Compassion, dignity and respect in health care

Compassion 'has to be our number one priority' says Hiro Tanaka, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
We spoke to him about the value he places on compassion in delivering care, and also spoke to a range of staff members from the hospital about what compassion means to them and how they incorporate it in their day to day work. We also hear from some patients about the difference that compassionate care has made to them during their time in hospital.

time? time to listen? how much time do you really have when you have a patient in DKA, another critically ill in respiratory distress, another in acute pain, another needing immediate discharge to make room for another patient coming out of theatre? maybe it will do the nurse well to sit with another patient for 5 minutes make her a cup of tea and talk about how your other patients are actually dying. these are ideal goals but the real question is are they making it happen? the nurses have enough of compassion. its the doctors that need to practice more of it maybe.

In our area it is just the opposite. Doctors are great but nurses, cnas, scrubs delight in taking away a man's dignity. Men here are 2nd class citizens and treated with no respect. After many humiliating experiences I can truthfully say female support staff think male patients are pieces of meat. I myself will always ask for and feel for my dignity I should be able to receive male caregivers for anything where I have to be exposed.

Dignity is making sure the customer has their modesty accommodated without harassment. That includes male patients being accommodated when they ask for all male surgical teams and intimate private healthcare need just as women get when asking for all female care takers. This should be a given without ridicule.

I was just a little shocked when the sister said she "dealt" with a patient. Language is important when role modelling and influencing compassion. I was going to use this as a teaching aid however as I talk about language and the mentality of compassion it important to recognise we do not deal with people we care for them.

Why keep turning up and changing a dressing when it is clearly being caused by an infection? Treat the cause not the symptom.
