  • In this video I go over the reasons why I replaced my Steinberg UR-RT4 interface with the Audient EVO 16. I cover what problems it solved, and what I think of the interface overall.

I recently purchased an EVO SP8 (the EVO 16's expansion module) as an ADAT expansion for my Apollo Twin. It's the best $450 I've ever spent on audio gear. I'm bringing mic audio from the SP8 into the Apollo Twin over ADAT with Neve 1073 and LA-2A plugins directly on the inserts for these channels inside the Twin. It's the cheapest way to add 8 mic preamps to any Apollo interface. Unfortunately it won't work for the entry level Arrow or Solo.

I still regret my super old EMU1616 PCI interface, it was so good!

GIVING UP my apogee element 46 for the Evo 16 !! wish the audient control software would let you control the master out with the controls on the keyboard, like the apogee.

Huh I never noticed that but just tried and you're right. I can control the "DAW" mix but not the main output itself. I always sit within arms reach of it so it hasn't come up for me yet. Maybe put in a suggestion to Audient for a feature request?

@@HiTH-camImDad That's the biggest reason i've used apogee. Especially late at night and you don't want to wake everyone up. Keyboard master out control is just so easy .. but gonna rewire my studio so the audient sits on my desk under the computer monitor

I love my EVO 8 and have no need for an EVO 16, but DAMN do I want one...

I'm really liking it. The set and forget aspect of it, and numbers along with dials are the selling points for me.

The Audient sounds much noisier to me-possibly because it requires “more gain” than the Steinberg.
I wish they (Audient) made a version of the ASP-800/880 with 32GB float and the gain wizard features.
Also, the Rupert Neve aspect of the Steinberg’s circuit design is stated to be the (optional?) transformer. It would be nice to hear what the input signal sounds like with the transformers engaged.
The “Rupert Neve” aspect of the Steinberg is an obvious attempt at marketing gimmickry, especially since he probably has nothing to do with the actual construction of the transformers. It would be interesting to pop the hood and see what the transformers look like, and whom they are actually manufactured by-unless the transformer “sound” is being produced by dsp, or some other means of cheaply introducing transformer-like sonic qualities to the signal.

I like mixers. Everything is a slider, pot, or button right next to me and I just reach over and give it a nudge. The problem is the mid to low priced mixers are two channel stereo out through USB only on most of them. Also the drivers are crap. They still sell the Yamaha mixers that use Steinberg drivers for ASIO/windows USB driver. It literally freezes my desktop in windows 10/11 pro if I set the latency sampling lower than 128. Anything below 512 to 256 causes non-ASIO like playing a video through Firefox, to glitch and skip and freeze.
As for the gain of your Steinberg the Rupert Neive transformers give a very hot signal and can handle higher input as well.
As for Audient, their drivers are usually good but this is a new software based interface and is still in Beta mode.
Windows Sleep also causes tons of problems if you have upgraded to windows 11 from windows 10. It crashes my computer when I wake up the system and have multiple audio devices plugged in through USB.

If you're looking for a good analog mixer that will output multi channel for Reaper, check out the Soundcraft MTK series. We use one to run the PA, in ears for live practices, and to Reaper for recordings. It's a really nice piece of gear.

i have the ur816c. I had some glitching like that but it was fixed by wiggling cables - not ideal I know! However, the UR816c (and I assume your model too) is underpowered when it comes to DSP. It cannot run midi and onboard dsp effects at the same time. I never ever use any DSP effects as it makes my unit unusable. It's still a good 16in interface and was definitely a bargain but you can quickly find where they cut corners. I wouldn't buy it again were it stolen.

I really wished their support would have gotten back to me, because up until then I was a big fan of the interface and my previous 2 channel. But if I can't even get a reply, and the problems are more than an annoyance, it was time to move on.

Yeah it seems like it. The software isn't very good, their fx are kind of bizarre, and the transformers didn't seem to really do anything.
