The first time I ever heard the term “partner” with a same-sex couple was in high school, and to this day I do not understand why same-sex couples don’t just say boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife. Obviously for gender non-binary folk, “partner” is probably the term that makes most sense, but still… if you’re married, “spouse” would also be a great option! 🏳️🌈❤️

The fact that you have to declare your sexual orientation sucks but you handled it well. I used to call my ex wife my partner and it confused some people. Many asked if we were sisters or even twins which was hilarious back then. I got sick of having to define who she was to me though bc we got married but it was prior to gay marriage being legal so then had to qualify to some that we got married in front of a minister but not legally. We never went back to legalize it bc it would have crushed my disability income checks and I couldn’t afford to be financially dependent on her entirely. It’s so miserable having people make dumb assumptions or having to explain and then feel like I’m over explaining or feel violated that I had to share something that’s private to most strangers. Sometimes I would just say she’s my “friend” and leave it at that. Lol. Unless it’s a border crossing or passport checking/security type of things it’s noones biz unless you feel like sharing. I was always open and out but in our current climate it’s scarier.

Agree with you, I do this too sometimes and say partner or spouse, because sometimes it doesn’t feel safe as a women to announce to a stranger that my wife is my wife. But it feels so much better to call her by what she is.

The first time I ever heard the term “partner” with a same-sex couple was in high school, and to this day I do not understand why same-sex couples don’t just say boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife. Obviously for gender non-binary folk, “partner” is probably the term that makes most sense, but still… if you’re married, “spouse” would also be a great option! 🏳️🌈❤️

(Yes, I get you can say those things jokingly, and I think depending on the circumstance, tone, and audience, it could get a chuckle, but there are a lot of men that say it more as if their wife is an object of ownership.)
The fact that you have to declare your sexual orientation sucks but you handled it well. I used to call my ex wife my partner and it confused some people. Many asked if we were sisters or even twins which was hilarious back then. I got sick of having to define who she was to me though bc we got married but it was prior to gay marriage being legal so then had to qualify to some that we got married in front of a minister but not legally. We never went back to legalize it bc it would have crushed my disability income checks and I couldn’t afford to be financially dependent on her entirely. It’s so miserable having people make dumb assumptions or having to explain and then feel like I’m over explaining or feel violated that I had to share something that’s private to most strangers. Sometimes I would just say she’s my “friend” and leave it at that. Lol. Unless it’s a border crossing or passport checking/security type of things it’s noones biz unless you feel like sharing. I was always open and out but in our current climate it’s scarier.
