  • Brown Hyenas are usually very timid animals… never would I have thought that they will show any kind of aggression towards leopards.
    Being a smaller female leopard, she is completely out-weighed by a much bigger Brown Hyena.
    As the hyena approached, he indicated his intentions by raising his hair.
    Unfortunately I lost the action near the end - not perfect but a worth-while moment to share.

    Hyena goes *poof*... xD I love the look of Brown and Striped Hyenas when they are bristeling their manes. They want to look intimidating, but I always just want to cuddle those fluffy oddballs... ^^

      @@sarban1653 they're currently near threatened according to IUCN statistics. They may not be endangered but they're one of Africa's rarest large predator

    this is a brown hyenas which is smaller then the spotted hyena but it still has a very powerful bite

      Brown hyenas are powerful animals in general. They can pick up carcasses that weigh as much or more than they do and carry them for miles at a slow run virtually non stop

    If you're thinking about making a "dog chases cat up a tree" joke, don't do that. Hyenas ain't dogs, they are a case of convergent evolution and are more closely related to cats. So it's more of a case of "stem-cat chase true cat up a tree" XD

    That hyena might look bigger than the leopard but it’s just hair. They’re about the same size

      Even tho this is a small leopard I still think it is probably a good 10, 15 pounds heavier. If they stand on 2 legs you can see it. This hyena is very thin underneath all that fur. Perhaps if someone were to wet the hyena up you'd see how much smaller it is.

      Male leopards maximum size around 70 - 85 kg.
      Brown hyena maximum weight will be around 60 - 65 kg.
      So leopards are big.

      Male spotted hyenas are smaller and weaker than female spotted hyenas. Male spotted hyenas can only intimidate female leopards.

      I think they are equally matched. But a hyena is more willing to take the risk and are bolder when it comes to fights. Hence the advantage goes to the female spotted hyena.

    This is a young female leopard though she is stronger than the hyena I guess she has never seen one before

      Leopards are peaceful animals. They don't like drama. There are thousands freely roaming leopards in Africa and you will never see them attacking people.

      Female leopards are easily intimidated. Male leopards are more aggressive and would've taken charge at the hyena.

      @@marksucksmybird4456 spotted are only a bit larger than browns. nevermind that browns are solitary by nature and commonly engage with leopards whereas spotted won't engage anything without its pack behind it. plenty leopards have been fucked up by a brown. that leopard didn't want to risk injury for no reason so she wisely escaped up a tree.

      Big males often successfully defend their kills from two or more spotted hyena's so yes a single brown hyena can never kill a male leopard.
      Here's a video of a big male leopard in Kenya who's not intimidated at all by a hyena clan. It's literally the other way compared to this video as he descended a tree despite so many hyena's around in the open.       Brown hyenas have bone crushing jaws. Large male leopards can kill them, but they wont risk injuries or broken bones.
