Cant really fault someone too much for writing the music they like. Clearly NF enjoys doing this style. And when i first heard this new album, it came off as driven by his changing life circumstances. Becoming a parent and whatnot.

    • @accountnew7030
      @accountnew7030 ปีที่แล้ว +20

but you can clearly see that he hit the plateau. this new album seems like a copy of his previous album but with a slightly different theme. musically there's almost no difference but when it comes to lyrics he's become a little bland, boring and predictable. I like the fact that he's getting better at dealing with his issues and that he's in a happy place in his life but what made him interesting in the first place is his shtick of being this broken guy that goes through the hardships in life and is trying to understand his mind and it's responses to the horrible outside reality. Without it he's just a ... I don't even know just a regular pop artist with a christian twist. I can even predict what his next album is going to be about. it's going to be about him raising his kid, comparing him raising them up with his own childhood and how he is thankful to god for his family and how it gives him inspiration etc etc, while bitching how he's so unique and how other rappers only rap about money and bitkhes (when literally no rapper does that anymore). literally there's only 2 songs out of this album that I would probably listen to everyday. mediocre. can't say more about it and I'm gonna be very surprised if I'm wrong and he actually comes up with a banger album next but I doubt it

I disagree with this analysis, but I understand where he's coming from. Fantano is speaking directly about the music itself, which is his job. Musically it is the same stuff we've heard from Mansion, to Clouds. Conceptually it's miles different however. This album (as all of NF's albums) are made for his fans, not the industry. That's the point he was trying to make throughout this album.
When he talks about not being an industry clone, he means that he could push his musical boundaries, but that's not what he makes music to do. He doesn't make music for the recognition of his peers. He makes music to speak to those who really listen to him. I'm not saying you should listen to him, but he makes music for those who do. People from the outside, who don't care about what he has to say, will see monotony in him musically (Fantano). Which is 100% understandable. But for those who have been in really dark places in life and followed NF as he poured his demons out on songs over the last 10 years, this album is his Magnum Opus. For all of those fans who related to the things he's gone through and written about, this album proves to everyone that there is a light on the other side. The album is titled Hope, not because NF is hopeful for anything, but to show all of his fans who he knows go through similar problems, that they need to hold on to Hope. That you will always find your way out of dark places if you work hard enough to.
Yes musically this is everything we have heard before, and I'm not arguing with the review in any way. But this album was never created for the Fantanos of the world. It was created for everyone who has been on this journey with him for years, who actually care about the struggles he goes through, and feel like we can connect with him and his journey through his music. This one meant a lot to his fans.

Very few artists had a consistent story/journey they take people on from album to album. Thats not to say it hasnt been done before, but i havent seen someone do it the NF has. Hope, Happy, Motto, and a few other songs from this album were really good to me, and other were hard misses. I still though it was good and am excited to see what comes next because we can see hjm trying to figure out how to fit his style while not losing himself back into that downward spiral he used to sing from previously. No one can blame you for your opinion, but I feel like it’s pretty off. You say stuff is tacky and you don’t like the sound, but you don’t say why. How is it tacky? Also, you say he just copies Eminem but how? He doesn’t cuss, he doesn’t make profane jokes, he doesn’t use the same kind of beats, he raps about different things. Sure he’s influenced by Eminem but that’s a big difference. It’s like you give him a hard time for being different but then also mark him down for having some Eminem influence. I just feel like your points are contradictory. “He’s too much like Eminem, but I don’t like that he doesn’t cuss like Eminem or appeal to the same audience as Eminem”. I honestly find it kind of corny that you think something has to be not “PG” to be good and have a message. Why does being safe in that sense make it bad? Not every artists has to use slurs bro. It’s okay if some talk about growing and going to therapy and being there for their kids and wife. Like I said, everyone can have their own opinion, but I feel like you just don’t like his style and can’t resonate with his message, which is totally valid, but needed some long winded snobby reason to say that. I’m really not trying to be rude. Just giving my honest thoughts on your review. I will say, I do agree that he spends too much time talking about the industry. It definitely gets a little old. I’m not saying the album is perfect. I just really don’t see the reason or rationale in some of your arguments.

