"Anything you do, let it come from you. Then it will be new. Give us more to see." RIP Stephen, and thank you for giving us more to see for all these years ❤
To me, this is Sondheim's masterpiece. It truly is a one of a kind masterpiece. No other musical addresses the worth of the artist, the process, and the beauty of art as much as this show. Brilliantly through-composed not just for the sake of imitating opera, but each minute of music sets a mood. There are no cheap gimmicks here. No awkward pauses for pre-paid jokes by writers who don't care. No juke-box songs. THIS is what a musical should be. Full of heart, soul, and art.
I never "really" understood the meaning of this song until one morning when I was listening to it on headphones as I rode to work. My wife and I had just separated after 24 years of marriage and I had been depressed. After really hearing the song I realized that we were both moving on, and that we were doing so for all the right reasons. What an epiphany! Tears started rolling down my cheeks. And things just seemed to fit together better after that.
Wow. You really got the song! And it’s helped me as an artist to “move on”, trusting my instincts wherever it goes. “Don’t worry if your vision is new. Let others make that decision. They usually do.” So right on the mark!
When it first played on Broadway, they noted that there were many, many people who sat there quietly crying after last curtain. I know because I was one of the. As much as anyone would like to limit this to art and being an artist, this is so much more as noted by so many here. This is about living your life. And what happens when you think you're stuck. Life is about choices and looking for new experiences. Stop worrying where you're going, you've gone. Just keep moving on. Trust that your instinct will lead you to where you need to be.
"When it first played on Broadway, they noted that there were many, many people who sat there quietly crying after last curtain. I know because I was one of them" So was I, even after the Finale of Act 1.... Everyone was trying to not look at each other, trying to hide their tears....
Around 1:50 Bernadette Peters' button flashes in the light perfectly in time with the music, right after: "Stop worrying if your vision is new." Nothing beats live performance!
Anyone else notice the moment at 2:28 where this soft, warm smile just washes across her face as she hears him describe everything she wanted George to say he saw in her? It's transcendent acting on her part.
I can't believe that someone actually disliked this clip. Mandy and Bernadette at their best. A fabulous and passionate performance from two great artists. If you don't like this you don't like theater.
I always come back to this song when I sometimes feel a bit lost and unsure of things and this song always reminds me to keep moving forward and to move on. New and better things honestly await you.
Sitting here at 4 in the morning, writing on a paper, stuck in a course of study I'm just starting to realize might not be right for me - not 5 minutes ago I made up my mind to just leave it. Stop this experience here and start something new... And all of sudden this song comes up in my (amazing, Lin-Manuel Miranda crafted) playlist. Yeah. Time to move on. I hope this means I am making the right choice.
For me, it's a tossup between Sunday in the Park and Company as to which of Sondheim's shows it the most emotionally-wrenching; both get me every time. I remember listening to a podcast interview with Mandy Patinkin about Sunday in the Park a few years ago, and even a couple of decades later he couldn't get through talking about this song without crying.
The beginning of this song is SO similar to the Baker and his wife's conversation at the very end of Into the Woods. Dear lord, this song is perfect. Then again, the show itself is a masterpiece.
The authenticity this song evokes confirms our tears journeys take connect our emotions into the unifying cosmos of the ocean. How much our life matters. Thank you for allowing my soul to sing with you, infinantly Divine, I am healed in the feeling of its presence and power and rewarded with love overflowing.
I've listened to this song about 10 times today. I am having such a hard time moving on from so many things in my past. I just want to move forward, but its like my feet are cemented.
SO beautiful. I cannot watch this musical without dissolving into tears a few times. This is the moment when I just give in and let the tears flow. It is my "inspiration" song, whenever I feel I've lost my way...
A late Rest In Peace to Mr Sondheim, this song has come to mean even more to me now that I’m older than when I first heard it as a kid. “I’ve nothing to say that hasn’t been said” “Said by you though, George” Such a stunning line, among many others in this number, really is something anyone wanting to be creative needs to hear
I think the true magnificence of this number is how it targets each of George's terms in his mantra "Order. Design. Tension. Balance. Harmony," not only in song structure/style but also in lyrical content.
The lyrics of this song are so insightful. It speaks to the fears of all artists (what do I have to say that’s not been said already). It soothes their souls by telling them to just move on. Keep moving on. It’s good advice for everyone. Don’t wallow in the past. Move on.
As a writer, I totally understand this song. I just discovered this afternoon, that I didn't get the writing residency fir which I had applied. After a few angry tears, I watched this clip and was re-inspired to keep moving on with my writing. Just because I didn't get it this year, doesn't mean that I won't get it next year. Onwards and Upwards
It was comforting reading the comment section. I watched the recorded 1986 SATPWG and this scene got me sobbing at 1 in the morning. I thought it was just me. It feels swell knowing everybody else had a bit of an emotional wakeup call with this song.
I love this musical. These lyrics mean so much to me, but it kills me that they don't prod at my emotions the same way plenty of other, fairly thoughtlessly written musical theatre platitudes manage to. I find it hard to connect to this emotionally, even though it's still the best musical theatre there is. One day I hope I really can feel the beauty that I know I see.
@DivaBehavior My parents actually saw this cast live in 1984, and told me it was absolutely amazing show. I have the show on DVD, but I agree that seeing it live would have been amazing!! ^_^
I just found out I got a role of 'nobody' in a production of a musical that we're doing at my university. My total singing time is 27 seconds. I don't think I've ever been more disappointed by anything in my life, especially that I was literally called back to audition for the main character. I'm devastated and it may be silly little thing for the most people, but I was really hoping for something more. Something that matters. This feeling brought me to this song. This is a song that me as an artist need right now, in a moment like this one.
@DLM629 I think you just nailed it on the head. Artists create so that people can connect to their work and take a little bit away with them. It is such a gorgeous moment and with times always seeming so uncertain, I think a lot of us can relate.
I can't believe I accidentally hit 'dislike'! :O Forgive me fans of this video. I shamefully gave this video the first 'negative' mark. :( I saw her in concert last month, and while she did not sing THIS song, I own the DVD that this came from and it touched my heart. (Also, this musical helped me get an A+ on my paper about Seurat. :) "Color and Light". :D When I feel depressed, this song makes me feel better.

