“The sword is soft, the fire of the furnace, it hungers to be hit and have a 100 sisters in the coldest state of their existence, they mad dance the maddest in the morass of the red rain” …Jesus that’s the most bad ass way to describe making a sword ever.

I discovered Heilung by chance over a year ago on TH-cam... I found the Castlefest show... I immediately stopped what I was doing. I immediately recognized that this wasn't a "show" - this was a "Ritual". I was absolutely mesmerized & watched the entire hour long show right then & there. I cried. Nothing has moved me like that in my entire life.

Their music just does something to people. Like DNA that's been dormant for a few thousand years is suddenly activating. It's a visceral response for sure.

Thats funny because the guy with no costume comes from a shamanic heritage and he is conducting a ritual, the whole 1 hour+ performance is a ritual. From what Ive gathered is that his family wasnt never christainized and kept a lot of old information about the "old ways."

  • @gtdriver2416

The spoken middle part is the "galdr" part of the song, which is supposed to sound like a crow. So the throat singing fits perfectly.

That was their first live performance. It was outside. All that mist came down from the mountains. Provided by the gods, not a smoke machine. One of the most magical experiences one could have. Wish I was there....

It's actually older than Old Norse. What she sings comes from a Germanic text predating the Viking age by a few centuries. It is basically the pacified version of a war-chant.

The metallic clang is Christophers recording from the beginning of the video. It's a sword that's a replica of a sword find from the viking age. In this song, he records all sounds, loops them and orchestrates the entire song structure.

This concert is so beast, and it was their first live performance. In Maidjan, Alfadhirhaiti, fylgija ear / futhorck, and hamrer hippyer are all musts. Elivagar is my favorite piece by this group but it's not live and it's more...of an experience than it is a song.

The metallic clanging is coming from the guy in the back right with the badger on his head. No one who has done a reaction or commented on it sure what it is he's playing back there when he's not on the central big drum. It seems to be almost like a big xylophone with triangles and bits of metal suspended above it in the shots of it we see throughout the concert.

    Now this is something different...
Its a spiritual experience for sure, but i have to say that when Maria starts singing i get the feeling of i guess nostalgia or sorrow.. not sure how to explain it better... maybe this song brings some yearning of the past times, i am not sure.
All in all a powerful experience.

The old Danish lyrics say the following:
    The home fades.
Vil launched a deadly horde upon them.
The oars and mast were destroyed.
    Who brought?
Who brought the horde to this distant land?
The fishes of the streams of Firnoy.
    They swim adrift.
From the land of bright meadows.
    Who brought?
Who brought the horde to this distant land?
I am glad that you give this extremely exceptional Nordic group a chance. I tell you a little about its history. The group, which are two boys and one girl, have Norwegian, Danish and German nationality and uses instruments such as horns of different animals, drums, human bones, rattles with human ashes, bells, stones, all to go back to the first musical compositions that They were able to interpret 1,000 years ago, in the iron age in northern Europe. All the letters are taken from carved gadgets from the era of the Nordic iron, such as arrowheads, bows, swords, rune stones and recite poems and psalms of war, peace and protection. Whereupon and for this, heilung, which means healing in German, is in close collaboration with archaeologists specializing in the field. The languages used by heilung are several. Among them are Latin, Old Danish, German and English. They were so successful with their first album that they had to release a new live album, which includes 2 new songs. Also a video of that album live and in 2019 they released their second work, futha, which is a much more feminine work. His first album, Ofnir, is much more aggressive and masculine. During the concerts some representations of how these ancient rituals of the iron age could be made. Also just finished the soundtrack of the video game Hellblade 2. I hope this review helps you to understand a bit the context of this musical group.
Some curiosities. When they built the drums for the group, one of which is made from horse skin, a doctor drew blood from the three members of the group and painted the drums and some of their clothes with it. The male singer with the deep voice is a great tattoo artist and very professional. The bones the girl plays with are human bones and sometimes they have had problems in the countries of the tour to introduce them through the border from the country where the concert was held.
    A hug.

You definitely need to react to "In Maidjan", too! "Norupo" is also a great one that's more "lyrical" and has a very beautiful official music video.

You should also give Alfadhirhaiti or In Maidjan out from the same concert. Heilung is amazing. More a ritual than a performance.

Copy pasted from a different vid but it is still relevant.
This song is based on the Norwegian Runic Poem, which, as in the Icelandic Runic Poem, names all the runes of the young futhark accompanied by a stanza alluding to the name of each of the runes. There is also a third Runic Poem: the Anglo-Saxon. Runic poems are believed to have served as a mnemonic tool for remembering the names of the runes and their order in the alphabet. It is an important compilation of popular culture of the time, comparable to old English sayings, Gnomonic poetry, and Old Norse poetry. The Norwegian runic poem, written in Old Norse, has been preserved in a 17th century copy of a destroyed 13th century manuscript. This poem appears in skaldic meter. And it has the following structure: The first line of each stanza is a phrase of the following type: "name of the rune + copula + X", where X is an attribute to the name of the rune, followed by a second rhymed line that provides some information somehow related to the previous sentence.
In this poem and in Icelandic, all the runes of the young futhark appear in the same order. The names of the 16 runes and their order is as follows:
Fé, Úr, Þurs, Óss, Ræið, Kaun, Hagall, Nauðr, Ís, Ár, Sól, Týr, Bjarkan, Maðr, Lögr, Ýr
ᚠ - Wealth causes dispute between relatives. The wolf inhabits the forest.
ᚢ - All dross comes from bad iron. Reindeer often run on frozen snow.
ᚦ - A troll causes disease in women. Few men find joy in misfortune.
ᚬ - The end of the river is the path for most trips. And a scabbard is the fate of swords.
ᚱ - It is said that riding is the worst for the horse. Reginn forged the best sword.
ᚴ - The ulcer is a curse for children. Death makes a man pale.
ᚼ - Hail is the coldest grain. Kristr created the world of yesteryear.
ᚾ - Anguish leaves little choice. A naked man is chilled by frost.
ᛁ - Ice we call a wide bridge. A blind man needs guidance.
ᛅ - Abundance is a blessing to men. I say that Fróde was generous.
ᛋ - The sun is the light of the world. I bow down to all that is sacred.
    ᛏ - Tyr is a one-handed god. Often a blacksmith must forge.
ᛒ - A birch has the greenest leaves. Loki forged times of deception.
ᛘ - Man is the product of dust. Strong is the claw of a hawk.
ᛚ - A waterfall is a river that falls from the mountain. All treasures are gold.
ᛦ - Yew is the greenest of winter trees. It tends to crunch when burned.
Male voice lyrics are names and words from German, Danish, Norwegian and Finnish (still unconfirmed).
    Uunia runus sigurd.
    Fähig ani regina gunda.
