      Shoei advertised as a intermediate oval, purchased too much pressure on my forehead. Wore several over the years Shoei it was less than total comfort., i didn’t get a break in the price. But to each it’s own. Glad you have had a satisfying experience

    AWESOME video. I spoke with SHOEI on the NEW SHOEI RF1400 and asked why does it fit tighter. The Rep. explained to me that he suggests that people stick to the same current size that you would wear with the RF 1200 to the RF 1400. Because it will break in in a few weeks (if it causes uncomfortable pressure with pain that's no good). He explained that the reason for the tighter fit is from the new redesigned cheek pads , they were designed to fit tight and snug, they wanted to give the rider a more quiet ride and reduce wind from entering through the bottom and your neck.But he added that the good news is , Shoei still uses the same shell sizes , so if the XS is too tight , you can get smaller cheek pads and make it a Small , and if a Small is too large you can get larger cheek pads to make it an XS. same with M -L , L-XL. But when you go to a larger size for comfort on your cheeks the gap from the top of your head and helmet increases also. This is the info the SHOEI rep gave to me. Just wanted to share and hope it helps a little.

    I own multiple RF-1200's, so when the RF-1400 came out earlier this year, I bought one. Absolutely love it. They are a bit more snug than the 1200.

    Well my round head didn't last very long with the RF1400. Usually I can wear intermediate oval sizes, but not this time. Bought an XL, too loose. Traded for a large and around town it was great, went on a few long rides and the pressure on my temples gave me a headache. Too late to return it so now I'm trying to sell a 700 dollar helmet for half price. Bought an Arai Quantum X and couldn't be happier with it. Just be aware if you have a round head you may have issues as we don't have very many options

    I bought this exact helmet today. Put a quick 100 miles on it. Very quiet, noticed less buffeting and very stable. Came from a Neotec of 7 years and a RF 1100 before that. Now I have to mount my Sena 20S tomorrow. So far I really like it!

    I picked up a new Shoei RF 1400 in white (because that is the color Kevin recommended) a couple of months ago. A lot better quality than my LS2 Valiant II. I thought I would miss the drop down tinted visor from my LS2, but I just wear my sunglasses when needed. The Shoei allows for you to wear your sunglasses with no additional pressure pressing onto your glasses or face and my sunglasses provide a better tinted view than any type of drop down tinted visor, with full tint at the bottom of my peripheral view. To me, wearing the standard clear visor on my helmet and a good pair of quality polarized sunglasses, like some Oakley's, is the best set up for protection and visual acuity/quality (with no distortion) and there is no need to ever change out your visor except to replace it when damaged. I mean chances are when you get off your bike during the day you will always need your sunglasses anyways, right? I had to order a reflective USA flag sticker to place on the back of the helmet because my numerous attempts to purchase an MCRider decal were a failure. Guess they are for members only. Although, now I see a special link to purchase them for a short period of time. Hmmmmm.... maybe I will be able to get one after all. Also... I read a few reviews complaining of the way the visor is manipulated up and down from the middle instead of the side. To me this is an improved design. It places equal forces onto the hinges by articulating the visor from the center. It is very easy to operate and the locked detents are very solid and sturdy. The Shoei RF 1400 is a great helmet and I have NO regrets with my purchase, especially since I purchased it at Cycle Gear in Bedford, TX and received a 15% discount by showing my receipt from my recent 3-Day Riding Academy Course I took back in May at Texas Harley Davidson. WooHoo!!! Thanks again Kevin for all that you do and for the education you provide. I am always listening to your words when I am driving my Jeep. I currently do not own a motorcycle. I rent them here and there and test drive them at the Harley dealerships. As soon as I purchase my new Road Glide I will become an active member. Cheers!

