Install a 12V USB hub in Tesla Model 3 to free up your USB ports for v9 Dashcam and Music

  • You'll need:
    12V USB hub. I used this one - amzn.to/2NFovj1
    T20 Torx head screwdriver
    black tape to help hold the wire in place
    With Version 9 being released (I actually got it this morning) many were wondering how they could have both of their phones plugged in while being able to use the USB port for a thumb drive for the new dash cam feature. Here's my install, and also, be careful not to drop a screw between the seat and console!

    Just did this and it works great. I used wirecutters to snip out the plastic to make the 'notches'. One suggestion: be very precise about where you put the front notch - you want the cable to come out right at the seam between the two pivot panels so that it doesn't block either one from closing completely. Otherwise, great video. Thanks!

      @CyberOwners  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, if I did it again I’d put it slightly back toward the console. I just had to cut further down to keep from blocking the panel

      Thanks, did it like that also. Used wirecutters + drill to finish properly. Also, for those reading it in 2021+, I recommend the Baseus 120W with PD and QC.

    You can also format your USB stick into two partitions to store dash cam footage and music on the same stick. I only need one charger in my car so this works great for me and no added cost

    That is a great idea. Plus the phones should charge faster hooked up to the hub rather than the factory USB ports. Nice job.

      Fast charging does not work with iPhones unless you have an iPhone 8 or later, a USB-C Power Adapter, and a USB-C to Lightning adapter cable. Won't work in the car, unless you also have a power inverter.

      If only he would tell us how he cut those notches. I tried a utility blade and was not able to cut through the thick plastic, so now the cable runs on the outside, which is very ugly.

    This is a much better option for having ports available for other devices to charge. I like this because then I can keep 2 or 3 Lightning/USB-C combination cables Velcro tied up in that compartment should my passengers in the pack seat need it on those longer trips...now that we can spend more time going to destinations with loved ones because there’s no crazy fuel prices to be concerned about!

    Thanks for the video. Would a "flat" USB cable rather than rounded allow to install without cutting any additional notch?

      Also how much charging speed did you notice? I'm trying to run my Jeda from USB at the front right now, it doesn't charge quick enough and loses phone power when running a navigation app always-on like Wayze or Google Maps. Hoping this 12V solution either maintains the same battery or hopefully at least slowly charges up! Assume you used QC 12V?

    I'm pulling the plastic trim but it feels like I'm going to break it apart, the whole console flexes with it. Yours seem to just "slide" off. Can't tell if I'm doing something wrong and I should just pull harder. It does unpop a bit, but not all the way out (I can see the metal clip).

    Thanks! Does the 12V adapter+wire, bump into the factory cubby when placed in the console?
    I had to get a flush-mount 12V adapter to be able to keep my cubby there... this looks too long.
    eg @2:24 you show the plug, but no cubby in the console area.

    I bought this device too, as this is a great idea. Unfortunately you don't tell us how you actually cut tose two extra notches. I tried it with a utility blade, and that plastic is too hard to cut through. What did you use to cut those notches?

  • @GiulianoTaddei

    So I just tried doing this but the cable seems to lift the metal from the plastic railing - do you have that issue and does your magnetic tray not open when you push from the top not bottom? I just realized this after the fact

    • @CyberOwners
      @CyberOwners  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Near the door or near the plug? Near the plug I cut a notch. Near the door up top I had to put it in the right spot where the plastic is lower.

      @GiulianoTaddei 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CyberOwners near the door where the USB hub would live. I think the cable may be too thick.. the console where you can push down won't budge anymore- i would have to press the opposite spot to open it

    Why not just buy a splitter for plugging in straight at the cars usb? What is the max current avail. From the car? 2x2amp? By splitting those portsfor data it should not take much amp for charging away i would think

    • @CyberOwners
      @CyberOwners  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure, but I had read that there were issues having the nomad wireless charger with both wires plugged into a hub, and that the dashcam drive needed to be plugged directly into the port. I figured anything powered can plug into the hub, and anything data can plug into the two ports.

      Here's a video where a guy shows that he gets lower current when using a USB 1->3 splitter. Also, with the latest software update (March 2018), my Jeda wireless charge pad stopped working with the onboard USB ports. So the splitter solved that problem, too. th-cam.com/video/3JP_P0H7tm8/w-d-xo.html
