    subtropic lurker busting in- cotton is good if you're in a semi-arid climate where breathability is required for comfort. However, if you are from the tropics or subtropic you know very well that cotton absorbs a lot of water. Linen is much more better (lol grammar) in terms of breathability and summer wear. However, if you're in new york it should be fine.

    Oh, that print - and the dress - is going be lovely! Argh, I'm going to have to get it on Etsy once it comes out. Loved the short polyester rant - which I agree with since I dislike polyester as well. And your love for red shines through once again! Add some blue to the dress to complete the tricoleur! /jk Anyway, love the short video and will be awaiting your website showing up.

    The art alone was absolutely gorgeous! It is ridiculously easy to be too controlled and go over the top, so I am in awe with the art at the beginning. I was so happy to see a new upload, and to see on Instagram that it was going to be based somewhat on one of my favourite historical garments just makes my heart soar.

And also mentioning how great natural fibres truly are and how longer lasting it is! 😂 crying tears of joy! The Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth has a small self portrait of/by Vigee le Brun. The first time I saw it, it reminded me of her, the queen, the revolution, and all things of that period. After I had read all that interested me in our small school library, the librarian would get books for me from the upper school. One of the first, and the first biography I fell in love with, was about Vigee le Brun. It was un-illustrated . The next time I was in the library, the wonderful librarian surprised me by having a book of paintings of Marie Antoinette by V le B. The chemise portraits made a permanent imprint on my heart as the most beautiful thing any human could wear. I can't tell you how excited I am by this new project. P. S. Is there going to be a hat? Thank you!

      I absolutely adore Elisabeth-Louise Vigée Lebrun's works. My favourite painting by her, and probably my favourite painting at all, is at the Louvre Museum and is a self-portrait of her and her daughter in antiquity-inspired clothing. I fell in love with the softness and tenderness of the painting when I first saw it.

    Miss Banner, you made me laugh towards the end of this video. I always wash silk and wool before I make it up into garments.
    Because I don't like dry cleaning,. I find that both wool and silk tolerate cold water hand washing with gentle detergent or shampoo perfectly well 95% of the time.

  • @maywenearedhel
    @maywenearedhel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Best way to clean wool is to snow wash, ie take your wool and lay it flat in the snow. The moisture from the snow will absorb the dirt and grime from the wool without getting it wet. Then, once it's done, beat off the snow and bring it inside. The wool may grow slightly damp, but will be mostly dry, and CLEAN.!

    • @DodiTov
      @DodiTov 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You might investigate the concept of block sewing. In this way, you simply cut blocks of fabric and seam them, then use drawstrings to give the garment shape. One piece for the front, one for the back and two for the sleeves. Join at the neckline and hem all round. It's hard to explain, but simple to do. This would give you the look you want and is very easy on sewing skills, straight stitching and hemming.

    Last month I made a dress mockup out of polyester bed sheets ("They're absolute sh!t, please take them." - my mom). Machine sewing the stuff was nice, but dang did I sweat during every fitting! I'll use the rest of the fabric for bags (it ruffles very nicely, ideal for decorative panels!) and stick to cotton, wool, and high quality jersey for clothes.
    I'm looking forward to the "historically inspired blouse" project, whenever it'll materialize (just want to watch you using that pretty lace tbh), and of course I'll watch out for the second part of this video!

    Poor Marie Antoinette was damned if she did and damned if she didn't. It was traditional to blame the foreign spouse of the monarch as the source of all bad things (think Margaret of Anjou, Prince Albert, etc.), and Marie Antoinette was not politically savvy and did not know how to counter this. She certainly wasn't evil.
    And yes, polyester is the devil. (But not a 21st century invention.) But rayon can be wonderful: it is a manufactured fabric made of regenerated cellulose fibers from wood pulp. Of course, there is both good rayon and not-so-good rayon, and the process of making it can expose workers to dangerous chemicals if it is not carefully done. I prefer silk, of course, but cannot afford it most of the time.

      I'm not really versed in Peter Pan but it would make sense, because from 18th century onward, white dresses with sashes were common for little girls, long after the chemise itself fell out of fashion.

    Because everything is self taught for me when it comes to fashion and costume design (which is my career choice) I have been taking notes of fiber content more. At my last trip to joanns, I was trying to purchase a linen I could afford, I came upon a startling realization. Almost every fabric's fiber content was polyester! I am wee 17 year still discovering how the world works and seeing that really startled me. I pointed it out to my mom and she just nodded her head. She works in retail and knows this already because of the clothes she sells. But I still can't help but feel flabbergasted! 😨

      I think it's the "blend" part that lends itself to pilling - often it might be a continuous hard-to-break artificial fibre mixed with lower quality shorter bits of natural fibre - guess what happens under stress...

    It looks like this is going to be an amasing project so i look forward to future videos going throigh the construction etc of the piece. Honestly its making me realise that uh. If i ever get around to recreating one of my store bought summer tops i should probably do it in linin or something similar thatd breathable (I'd leave it as is,if not for the fact its of either poor construction or made of poor material so despite its beauty every time i go to wear it i spot new holes)

    Nice choice ! As someone pointed out, how contrary of you to work on heavy woolen things in the spring and light floaty things in the ( almost ) autumn !
    I also noticed, in looking at the Vigee Le Brun portrait, that Princess Diana's puzzling, overfloofy wedding dress must have been inspired by this Chemise ala Reine.... which seems like a bad portent, considering the controversy over the original and the historical outcome.