    Things I like about it:
    1. Centre lock on the visor. Easy to use, and doesn’t flex the visor like the old one did (less faffing around to get rid of whistles)
    2. Better ventilation, especially on the chin vent.
    3. Better aerodynamics - easier to do head checks at speed (not as good as the x-spirit 3, but good improvement nontheless)
    Things I don’t like:
    1. Weak detents at defogging positions (it’s practically nonexistent)
    2. Clunky mechanism of the chin vent (none of my previous Shoeis felt this cheap)
    3. Less secure hold for the cheek pads to the helmet rim (less points of contact compared to before). The snap buttons are not as tight too.
    Things I’m on the fence about:
    1. The visor is way harder to put on/ take off now (might be more secure in case of an accident)
    2. The two top vents on the ridge. Could be designed better, but it’s okay i guess.

    @radrock6249 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You can't go wrong with a Shoei. Quality, fittment, you can also custom fit with their variety of padding. One thing people often overlook is quietness, less wind noise. It Makes for keeping your hearing as you get older, as I've found out. How much is my head worth? That is what i ask myself when it comes to the price of a good, quality helmet. $500-$700 is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Great review.

    nice video Kevin, thanks! Never understood people complaining about double D ring system and why some people find it is so difficult to deal with. Some years ago was renting bike and had HJS helmet with the "flip up" sun shield, but didn't really like it, because I am wearing glasses, which means I had to deal with three different layers: my glasses, sun shield and the normal visor, that combo bends the sun light not always in a good way. Really recommend testing the helmet before buying one. Kevins have started the video with very valuable words about the fact he knows by experience that Shoei helmets fit his head.

    Kevin, That Shoei is a great looking helmet, but If I remember correctly, you recommended a white helmet because you said they are the most visible to other drivers which I tend to agree with. I'm sure that great looking RF1400 made you say to heck with that white helmet stuff.

    In keeping with what was discussed concerns the size of the RF 1400 Shoei helmet: I have always owned Shoei helmets size Large. I purchased an RF 1400 helmet, size Large at a local Cycle Gear outlet and rode for a day. During and after the ride, my head ached because the helmet was too small. I took the helmet back and the Cycle Gear manager very happily replaced my new helmet with the next size up which is extra-large. The helmet fits beautifully, and I am so glad that Cycle Gear stands behind their products in support of their customers. I love the RF 1400 and although I had been waiting for the release of the Neotec 3, I am so glad that I opted for this helmet instead. Listen to what MCrider has to say about the size of the helmet. He is spot on!

My slight dyslexia makes that double D buckle a nuisance . Have an issue with it and it took a year for me to notice it , a quarter inch gap in the visors closed position . A few months back in heavy drizzle water actually came through and hit my cheek , I was dumbfounded . I got a work around from Klim and all I need to do is adjust the visor mount .
    Saw the F9 video and helmets will hopefully have to conform to a higher level of real road offroad safety . We only have one neck and one skull . ATGATT .

    I watched and read a number of reviews when the RF-1400 came out. Most (not MC Rider’s) mentioned the movement of the visor release from the left side to the center as a big miss. I didn’t check one out in person but based on that and a slight increase in weight with little difference in wind noise I decided to buy a RF-1200 while they were still available and I saved about $100 by purchasing a soon to be discontinued model.

Use the double velcro booster pads in the recess and after trim the cover that covered the recess before to fit around the speakers and you'll be fine. Not much difference between the bold and black edition besides speaker size and honestly I'd be just as happy with spending less on the bold one and 35mm speakers.. doesnt have much bass response but for what it can do I'm happy with it. Wasn't interested in the SHOEI at first because it seems to be the one everyone gets. but after trying ARAIs and AGVs, the RF-1400 felt the most secure and comfortable. it was not even difficult to decide after trying it. only complaint is that the store did not have any visors available and i haven't been able to find them online.

