    Just to clarify, the makeup of a clown is definitely connected to minstrel shows. In the 1800s specifically SO much clown makeup sround the world was meant to make a caricature of a certain group of people, usually a minority group. During the civil war in America it really took off and over seas it has been a periodic “trend” of sorts throughout history. That lady is right sadly.

      There’s also different types of clowns originating in different cultures with very different histories, from what I understand. And unfortunately there are some types tied into racism, also classism and other forms of bigotry.

    • @aliamcbride
      @aliamcbride 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      I would say it is a part of clowning but it doesn't define it. There are 10s of thousands of years of rich history behind clowning. Of course that's not to dismiss it as an important aspect of clown history (and present) that anyone within the clowning sphere should be educated on and be sensitive to.

    • @AshiwiZuni
      @AshiwiZuni 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      @@aliamcbride i mean, youre a “clown enthusiast” so id say youre pretty partial to clownery lol. Theres also a pretty extensive history to oppression based on class, race, and religion too, as others have stated. Many cultural relics and archetypes in various cultural ethos around the world directly reflect the social conditions of their time. I view clowns as a reflection of social relations at any given point. You look to the clown, and see how “good” or bad the underclass is being treated at that moment. Its not an inherently good or bad thing! Just a reflection of society in more ways than one. Like any other expression of art.

    • @AshiwiZuni
      @AshiwiZuni 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@aliamcbride also just so we are clear, you mentioned ancient Egypt in reference to how theres 10s of thousands of years of clowning history and how it isnt predicated on racism, but thats kinda leaving out the part that there was racism in ancient egypt. It may not be the leading factor in the underclasses oppression by literal “god kings” but it was most definitely there and influenced the politics, and sociology of the time. Race has always been a factor in oppressive tactics deployed by the powerful. And clowning, just like any other art forms, reflects the highs and lows of those oppressive structures.

    • @aliamcbride
      @aliamcbride 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@AshiwiZuni I completely agree with everything you have said. I believe clowning to be an inherent part of humanity as it is seen to be so ingrained in all cultures. Oppression and discrimination is easily seen in the art forms of history and clowning is not immune to that. It just makes me sad to think that some people think that clowns are inherently racist (because it stops them from learning about the wonders of it) but I completely understand it. You can't separate the atrocious acts that clowning has been used for. It's also a shame that such a thing would happen because of the political power of the clown. Clowning has been and should be used to criticise the system and to act as a voice of the people but unfortunately we see the disenfranchised turn on each other, sometimes even towards their own groups and communities.
      Also you're right about the ancient Egypt part. I should have clarified that I was just using that to illustrate how old clowning is, not as an example of non-racist clowning as these clowns were often "pygmie" performers.

    The part where the guy talked about not always being happy when clowning due to outside issues reminded me so much of the time when I was working at a pet store.
    I had to put my dog down, and I called days ahead begging to have the day off after it, and they refused because that would mean I would’ve had 3 days off in a row.
    I even got reprimanded for taking too many “bathroom breaks” to go cry, and for not being friendly and engaging enough to customers that day.
    I was also doing a closing shift, so a coworker offered to do it for me instead, but the manager refused their offer.

      I remember another time when I was working at a large retail store that I had to go back to work after putting my cat down, which sucked too. I was a “support associate” though, so I didn’t have to have much customer interaction.
      However, the fact that I was surrounded by animals and animal products all day, and forced to put on a smile and cherry attitude for customers, just made it hurt so much more than that time.
      This wasn’t a big brand pet store either. This was a kind of mom and pop sort of place who prides themselves on being a super friendly and are very passionate about animals well-being. If only they extended that kindness to their employees.
      The manger told my coworker (the one who offered to take my closing shift) and I that she felt bad that’d he’d have to stay an extra 2-3 hours, so that’s why she didn’t want him to do it. I’m positive though that she just didn’t want him working overtime again that week.

    As a clown enthusiast, I'm gonna be annoying and give my two cents on these questions.
    1. Anyone who knows anything about clown costume/makeup design knows that it is very easy to make the design scary because of the Uncanny Valley. Exaggerating features in makeup has bene brought over from the theatre but it can become very unsettling when seen up close. Clowns also often work with children and any situation that child is in with high emotions can result in a long-lasting fear. AND the influx of clowns in horror has certainly made an impact.
    2. For professional clowns, I would assume it would be very uncomfortable to associate their clown character with anything sexual because it is tied to their job and their interactions with children. Coulrophilia is thriving but I doubt it is within professional circles, especially since it goes against the Clown Code of Ethics. Presumably clowns who want to participate in that would have a separate character/costume.
    3. Obviously not. Stupid question.
    4. Clowns are VERY educated. It is extremely difficult to get into clown school and it's very prestigious. Obviously not all clowns get official education but they would still have to do their research. You have to look into comedy, art, performance, design, makeup, character development, fashion. There's also a lot of history to clowning that you'd learn. Not to mention the specialisation of clowns such as clown nurses. And the applied knowledge, the ways in which you interact with audience members and children. Clowning is an art form and as such there is a lot to learn.
    5. Subjective question, depends on the person.
    6. It doesn't matter who you are and what you do, you are not always happy when you're working. Clowning is a performance art and, if you're good at it, you can easily pretend to be happy. Clowns are not immune from the struggles of life.
    7. There is so much nuance to this that it's impossible to talk about in one paragraph but I'll give it a go. Clowning is not inherently racist. Clowns have existed since Ancient Egypt and it is not based in racism. There are cultures in which clowns are very important to spiritual rites. Clowning is inherent to humanity and is international. That said, some of modern clowning is shaped by racism. Blackface is a type of clown. Some of what you see in Bozo costumes is based on discrimination against the Irish (red curly hair, red nose from drinking etc.) The Hobo archetype can easily slip into a minstrel character. While I adamantly disagree with the assertion that clowning is racist or started in racist ideals, it is very important to note that clowning, like pretty much everything, has racism in its past.
    8. I don't think anyone has ALWAYS wanted to be something. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a mermaid.

    Jordan feels like he could either be the main villain in a Disney movie or the hero's sidekick but not the hero themself because his dynamic towards the villain would be off?? I doubt this makes any sense. I just need to sleep

    There is actually a pretty fascinating and deep clown culture that goes back a very long time. My friend is very into this stuff and they often tell me about it and it's intriguing. It even has like subcultures, customs, and traditions and it's taken very seriously. Also characters like Pennywise and the Joker apparently has caused a lot of harm to the culture and there are groups trying to push away from that image.

    I am not or have ever been a clown, but that one point about having to be a happy person when youre in fact not, really stuck to me. I had been a hair dresser for a while and when you work with people who will just stay for hours sometimes, you have to engage with them. I worked in retail before and that sucked, but at the hair dresser the same sucky people are there, just for a lot longer. And when I was working at the hair dresser I also was going through a rough patch of my life, but I still had to be happy and smiles all day, because there was always someone present. People that get their hair done just really have no sympathy for their hair dresser being in a bad mood. Like, i still did my work perfectly, I just couldnt get myself to fake happiness all the time, and people started complaining to my boss about it.
    I just have all the sympathy for people in jobs where they have to put up a performance and I feel like as a clown your whole brand is being happy. If u show a bit of humanity youre out

I appreciate what's made him who he is without having to know what he's been through, no kind of suffering is justified or ok but I am glad he exists. He gives me hope that I can find more people like us, I live in a small town and sometimes it feels like I'm the only person in the world with common sense and any kind of will power to advance in life but it's just my immediate area I'm experiencing this in. There is more out there. There are cool people out there who can comprehend so much more than the people around you now. We can't give up, we just have to learn how to look.