Found this comment after 23 year marriage ending - half my life. Thanks for sharing.

Me, too, I was there. I still tear up just watching this on video.

P. W. Literally just now yes
What do you mean acting? She is literally an angel. 😇😁

Best Sondheim song ever. Always makes me cry, think of my life and forgive myself.
This song is a blinding series of truths.
The way he sings “and the colour of your hair”….
Rest in peace, our maestro. You will be missed.
Even after 40 years, every time I hear them sing this song it makes me emotional….
I was lucky enough to see this production on Broadway. I still get tears watching it. What a night of musical theater it was.
"I would be so pleased" gets me every damn time.

Whatever happened, remember:
“The choice may have been mistaken. The choosing was not.”
Love seeing this 3 years later and seeing comments from recently too. I hope you are happy with your choice. This show changed my life.

Thank you Sondheim for all your gifts. You will never be forgotten. You have changed so many lives.

I'm weeping at my desk at work, just beautiful ;-D

One of the best musical numbers of all time performed by two of the best singers of all time. Thank you, thank you, thank you
I've listened to this song about 10 times today. I am having such a hard time moving on from so many things in my past. I just want to move forward, but its like my feet are cemented.

Bernadette and Mandy sang this at Sondheim's Birthday Concert. They were fantastic. So much emotion and talent it's practically overwhelming
One of the most beautiful songs ever written!!!
And so true - I know I must move on!!!
truly brilliant.

My college theater conservatory class graduated today. And this is our graduation song. It’s bitter sweet. How can we simply move on but we must

Really needed this today.
Gives me goosebumps every time…
SO perfect and sad and beautiful
Goodbye Stephen, you were absolute and will be forever on. We that are still here will have to learn to move on wihtout you.
How does this have even one dislike? I don't want to harp on that in the middle of such a perfect performance, but... HOW?
I've completely lost count of how many times I've watched this video. Thank you so much for the post.
One of my favorite scenes from such an amazing musical...
Perfection.
Splendid!!! Absolutely five stars!!!
ONE OF THE GREATEST BROADWAY SONGS WITH THE PERFECT VOICES TO SELL IT. SUBLIME.
Thank You for this… There will never be another like Him… Thank You, Stephen.
Gosh I just saw a production of this last night and I was a blubbering mess all through this scene. ❤❤❤ It's such a beautiful show
This is a precious resource.
Happy new year! Stop worrying where you're going, just keep moving on
God I wish I could've seen this live! One of the best scenes in broadway ever an it's just not as magical when it's a recording
One of my all-time favorite songs. So much truth in one song. I love their voices together too!
absolutely yes.
This song could help me heal... thank you

One of my favorite songs from a favorite Broadway musical.
Omg I absolutely LOVE this xoxo
Bernedette Peters
"the choice may have been mistaken, the choosing was not" oh steve... im crying
my marching band's competitive show theme was on this. We watched the show as well. It was really moving. :]
I saw Bernadette in A Little Night Music, she was amazing
@DivaBehavior It truly is beautiful. Everytime, I watch the video, it's just goosebumps everywhere.
magnificent
Nothing beats this. Not Jake Gyllenhaal or any production. This is just the pinnacle that eclipses everything else.

songs for when it's dec 2, 2021, georges seurat's birthday a few days after stephen sondheim's death

He gets me every time at "and the life".
I saw them, but only remember Peters, funny because I am a big fan of Patinkin's acting.
Thanks i cried
Superb theatre. As good as it gets. Loved to have been present.
Nailed it
Must not tear up...
1 person just cannot move on.
Sondheim played this at Micheal Bennet's funeral, you can find it on here and it includes a lovely story as to why.
Goodbye, Steve.
Soooo hard to sing...I've tried! Brilliant song
I can't believe I accidentally hit 'dislike'! :O Forgive me fans of this video. I shamefully gave this video the first 'negative' mark. :(

When I feel depressed, this song makes me feel better.
2020 anyone
Very reminiscent of the Wonderful Ragtime.
Is it just me, or is this moment a high point in 20th century culture?
isn't that the guy from curb your enthusiasm..? .
So dusty on this site...
Abu Nazir and Count Rugen.
Who are the 2 idiots who thumbed this DOWN?!
I thought he was Simon Cowell
I just don't get Mandy's sotto voce. It's horrible.