Worst song was Bullet. I just can't bring myself to give a single eff about any "I love my wife" song. Also, NF's complaints about the industry are so shallow and weird. My brother-in-law introduced me to NF with HOPE and I really liked it. Despite what Melon says, given the context of NF's journey it is quite a powerful point in his career. Granted, he is right that the orchestration is quite a bit overboard, though. I haven't dug too far back in his discography, but I could really tell that NF has talent.
My brother-in-law has been trying to get me to finish this album, though and I'm just really struggling to get through it. And a lot of what Anthony is saying really describes my feeling toward it. Like, I know this guy has the skill to make something meaningful, but this just feels like hes becoming the sell-out he swears he's not. It's just so formulaic and derivative of so much from the past fifteen years. I know his mental struggles are a major theme in his music, but it really seems like he's at a point where he believes he's taking the steps to become more self aware, but really he's just projecting his own insecurities. Many of which I can empathize with, but still.

It’s also an honor to be able to win a Grammy and be able to perform at an award show but his record label doesn’t even bother to squeeze him in there because he’s going to depress everyone in that room with his “I’m not like any of you” lyrics. I get he thinks he’s an outsider or whatever but he’s already 32 and not in high school, he has money and fame so what exactly makes him feel so depressed about his own life to say he’s not popular or something. NF is actually my favourite musician. Not my favourite rapper, but i like his music style. I like his singing. And the concert i went on was, damn, it was a blast. Really, really good. Although there are some parts i don't enjoy about him. My teeth are gritting when i hear that high pitched voice in some of the songs. The Hope album isn't very deep in meaning, but i think it adds very well to his dicsography. There is some evident growth as a human, especially the song MAMA agains How Could You Leave Us in 2016. Regardless, this is one of the albums i enjoy, i like to return to it and even there is the one song that i hate, and it has not enough SUFFICE. Damn. The biggest problem I see people have with him being he is basically almost not evolving. But, the thing with this album is, it is a getaway to the second half of 2010's for me. And i very much enjoy it. I think this album is enjoyable, i can't really judge him for making the music that he himself likes. I do too.

Bruh. This whole video is a personal opinion and very misleading.
People need to stop comparing artists.
When it comes to NF it's his lyrics that are important.
He's defending himself and making sure people know why he's here.
All whilst dropping the most real truth out there about life.
Now for my personal opinion because that's what this whole video is.
    Eminem can't compare to NF.

      3. eminem outdoes NF in rapping. obviously. how does NF outdo eminem? not really at all. what more is there to it than eminem being a better rapper lmao

And no, you shouldn't compare artists, nor should you compare really anything to anything in life.
And I never said he was more skilled a spitting lines.
He's better because the lines he spits have layer upon layer of meaning, the more you think about them.
And he arguably has the biggest change out of most artist out there. He references his own songs in many of his other songs. Along with many references in general.
And unlike most artists his albums go in order to tell a story of a bigger picture.
Now if we're talking just music. Then I see where you're coming from.
As I said though, there's way more to it then just tune/skill of the artist.
      It all adds up.

NF is just doing what he wants to. You've said multiple times that he's trying to make something different, but failing. However, you're just wrong. He's not saying that about the sound, but rather about the lyrics and the meaning of what he's saying. Take "Mama," for example. That entire song is about forgiving his mother, which is something he has historically held a grudge about ("How could you leave us?"). This is supposed to be about him finally getting better and how he's going to do new stuff. Think of it like this:
Everything before this is about his depression and mental health problems.
This is about finally getting better and taking steps towards better mental health and a new outlook on life.
The next album will probably be completely new.
Take the first song of the album (which I actually don't like very much), "Hope," where he's fighting his past self for control. Then look at the last track, "Running," where he's talking about moving on from "NF" the character and finally evolving.
"I don't wanna wait another day
I've waited long enough, I'm ready
I can see the sun, it's comin' up
    There's happiness on the horizon"
He's finally letting go of his trauma, struggles with self-hate, and all the pain.
He's finally going to be better, and part of that is letting go of this chapter of his life. "Pride" has been a metaphor for this character "NF," and now he's letting go of his pride and with it his old self. This isn't going to be an experimental album, but the next album might be a bit different. I understand why you might not like it, but I think it's fine, at least a light 5. I think you have a tendency to just miss the message of songs and albums entirely or be more harsh on certain albums than others.

