    I went up there from Central Texas for the one vacation I took during the 17 yrs I lived there- and it was amazing. It was 1993, and it wasn't so much 'crystal mining' as it was 'crystal picking'. I made it to one mine the day after they'd blasted another area and taken the stuff they wanted, leaving it wide open for those who paid $10 for the day to take what they found. I was at several mines, and came home with 6 14 qt buckets of crystals, and several bags of oxalic acid. It was hot in August, but still one of the best times I had when I was still able to travel. I found a large double term slightly smoky point (about 4 inches long and 1.5 inches in diameter), some tabbies, and other great pieces. Also got some clusters cheap from those tables people had out in their yards. Incredible time. :) You guys hit a great area !

    Option 3 Megan's tree looks promising and I think its Dauphiné law.

      You know what? If Option 3 gets the most votes, Megan's tree will be the first place to check subsurface for a pocket. In Colorado, that layout on the surface nearly garantees a pocket right below. I know you know. Looking forward to sharing how it unfolds.🌿

    Murfreesboro AR is south of Ouachita and theres the commercialized crater of diamonds as well as some public lands, but you seem to do your research. I found lots of milky blue quartz as a child (not like your phantoms) that I was told are a good indicator of a diamond source... sadly id find these towards the end of our day trip and then we wouldnt go back for a while and then others already stripped the area I was in.
    Also, just day hiking some of the natl forest trails around the lake yield lots of wash out finds
    In my youth, my father would drop me off on one of the island in the lake and while he fished in circles around the island, I dug through the red clay banks of the island that were exposed by the rise and fall of the lake. Found many beauties in those days
    Best time to go is when the lake is looow as the water traffic will be lower and the banks will be super exposed, take a canoe or john boat and your camping gear, the lake weeds will be dense, and do a little island hopping/camping. Oh, if you have a bug shirt, I suggest this as well. Just look on the map and pick an area pocketed with islands and in some cases you can wade through the water between them. Lots of shale, but in some of the areas there are hidden pockets of pebbles from topsoil and clay erosion that get trapped in the shale below the water line and are fully exposed or easily accessible, sometimes they are in areas that catch the constant lapping of the water which is just a natural rock tumbler, regardless you can pan through the pebbled areas and find crystals as well
    Those islands are all essentially "Crystal Vistas" as they are all the same mountain range.
    Just dont look like obvious prospectors, lol
    Enjoy!

      Thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughful and informative comment Samwise, I copied it to a document to keep for the next journey to Arkansas. Island hopping by small boat and swimming in search of crystals on the banks sounds like a fairytale. It's genius you thought to use the force of the water as an erosion-style backhoe for finding pockets in the clay banks. Thanks for the super practical tips for success on this as well; I can't wait to start mapping routes with topo and geologic overlays. My first experience in Arkansas was quite rainy so it will take good timing and a bit of luck for us to catch it when the water is low. ( :
      About the blue quartz. Everything you're saying checks out. One of my geology classmates is studying kimberlite pipes, such as the one that generated the Crater of Diamonds. She studies minerals that form in kimberlites as proxies for pressure-temperature conditions and uses that info to hypothesize origins for the structures. One of the kimberlite minerals that she most frequently studies is ilmenite, an iron-titanium oxide. Titanium is the trace element inclusion that often gives quartz the diffuse blue hue that you described. Thus, finding milky blue quartz would absolutely be an indicator of diamonds in the immediate vicinity. What an excellent deduction you've made. I'll share anything we find.✨
      Cheers,
      Hunter Frith

    Could the brown dirt in the tailings pile be the original ground level before the tailings weer dumped there? Nice Dauphine twin in the end there. (confidently incorrect maybe) I'd like to see a backcountry prospecting video as the next topic.

    • @EverythingIsSpirit
      @EverythingIsSpirit 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Anthony, that's an excellent observation. The only thing that throws me off about it being the original ground level is that large (>brick-size) blocks of sandstone were occurring in both colours of soil and there were air gaps between these blocks in both layers. Still, it could very well be ground level and that explanation makes the most sense. It would also make the most sense for why there are more crystals in the clay/dump section.

      We were so mesmerized by everything leading up to it that we didn't even make it to the mine.😅 If the option for finding a big pocket at Crystal Vista receives the most votes, we'll definitely head to the mine on our next trip. ( :