    I have the RYD currently (RF-SR in the US I believe), I wear prescription glasses and I find having to manage fogging between my glasses, the main visor and a drop-down sun visor is just too much hassle, so I prefer not having the drop-down one - I just wear my prescription sunglasses when riding during the day. It also makes for a lighter and simpler helmet and it's generally cheaper, so all wins across the board. I will consider the NXR 2 (UK equivalent of the RF1400, Shoei's first to meet the new ECE 22.06 standard) if anything happens to my RYD. Also welcome to the XL brigade, generally there's not much difference between L and XL except for cheek pads, Shoei helmets have very modular internal padding anyway so I'm sure you'll be able to adjust it if you find it breaks in 'too much' via thicker cheek pads.

    Bought one Jan 3rd or so: Summertime: the visor will NOT stay open 1/2" or so to keep bugs out but air coming in ( on a 1200GS with the small windscreen low above 50 mph). If you open it further, bugs get funneled right down the large slots for eyeglass temple arms and you have a live bug near your ear. I use small carrots that I eat to wedge the visor open, if I lose a carrot, no litter, no cost. With the visor down, latched or unlatched you can NOT open the vents enough to feel a breeze. I love the pinlock anti fog feature and the very wide view and the helmet in general. To get a replacement shield in the spring was a problem as the helmets were here in the US but the spares were not. The shield is harder to click on after a good wash than my RF1100 shield. Would buy again. 15,000 miles so far. Montana and Idaho were 109.5 deg. F this summer, shield was closed then with water under my leathers and helmet.

    Concerning proper fit, it is my humble opinion that you should pop the cheek pads out of your helmet and make sure that the crown fits properly. Most upper end helmet manufactures will give you plenty of options for dialing in the cheek pad fit.

  • @michaelparker2933
    @michaelparker2933 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the exact same helmet with the dark smoke visor and agree with all your comments. I also had the 1200 and agree that the 1400 is a tighter fit but I did not have to change size as I was already an XL. I have a couple of observations that I would add to yours. First; I find the 1400 to be a more stable helmet at freeway speeds with less buffeting from the wind. This makes for a more relaxed and less tiring ride in my opinion. Second; I find the center visor lock and the vent controls to be difficult to locate and use while in motion with gloves on. I haven't looked at the 1200 and 1400 side by side to see what the physical difference is but I find it frustrating when I can't get the top vents open or closed with one hand. The center visor lock is particularly frustrating for me. I'm hoping that this will become easier as the controls "loosen up" and I get more familiar with the helmet. I enjoyed your video....Thanks.

    Nice! I purchased the same helmet with the same graphics as yours from Revzilla. This is my first helmet so I have nothing to compare it to. I honestly do not like wearing a helmet as it makes me feel confined but from a safety standpoint I'll try to suffer through it.
    Mine fit pretty tight initially but taking it off and on repeatedly at the two day BRC in the hot sun first of July really broke it in for an easy off an on experience. Fastening the chin strap was pretty challenging for a noobie like myself also. It does have some serious air circulation and its easy to open and close the vents with the gloves I use, Lee Parks SumoR gloves are fantastic for manipulating small details. My only complaint which is user error I presume is it fogs up. Thanks for another great video!

    I have a shoei GT Air 2 but I am considering getting a RF-1400 because of some of the things you mentioned. Plus, I almost l never use the drop down visor, which makes it sort of a waste to even have it there. The only thing is that I am kind of spoiled by the ease of the ratchet straps. I've literally never used double D rings before, since I'm a fairly new rider and this was my first helmet.
    I'm personally not a fan of tinted visors. I tend to feel a big sleepy when it feels too dark. The brighter the better. I'd probably just put on a clear visor and carry sunglasses in case I'm ever in a situation where the sun is directly in front of me, but since i mostly commute, I'm usually riding away from the direction of the sun, which is mostly why I've never actually needed the drop down visor on my GT Air.
    Excellent review. I may have to convince the wife to allow me to buy a new helmet, but we'll see.

Also the RF-1400 is terrible in heat (100+) with a windscreen and terrible with fogging. Can't run the pinlock since I have a 45 minute commute at 1am. I have had the RF fog at 80 degrees with 50% humidity. I joked to my wife the RF must stand for really foggy. I haven't been terribly impressed with mine.