I think that you might not have listened to his older stuff which a lot of it is not stuff meant to be sung along to but rather just to be listened to and absorbed. It's not for everyone, but I find your critique to be unnecessarily harsh and rather tone deaf. I'm not sure why he bothers you so much but admittedly I just happened upon this video and clicked play ----I'm assuming that this type of overly personally critical review is your thing.

How can you call this review harsh when all it’s doing is showing how the shit NF blabs about simply isn’t true? Like fantano said, NF isn’t some exception or outlier in the industry. He makes boring, average, safe music that is outshined by anything else in their respective genres. He makes such generic music and pretends it’s groundbreaking. How is that harsh? It’s simply true. Your comment is so worshipy and negates anything constructive that was said in this review.

Listen I get it, I used to be a really big fan of NF, but as I expanded my music taste further, he’s not nearly as good as I thought he was. This review is not overly critical, and it is a pretty solid and unbiased review of music that is super overrated. I wouldn’t say NF’s music is bad, you just need to listen to different artists and genres to understand why he’s not that good.

@@aleatheltrashcan478 I would agree with this-- he's not as good as it felt like he was when I first discovered his music. Maybe it was because I (for some reason) took it upon myself to memorize the lyrics to The Search and used to torture/entertain my high school age kids in the car on the way to school performing it (hey they had a talent show where a couple of kids performed this song and my kids said my version was better! ;) Anyway. Or maybe it was the fact that The Search (album) came out right after I bought my beloved Chrysler Sebring convertible (RIP!) and I have these vivid memories of driving on the 78 freeway with the top down blasting the album and singing along and feeling free (not a common feeling for me sadly). Maybe it's because one night I decided to see what his older stuff sounded like and so I sat and listened to a lot of it on TH-cam and cried my eyes out multiple times because I wasn't prepared for how intimate and vulnerable a few of the tracks were and that made an impression on me. I admit that my affinity for NF is in part really my empath side feeling his pain (everything is relative) and as a result silently rooting for him to make it past the things that caused it. It could be because the line "We've all got something that we've trapped inside that we try to suffocate, you know, hoping it dies, try to hold it under water but it always survives til it comes up out of nowhere like an evil surprise, then it hovers over you to tell you millions of lies" (and most of the rest of the song as well as a lot of what he says in Leave me Alone) hit me right in the gut because I sincerely know exactly what he means by this, having experienced it myself most of my life. Not every artist does that for me. Many others do, of course. Perhaps I was already primed to enjoy NF having loved other decidedly exclusively introspective music by similarly self-absorbed artists like Trent Reznor (who I swear I was going to marry for several years. I love you Trent!). Point being that I acknowledge that a lot of what I like enough about NF to have felt compelled to rush to defend him against the critical guy who made the video that this is a comment on is more about myself and less about his music. I'm glad that I found his music as well because it led me to find other excellent artists like Samson and Burden who I now adore and celebrate when something new comes out. I think that Samson is just as clever if not more clever than NF and his music tends to be the opposite of NF---always a commentary on things outside of himself. If you haven't heard of him, I encourage you to check him out. I like Burden's conviction and agree with a lot of his observations. Anyway--sorry for the long response waxing poetic in the middle there for a moment. I just felt like I needed to make it known that I do agree with what you said and while I don't take back what I said about NF, I acknowledge that my opinion is not unbiased.
