Chopin. Raindrop Prelude Op. 28 No. 15. As with all his compositions, Chopin did not give the name to this one himself - rather it had been given to the piece by Chopin's lover, George Sand, while the two were staying at a huge Carthusian monastery in Majorca, an Island off the coast of Spain. According to legend, the monastery (being stuck between rocks and sea) allowed wind and rain inside, causing Chopin's already poor health to deteriorate. Chopin spent a lot of time listening to the repetitive drip-drip-drip of the rain outside, which is said to have inspired the repetitive Ab note throughout the piece. Hope you enjoy this touching performance by SPQ - I hope it's not raining wherever you are, and that you have a beautiful Thursday ♥

A week ago today my Grandad passed away. This was playing in his room at the hospice when we found him and I couldn't bring myself to listen to it again until now.
I'd been keeping it together fairly well and decided to brave a listen. I absolutely lost it as soon as the main melody hit.
but sadness passes and good memories remain and I'm sure I'll be back here to listen quite often!
I learnt so much from him, I'm going to continue doing my damn best for him. I miss you so much Grandad!

This piece always reminds me of my dear piano teacher Mrs Reid. I used to limp my way through it week after week, making mistakes in all the same places (as you can tell I wasn't exactly talented in the piano department). But Mrs Reid never ever once showed one ounce of irritation or displeasure. She was unfailingly encouraging and kind, and always had a supportive word no matter how badly the lesson went. She also showed me much empathy and support when I was going through a difficult time in my life. I was truly privileged to have her as a teacher and if I could be half as patient with my own students (I tutor - though not piano LOL) I'd be happy. She must be long, long gone by now, hope she's still playing in some other dimension and reaping the rewards of her kindness and compassion on earth. RIP Mrs Reid and thank you.

Literally by far the best piece of advertisement to exist in my opinion. Take away the fact that it’s for a video game, that halo Believe ad series was phenomenal. Each part, with the human covenant war veterans, the museum, the making of the diorama, the explanation they give to all of it, it just makes you feel emotions, more so forces them out of you. I’ve showed that run of ads to people who’ve literally never played a single game of halo and know nothing about it, and each time the person I show is brought to some level of an emotional reaction, often confused because they don’t know why. The raw emotion, nostalgia, and artistry paired with devotion that went into those trailers will always keep them an entire level above any ad for any other thing to have had an ad ever.

If you play them on a piano, G# and Ab sound the same (they are called enharmonic equivalents).
But an Db major chord is made of the note Db (root note), F (major third) and Ab (perfect fifth). You can’t use G# because Ab is the fifth degree of your scale, while G# would be the fourth degree (Gb) raise a tone sharp (which would be a very weird thing to use right ?) !
Here, the piece is in Db major so the notes are
Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb C and back to Db so this is actually an Ab and not a G# !
Can you see why it wouldn’t make sense to use - Db Eb F Gb G# Bb C Db - instead ?
As a rule of thumb, if you are using a mode of the major scale (or one of three minor scales), each note name should appear once and none twice.
TL;DR If your music is tonal, you need to think about what the note represents whitin the key and the context to know which enharmonic to use ;)

this piece is probably the first and only piece i've ever experienced...whatever any one would call this, but every time i listen to this i just have this...mental film playing.
0:00 - 1:43 a wide field, vivid green grass, strewn with large patches of various wildflowers, slight slopes here and there, a smallish building or two (shed like buildings i guess).
1:43 - 4:44 a gradually strengthening wind blows in, looking towards the wind, seeing dark clouds quickly covering the sky. 2:26 (and various other points with this impact of notes) bright flash of lightning, loud crash of thunder signals a sudden downpour of rain. try to find shelter in a close by shed, helping to cover mostly, with few dripping leaks. walls creak from the wind and rain audibly splatters but holds.
4:44 - 5:40 the wind calms, rain lightens to a misting, heading out to find light grey clouds, slowly drifting off to uncover a darker blue sky (few hours time pass) the field now has a shine and somewhat new vigor to it in a way.
it might be weird but yeah...not much to really say about it other than that

3 years ago, I tried the piano and really liked it, then after a year got a little bored but still played, then several months ago, I found this channel, and I am glad this existed, I have been inspired by you and your La Campanella, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 and 6, and Moonlight Sonata performance, and inspired my friend to play a few months ago. I am really glad you have played these and hope you're channel continues to keep on growing. I love this channel and the piano. And now every time I go to Costco, I always look for a piano on display and play Turkish March on that piano. You are the best, and I love classical music and so does my dad. I really want to play what you have played. I've even tried that glissando in Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 and learned how to do it without injuring my hand too much. I've tried La Campanella and Moonlight Sonata 3rd movement because of you. Maybe in a few years I'll try and learn the entire thing. I've watched your videos so many times I can't remember the first video that was recommended to me, I think it was the top ten most difficult pieces. How do you pronounce the name of your channel?

Every time I see you post a Chopin piece, it makes me so happy. It reminds me of my favorite video game, Eternal Sonata, which is a huge reason why I love classical music today. It centers around the idea of a dream Chopin has on his deathbed, tells his life story between game chapters, and features him as a playable character facing moral quandaries in a fantasy world. It's weird, and I love it, and Chopin has a special place in my heart because of it, and I love seeing you play his pieces!

One thing I've always found fascinating with the piano, and all instruments for that matter, that two people can play the same song, the exact same way, even with the exact same instrument, and come out with a unique product.

This song brings back some good memories of watching Big O with my friends...
This song was used in Big O as the song Instro (a robot pianist at a piano bar) teaches Dorothy (the protagonist's robot companion) how to play it. I melody searched it and at least sightread it the same night i watched the episode. The episode's name is "Legacy of Amadeus", spoils pretty much nothing about the rest of the series, definitely worth a watch, and I'm glad you chose this song of the (hundreds? close to 100?) Chopin Preludes to put on your channel.
I love your classical content, and I'll definitely keep more up-to-date with that side of your stuff.
