I Got Robbed On A Camping Trip... Don't Do What I Did!

- Many years of adventure travel back and forth across the United States, and never once was I stolen from. It's only a matter of time before it is destined to happen. Truth is, I could have avoided all of it, and you can, too, if you take a little more time. Don't be careless. Follow the simple rules of overland travel, and you won't get jacked. It is easier said than done.

It doesn't need to be a built up rig to be a target. We got robbed last summer on a trip to the west coast, at a place where we least expected it. I always worried about it when at hotels, but never had an issue. The place I had an issue was in a residential neighborhood. But, we were an SUV with out of state plates, a cargo carrier on top, and a hitch mounted carrier in the back. That made it evident that we were traveling, and whoever took our stuff appears to have been driving the neighborhood looking for targets. We even had almost everything out of the vehicle. All that remained was a few things in the back under a pile of jackets. Nothing was visible, but they must have looked in with a flashlight, seen the pile of jackets and just decided to look anyway. So they broke the back window and dug under the jackets and found about $1000 of stuff to steal that we just didn't even think about - like a rain coat, a pair of new shoes, a small tool kit and an air compressor. Basically, when traveling and not staying in your vehicle - just take everything out and don't make it look like your might be hiding something, because they'll break your window just to see if you are.
Really good info, I appreciate you sharing that!
That really sucks! I always hide everything under my cargo cover, even jackets. Thieves don’t know if those are jackets or bags until they break in.
This was an important story to tell. Thank you.
I've heard it said that "Wisdom comes from experience and experience comes from making mistakes." We all do it. That's how we learn. Safe travels.
Much appreciated and thank you for the comment!
Sorry to hear but glad you shared to keep us on our toes! Thanks again!
Anytime! Thanks for the comment!
Unfortunately in THIS SOCIETY, we have a tendency to blame ourselves when we are violated, whether it be stolen from, verbally assaulted, physically attacked, swindled etc. In hindsight we, the victims, woulda, coulda, shoulda done more, but ultimately the blame should always be put on the victimizer. These crimes don’t happen in many countries at this rate and absolutely should not happen this frequently in the wealthiest country on the planet. We, as a society allow criminals to get away with way too much. Americans have become too soft on crime AND soft when it comes to raising our children. We need stricter penalties and need to be better parents and role models to future generations.
I don't disagree with anything you just said 🗽
Abus marine lock is what I use for my roam box and traction boards. Doesn't rust in weather and great keyed lock
I appreciate the advice!
Oh man, that's brutal. I happen to live near that Holiday Inn Express, and didn't think of it as a place where robbery was a concern. But then, you mentioned you were parked outside of the hotel lot. Homeless folks and other scrufflers do roam that area at night. So sorry that ruined an otherwise nice vacation.
Thanks for the comment! Totally brutal way to end the trip for sure.
Locked up or not air tags are your best friend tracked my stolen tent in 5 hours.
That's such a genius idea
Thanks for sharing the story; always a good reminder. That spidey sense is wildly accurate. Also worth noting that IQ drops at either end of spectrum, like during anger or during disengagement, so in a lot of ways we are not ourselves during those moments. Aside from the emotional stressors in those moments, decision making is hampered mentally.
Much appreciated!
I know how you feel! My Power Wagon was broken into less than 100’ from my work in Atlanta.
That is so brutal! Sorry to hear that, sir!
Atlanta here too. I had a Truck entered into in my carport and all my camping camera gear stolen. I did make it easier for the thieves though. I was home from the ER after getting stiches for my son's leg due to a minor injury on the camping trip. We were tired and it was the one night I forgot to lock the door. Still in Atlanta but I have a garage now.
So sorry it happened to you
This is happening all over USA since COVID, stealing is the new norm and just sucks
It's all good. I agree with you entirely. Thanks for the comment!
Neighbor friend of ours climbed red rock area near Vegas just yesterday or the day before. He's from Oregon, maybe was in your group....he owned a Climbing Facility in California and retired here in Oregon. Dave's his name, wonderful fellow. Thanks for the video....I need the reminder.
Thanks for the comment!
ya, i visit vegas a lot. i have a friend who lives there. literally her car is empty, and if i rent a car i NEVER leave anything in it. that being said. its NOT YOUR FAULT. we have been conditioned by whoever to be victims and blame ourselves. because its 'wrong' to blame the criminal now for some reason. sorry this happened to you man.
I appreciate the kind words, my friend. I agree, it's not my fault, but I knew better than to leave my stuff in the car and I got lazy. Moral of the story, don't be lazy and you have a lesser probability of getting robbed.
Condolences. My car stereo was stolen in college & still think about it. Who steals in front of a church omg?!
The people who have less than you it seems. Thanks for the comment!
Not your fault at all. It’s all the thieves fault. You did nothing wrong. You should be able to leave it all unlocked and it still be safe. Sorry that happened
I agree and appreciate the kind words, my friend.
I'm based in Texas, and prefer the desert southwest between here and California. Recently made a road trip photo expedition to Saguaro NP and Joshua Tree. Got tired of seeing "Caution, smuggling and illegal immigration in this area" signs. I may start limiting my travels to areas where I'm allowed to defend myself and my property. Real shame that our so-called leaders don't do anything about this. I use two rifle boxes on the roof of my Suburban that are bolted down to 80/20 cross rails...thieves will need tools to get them off. After watching this, I may explore adding a micro switch to the underside of each case that would trigger the vehicle alarm if they're tampered with.
