Agreed. You need to commit time and focused effort to your endeavor. I was a math-physics double major as an undergrad and worked: I painted houses, interiors and exteriors. To say that my time was structured would be an understatement. Four years of 19 hour days! The thing that kept me going was love of mathematics; I wanted deep understanding. It was arduous, but in a sense the most fulfilling time of my life. It transformed me. And yes, I still do math every day, usually IMO questions or Putnam Exam questions, but when I'm rushed I settle for optimization problems, or perhaps working with the Pell equation in new and interesting ways. It's kept my mental machinery functioning well into my late 60s.
Tomorrow I attend my 50-year high school reunion. I plan on working to at least 80 with a little luck. I don't think it's that old either, but I know that a vanishingly small percentage of the population still has my mental acuity at 68, because I'm out there among them. I'll ask some of my more mathematically inclined classmates how many are still doing IMO and Putnam exam questions. I'll give you a report. I was an outlier 50 years ago - even before that, truthfully - so I don't expect to have much to report...@@seal7513

I’m working on my second degree but so thankful that I somehow managed to have the discipline and wisdom to be able to set time aside, seven days a week. although, I do notice that I take a lot of breaks and I’m not sure if that is a consequence of studying every single day if there’s any advice, I would love to have it. Like a video on the quality of study and how to achieve higher quality time.
when I realise that I'm spending too much time on a problem and don't do any noticeable progress, I just leave it for the future. It doesn't mean that I'm giving up: I would come back to it after getting stronger math expertise.
I find the more I do math the more math I want to do. The ability to put in the time, effort, and have the patience builds upon itself. If I go for a long time without doing any math the harder it becomes for me to put other things aside and do math. But if I do math regularly it gets easier and I start looking forward to sitting down and doing math.
That's what I'm just getting up to myself, and it's finally all starting to make sense to me! Basic integration seems like all that's necessary to see the connections.

I can ask for more or less hours in the weekly schedule. On my lunch breaks I’ve been self-studying. In the coming semester I need to create a study plan. I have taken many notes in my notebook. Your channel has been helpful with my note taking.

Inequalities tripped me up as well. In advanced microeconomics we needed to solve optimization problems with inequality constraints using the Lagrangian. ....pages of hand written problem solving. I remember thinking: " What have I got myself into?"

But sometimes I have no choice but to give up and come back to it later. And quite often when I do come back to it later everything will kick in and suddenly I get it. Its a great feeling whe. The understanding finally kicks in. It is also a demonstration of just how important taking breaks is to understanding math.

The ancients knew, which is why Plato said “Let no one enter who hasn’t studied geometry.” I’ve seen it from personal experience, too. There seems to be a positive correlation between learning math hardcore & other enhancing qualities.

13:30 In Norway we have 2 hours of problem solving with our Professor after lectures. Because of so many student having to fill several rooms they hire student assistants who have already finished the course previously to assist. This year I went through our entire course during the summer vacation, so when we started this fall, I skipped linear algebra 2, and went straight to multivariable calculus. They usually ask the students with decent grades who take multivariable calculus if they want to work a semester as a student assistant for the previous math course. So I got the job as a student assistant teaching linear algebra 2(Fourier, Eigen, PDE's and Laplace etc..) even though I still haven't taken the exam myself yet. So this semester I get paid to study for my own exam, and teaching my co students, which is awsome.
My problem is I dont know how to move forward. So I think of Math as Chess, knowing how to move few steps in your mind before actually doing it. So this means learning from Worked examples and repeating the same.
After you have tangled with your lecture notes and the problem set, pester the Professor and Teaching Assisant with questions at their office hours. No one usually shows up anyway, so approaching them after you have made some effort is generally well received. They will appreciate your interest in the course. If you are a Major in the course of study, office hours are a great way to build a rapport with the Faculty and Grad Students.
Your channel is a haven man. You're one of the reasons why I enjoy mathematics so much-honestly. Naturally, I'm more predisposed towards philosophy and psychology but mathematics literally morphs your brain-and your mind in incredible, often inexplicable ways. I want to get better at probability brain transfer problems like the quant finance books. They are really hard despite being questions on very simple concepts.
I’m a medical doctor and triple majored in math chemistry and electrical engineering at a top 20 university. My advice that continues to help to this day is study first thing in the morning, drink coffee and water, you can study 2-4 hours easy, usually fasting, every day without burning out. Do the hard things first. At night, make reading a habit.
Too long 😂. Also I never celebrate accomplishments as success is what was expected. You have to have some arrogance and take not being able to solve something almost as a personal insult. You have to have self belief that you are destined for great things and that if you apply yourself you can accomplish your goal. Your greatest fear has to be not living up to your potential. Finally you have to take full accountability for your life.
