Andy Kim wrote this, and was on the backing vocals. The #1 song of 1969. You could get it on the back of a cereal box!

This was the #1 selling record of 1969. On summer nights, our whole neighborhood used to play the record on a player outside and have a dance party. My brother had the version that you could cut out from the back of a cereal box - great times!

There is a stereo version of Sugar Sugar by the Archies as it was a #1 hit on the Pop Singles Chart and is considered the biggest selling Bubblegum hit of all time! The second biggest selling Bubblegum hit is by Tommy Roe and is titled Dizzy, also a #1 hit!

  • @RaynorBear

... this was originally a music segment from the Saturday morning TV show "The Archie Comedy Hour" on CBS-TV in 1969. Filmation was the production company that made the show and was Hanna-Barbera's biggest competitor for limited-animation Saturday morning cartoons. The first season of "Scooby-Doo" (Hanna-Barbera) debuted the same year as "The Archie Comedy Hour" (this was the second season of "Archie", as the first show, "The Archie Show", debuted on CBS-TV in 1968). In 1968, "The Archie Show" brought in unheard of ratings for a Saturday morning cartoon, sometimes surpassing the ratings of shows in prime-time. Part of the success of the show was due to the music. The Archies music group was a creation of Don Kirshner, licensed through Archie Comics, with lead vocals by Ron Dante, backing vocals by Toni Wine, and a fantastic group of studio musicians known as The Wrecking Crew. Production and songwriting talents included the well-known Jeff Barry as well as Andy Kim. It is not a surprise that because of the success of this Filmation show that Hanna-Barbera would try to compete with it the following year... and thus "Scooby-Doo" was born, and while that show did not feature any music numbers in their first season, there was musical numbers in the second season of "Scooby-Doo" with vocals by singer-songrwiter Austin Roberts. So yes... you are correct about the similarity in artwork and styles.

This was featured in a Saturday morning cartoon show called "the Archies" - which this clip is from. They also had a lot of comic books that came out that were very popular too. The girl who is kissing the boys & turning them into different creatures was "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch." She also had her own segments (& if I recall her very own comics that the other characters were apart of.)
As a 70s kid, I loved the Archies TV show & I had a lot of their comics. I loved Sabrina, as well as the other characters & I have ALWAYS loved this song. It is just so happy, sweet (why it's called Bubble gum music) & innocent. There is nothing dirty, nasty, negative about it. Oh what the world of music used to (mostly) be. - (Don't get me wrong, I still love my raunchy, naughty 80s music - but that was still done with a spirit of "fun & sexy & what can we naughtily get away with as bad children" - vs. more SERIOUS, nasty, mean, vulgar music that has come out since.

If you were going to rollerskate to an Archies song, the most logical choice would have been their song "Bicycles, Rollerskates, and You." And yes, they DID have a song with this title. It was on the same album with "Sugar, sugar."

I am fortunate to have been around in the 60s and 70s; the cartoons, the movies and the music/songs (and D.Js). The great genuine and innocent songs and music, including singer-song writers and bands. I am happy this young person appreciates it has an open-mind to it. I am so taken to a place 45+ years back in time and appreciate not only the music, but the 'acknowledgement' of the pure artistry of the time. Thank you!!!

This cartoon series had nothing to do with Scooby Doo which was Hanna Barbera and Archie was Filmation. Designed by totally different people. The song was part of the bubble gum pop music industry, studio musicians with " ringers" performing to playback on Ed Sullivan and Where The Action Is. The bands were 1910 Fruitgum Co. The Ohio Express, any and all of the Kasenetz Kasz produced pop groups. Josie and the Pussycats were an Archie Comics spin off but were a Hanna Barbera cartoon, higher quality production and had different songwriters.

The Archie’s were a originally a comic book and then a cartoon series, they became a band to cash in on the popularity of the cartoon versions of The Beatles, The Osmonds and The Jackson 5. The White Haired Girl in the kissing booth is Sabrina The Teen-Age Witch which explains why every time she kissed someone they magically changed.

The characters were based on the Archie comic book characters and this show spun off another animated series "Josie and the Pussycats". I am not sure, but suspect that Scooby Doo was developed due to the popularity of that genre with pre-teen cartoon watchers. The animation does look similar! There's a modern day TV series called "Riverdale" that is also based on the Archie comic book series. This song, Sugar Sugar, was a big hit in 1969 and got all the kids on the floor for open skating at the roller rink! Lol! Good memories.

Considered by many to be the ultimate bubble-gum song.
As for the cartoon? Dreadful. It was a major trend in the Saturday morning cartoons to cut corners with the very limited animation. Some were even worse than this. They would indeed reuse cels from other cartoons as well as the cartoonists...thus the resemblance.

Ignore the crappy animation - that was never a strong suit of The Archies. Just enjoy the song and how it builds on itself - it might be easier to watch it be danced to on American Bandstand. Even the cool young adults are like, Uhk, This song, but somewhere in the middle they are all chugging way to it and having a great time.th-cam.com/video/9FNGEz8U_T4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=A_7KJ1LpyNQK5RFe&t=63
