My favorite movie ending of all time. Giuletta’s acting, Fellini’s mise en scene, and Rota’s music combine perfectly. Never fails to bring a tear to my eye.

When I saw that for the first time about 5 years ago, that scene gave me an electric shock when she broke the 4th wall. She looked right at me and acknowledged my presence. AMAZING performance and film making.

So good an ending such a great film. Saw it on the big screen knowing nothing about it a week before the first lockdown hit.
My impression was that Cabiria is I irrepressible and would be alright but I know others have a more down beat view - life’s parade goes on even though your heart is broken.

Someone posted this ending on a Twitter thread a couple of weeks ago. I'd never heard of the film, but just seeing this ending made me realise I wanted to see the movie. We watched it a couple of nights ago and were all blown away and moved. I'd seen the ending but I had no context so it wasn't really a spoiler. But as the climax of the movie approached I guessed what would happen just prior to this scene and suddenly understood just how powerful the ending would be. Watching it over and over again, and it brings me to tears every time, there is something so perfect about the composition, all the beautiful young Italian people, that tune that we've heard so many times in the movie before now, the smile of joy on the face of the guitarist with the straw hat, the way the girl says Buona Sera to Maria/Cabiria and thus includes her in their joy and optimism. We don't know why they are so joyful, is it their youth is it their beauty? Is it that they are young enough to live much of their life in an Italy that is emerging from the dire misery of fascism and the war and then the postwar poverty? Is there any chance that Cabiria will be included in that future? We don't want her to end up like that poor former street walker who Cabiria was so shocked to see living in the cave. The sweetness of her final smile, where she allows some happiness back at least into her expression it's so pure.
I think I'm also sad thinking that all these people, even the young ones, have probably passed away by now. Fellini had a really great eye for people whose beauty would endure. Or maybe it's because fashions now are not so unlike 1957. I was in Positano in June, my first time there, and these gorgeous young Italians would not look out of place there today.

Watching this sitting under my desk. It feels cozy down here, reminds me of when I was a kid, when I used to play under here. The future seems to have sucked all the warmth away. But I feel comfort secluded down here, under this desk. I’ve been so lonely, watching this scene again after so many years whilst curled up under this desk really hit me hard.

Directors often break the fourth wall through the lens of humor because it truly is, in theory, ridiculous. Here is a perfect example of how to do so with grace and yet retain an element of subtle humor cloaked in beauty. One of the best endings in film history if you ask me.

That she has found a path of fellow souls after she's walked through the woods, and it starts to make sense to her after a few steps in the parade of souls on a road or in a river. Honestly, I think this scene in particular has really stuck with me more than most scenes in any movie ever (also, I'm not christian... probably sounds like it, something else)--and I'm really happy it was uploaded.

This is the only movie whose ending brings a full-throated crying jag when I see it.
    Why is that?
Fellini is the ultimate human being whose characters are people in need of love and respect.
"The Nights of Cabiria" is really not about movie, about story, about script, it is about people and Fellini loved his characters because he loved people.
You cannot analyze a Fellini movie because there is no acting, there is really no script. (After "La Strada" and "The Nights of Cabiria", he lost a little bit of this focus because he became a movie director and his movies became more complex.)
Yes, Fellini was a master, but so was Nino Rota. Fellini without Nino is impossible to envision.
Just imagine, Julietta walking at the end of "The Nights of Cabiria" in silence. No tears. No promise of a new beginning for her.
Non-verbally, Nino's music gave the hope without words. He was a genius!

I have a theory that Fellini expects us to interpret it as an unrealistic dream - it could be hers, or ours as the viewer. Have you ever seen kids that age act like that? They are idealized almost beyond all recognition. (In real life they’d probably be mocking her, as the dog bark hints at.) Likewise, film is an illusion.
Fellini may be saying to us: life is not really like the way the kids respond to her, but you should do what you can to improve it! Especially for those who are suffering!
