫
Canon fd 200mm f2.8 - 80$ Please compare👍
Is shoot photos and videos of my Newfoundland dogs with this lens and an A1. Never made a dollar from photography or video.
I know you're a Sony guy but you said you want to make this the best "camera" channel. Will you talk about other brands?
Maybe!
Canon guy is pleased with this answer. Haha. Love your channel.
I have the Nikon Z one and actually, my fav lense. One of the most powerful lenses are the 70-200 f2.8.
Way better than the Canon. The Canon has terrible focus breathing.
Peter, i love your videos and respect all the job you put in to it ❤️😀👍
I am a video maker, and I need a second camera that can also take photos 🤷🏻. Lens choices makes it easier to make videos.
Beautiful piece of sony glass.
The zoom ring is backward.
You get what you pay for ;) Bought it already! ;)
What camera do you use if you don't mind me asking
Thanks in advance :)
@@mrbassett4388 135 is amazing af but 70-200ii is just insane. It’s much more versatile with the zoom, with a moving dog I’d much rather have the zoom that the extra 1.8. No brainer 70-200ii
@@Mattrossphoto Thank you, very much appreciated!
Can you do a little more comprehensive review. You move through things too fast. Things I don’t know. I have this lens. Had the 1st one too.
Shoot people with?!? 🤯😝 I’ve had most versions of Nikons 70-200 2.8 and all lenses of that type no matter brand is amazing. Good reach, handholdable, a lens you can do a lot with. 😍
Unless... you have money. If so just f buy it!!! I will.
Sir suprb 👌👍 sir I am big fen your videos ❤☺