It may not be a bad idea. I will be locking my items down from now on, lesson learned.
You definitely did not deserve this and it wasn't your fault. The people that do these things have no respect or concern for anyone and usually lead a miserable life because of their screwed up actions.
That is very true. I appreciate it!
If you travel full time and don’t have residency, can you still have home owner’s insurance? Or would it be covered under the car insurance?
That's a really good question. I would ask an insurance agent that. I would assume it would be covered under auto, but you know what they say when you assume.
This really sucks. You just can not trust anyone or anywhere. I try to keep my truck as incognito as possible.
I should really try to do the same. Appreciate the comment.
Well, crap. And, no, you didn't deserve to be robbed even if you were lazy about securing your gear. People just plain shouldn't steal/destroy other people's stuff. Thieves piss me off like few other people can. I'm so sorry that happened.
It's all good, things happen and I appreciate you comment!
I have the same ROAM boxes. How was your box mounted to your roof rack? Did you have the ROAM mounts but no locks? Or, it was stolen despite the locks on the ROAM mounts? 🤔
it was stolen despite the mounts, but I did not have the mounts locked.
Sorry to hear but does this happen all over the West Coast or just certain areas.
I think any major metro area is prone to this happening.
Very true but I meant out on the trails.
Just curious, if someone breaks into your roof box, etc- is the content covered via homeowner’s insurance or auto? Good things we all should know! You’re totally right re East coast vs West. I think another thing we can do is tint your windows to deter the visual of content inside. Getting my 24 OBW tinted next week. Sorry to hear what happened brother!
Everything inside the vehicle is covered through your home owners policy and the windows were covered by the auto policy. I agree on the windows! Mine were tinted at the time.
@@roamingwithjosh thanks for the reply and I hope that situation resolved itself!
oh no! man! brother Nomad! i've been very busy building my wilderness these past couple of months, and i saw your new post and i'm so disappointed for you!
All is well, my friend! Thanks for checking in!
Damn man, a good reminder for me to update the new camera/lenses I recently got on my insurance policy. Did you at least get the images off your cards? That would have hurt the most, the rest is replaceable.
I did not, but they were pretty much empty. I had a couple shots that I had already transferred to my comp. I didn't lose anything that was priceless in terms of data.
No one deserves that, that sucks dude
Stupid mistakes can lead to stupid results
This was on your GX? As as GX owner, did the alarm go off when they opened the door or smashed the glass? (Not that people pay attention to car alarms)
I don't believe it did. It was not going off when I came out in the morning.
@@roamingwithjosh I would imagine they eventually shut off on their own, but I wish we could know if it went off at all. Probably did, just no one cared.
How wild you just passed by me in my hometown 5 min ago
Where?
@@roamingwithjosh I was going down grant rd this morning and passed by you
Holiday Inn for the win!
Classic
Vegas? Of course
Exactly.
sorry man... that sucks
I appreciate it!
Dirty Vegas
Agreed!
Saying you deserve to have your stuff stolen because you we're too lazy to bring it into your hotel is pretty dumb. How about scumbags shouldn't steal stuff in the first place?
I hate how common personal items are stolen from vehicles and vehicle theft in general is nowadays.
I agree with you. I do hold some responsibility for being lazy, but being lazy doesn't mean I should have all my stuff stolen. Appreciate the comment!
Bummer. 🙁
Agreed
Lots of desperate people these days. Glad your timing didn’t have you interrupting the thieves.
✌️
Agreed on both fronts! Thanks for the comment
Ordered the bumper from them, used yer code.
Much appreciated, my friend!
Travel advice: limo tint
As someone who is a vegas local this really sucks… We continue to get these kind of criminals moving in from California.
It's a shame for your city, my friend.
bingo. glad you said it. they voted themselves out of affordable housing, so now they move to vegas and texas and scum up the place
Bro nooooooooo!
No is right my friend
As a Vegas local, ew rainbow.
lol where were you when I needed you!
You did not deserve it, but you were not as careful as you could have been. I will not leave my built vehicle alone in any parking lot. I have a dashcam system with cell capability that alerts me if anyone even walks past my car.
I should definitely take more care, I got complacent and this is the end result.
My rule is to never leave your rig no matter what the situation is. People will take advantage of any situation and steal you blind.
I broke that rule for sure. Thanks for the comment!
Only disliked cuz of what happened. Hope everything works out for you.
Appreciate the support!
Crappy situation dude. That said, you should change the title of your video to "My car was burglarized". Robbery involves the use of force or threats another person...which is not what happened here. Your unoccupied vehicle was burgled while you were in a hotel.
Thanks for the comment!
You were not robbed, but your vehicle was burglarized. Nevada Revised Statute § 205.060 defines the crime of burglary as entering a building or vehicle with the intent to commit larceny, assault, battery, or any felony once inside.
Thanks, detective!
Brother, always trust your gut instincts; you have the sixth sense gift. @@roamingwithjosh
It's actually not a burglary detective. It's a larceny from a vehicle.
In Nevada, it's a vehicle burglary, (NRS 205.060 just like in California PC 459. I investigated over 1000 vehicle burglaries and I kinda know what I am talking about. www.leg.state.nv.us/NRS/NRS-205.html#NRS205Sec060@@cried5845

Lololol
I had my truck broken into when Trump was president. I had my car stereo stolen when President Reagon was in office. It doesn't matter who is in the office people just s*ck! 🤷♀
Always blame someone else.
@@roamingwithjosh
The Amerika Biden is creating goes way beyond this. I could list cause and effect but, really, nobody will care.
@@robertherrmann4823lol probably blamed trump for everything. But Biden has fostered this environment downsizing police departments while opening the border for illegals coming across to take everything.
