And to achieve this, you'll have to follow some rules about design. And that's the point of this video.
9:28 in my opinion. if your gonna build something with a flat roof you should make it a completely different colour. stone usually works best. and add some details like vents, small chimneys or skylights, this design usually works good when building post-war British houses or tower blocks. if you make a bunch of houses that are conjoined into a row of terraces. then you get the top and the sides of the wall that separates each house. make the wall a different colour, preferably a darker colour, then make it stick out from the rest of the building and add a stone or different coloured slab on top. do it to the end of the last house as well as it doesn't look normal if you don't and most houses after the war have a different colour on the end. slightly slanted roofs work well for post-war architecture. make sure that the shape isn't super complicated as most buildings of that time are mostly square with maybe one or two parts of the building sticking out. this goes for most post-war office buildings or flats. I wouldn't doe this kind of building tho if your trying to show off your building skills as it is really simple to do and doesn't have that mush detail as it's mainly curved roofs and unique shapes that make a building look complicated.
The "defying the laws of physics" thing is a thing in modern architecture. It's called a "cantilever" where the frame extends into the building and the weight of the rest of the building keeps it in place. But yes, a cantilever that big does look odd.
I remember making a large wooden hotel that has no details at all in a ripoff game of Minecraft. It was on one of the public servers, but after my mom's tablet broke I never could download the app again I was so super proud of it, so I hope that whomever owns it after me takes good care of 'The Wooden Hotel by OneOddKid' (my naming skills have always been bad lmao)
He didn't say that it was generally a little detail. He was saying that compared to the overly detailed house, the one he made was a lot less detailed. Which is true.
Now that’s what I call a “Building Tutorial” even though it is about how not to build, it teaches everything. Thank You, Grian! Actually overdetailing is similar to organised detailing. The difference is, the normal detailing is mostly symmetrycal, it is concentrated in the corners and edges the max, overdetailing is the same but the detailation is not that symmetrical and is spread almost randomly on the build with no precise manner.
It was this exact video that got me hooked on your channel, Grian, around six years ago. I can't believe it's been that long... thanks for all the years of insanity and beautiful builds.

Especially RP servers like the one I'm in. Entire cities spanning 300 blocks high and ungodly amounts of blocks across, lagging you to 3 FPS as soon as it comes within your render distance. And god forbid that a fight should break out. True Story: The entire server lagged so hard during a major war in the elven capital (the most overbuilt thing on the server) that most of us couldn't even log in, those that did were standing still and zipping around from lag, and then the SERVER CRASHED. Someone recorded the chaos and I made a GIF of it: imgur.com/0oSt2pd Thanks, overly-complex builders.
Hey guys thanks for the excellent feedback on the video - especially the animated intro thing, it took ages! Some people are getting very upset (wrongly so) over the intended message of the video. This video is intended to teach BUILDERS (which is what my channel is about, minecraft building) what I would consider a mistake when trying to make an aesthetically pleasing house. The fact that I have to clarify this is rather annoying because you're fighting over something really mundane. This video clearly isn't intended for the casual survival player who wants to have a practical house. If you are a practical house builder why would you even think about making something pretty? I also want to point out that it is my opinion, just like every video ever... Most people watch my videos because they WANT my opinion on how to build. OF COURSE you can build how you want. It's minecraft. That's the whole point. Don't get defensive because you made a box house. I'll never agree with you that it looks good, and I honestly don't care because it's none of my business. My channel is all about people who want my opinion on minecraft building. When my subs watched this video, the comments were overwhelmingly positive, then loads of non subs came in and just filled it with salt. If you don't want to learn how to build, go watch someone else. You have as much control over who you watch and who you take advice from as you do building whatever you want. Have a nice day and I hope you enjoyed the video! Love you all, even the haters
Upset viewers should know that this is YOUR OPINION, which may be different from THEIRS. I think many viewers would like a survival home which looks good and functional. I think they were upset with the starter home video. The homes in the video were mostly expensive to build, hard to defend, or not functional enough for most survival players.
Al right Grian but can you just show us a bit more, you saw my big message, and can you tell us a bit how to build like, a castle, I am a lover on the mediaval creations. Please show me some more tips from the mediaval futurish or normal furniture for Minecraft. That is what many people are on, and what about making a bridge, I really need a bridge in my world's so can you please do one. Thank you if yes, I don't mind if no. Tell me "Are you proud of your builds most of times?" I am happy as you do these videos about making building CORRECTLY and beautiful
this is why I just make a hobbit hole in a mountain, and just have like 40 rooms by the end of my playthrough. I feel bad for people trying to navigate it, its a complete maze
Dude, it's SIMPLE, how are you still not getting this? You go through the 4x4 vault door, down the stairs, past the skeleton grinder, into the enchanting room, place a torch 3 blocks to your right to trigger the hidden passage behind the bookcase, go down the hidden passage and to the LEFT, cause the right leads to a lava trap, use the slime trampoline to get into the slime farm, go around the outside of that and you'll find a one block hole with a ladder, don't go down there it's full of zombies with enchanted armor and swords, don't ask, put the keycard i gave you earlier into the fish tank left of the ladder hole, and then go down the hidden staircase that opens up, go straight from the bottom of the staircase and make sure you open the 3x3 spiral door not the 3x3 hipster door, cause there's a bunch of hoglins behind that, then past the apiary, and get into the elevator that takes you to the top of the mountain and THAT'S where the bamboo is stored. HOW many times do i need to explain it?
as a latin american person, I can concur we don't have those fancy pointy roofs, THAT SAID, we can still decorate the roofs with trees, balconies, or a little room in the roof
I see a lot of the people in the comments a bit upset because building in minecraft isn’t supposed to be a competition and is just about being creative and let your ideas flow out. Now, I agree with that opinion a lot. I think this video though is more targeted to people trying to improve the general aesthetic and skills of their buildings, not people who just wanna have fun. If that makes sense I guess.
I think if the title and tone were that of a tutorial video, he wouldn't be getting the hate he is. However he didn't, he just sounds like a pompous little turd.
I am a skycomplex builder in Minecraft, composed of cobblestone. Less on aesthetics, more on function. Functional overhangs to keep spiders out, entrances on either mountaintops or lakes to minimize Creeper threats until cats are in place. I focus on the core structure, others can fill the rest or expand the core for jutting rooms. Cobblestone and specific wood production are a must. When it comes to farms, I only need 1 water source block to water the rest, akin to aqueducts. I use cobblestone fences and torches for that effect.
Exactly. No one's gonna hate on you for throwing down something functional for your first few nights, or even if you just want to play the gameplay forever. But as you grow as a builder and run into roadblocks 'how do I make this look better agh!' a video like this is really helpful.
I gree I don’t like it when people like you tuber Judge people for their skill and imagination And make fun of by calling it A “Box” and building a better version and compared the two together But all people would CHOOSE their because it Their work their skill and imagination! Not to be rude but WE ALL KNOW THAT HE IS A PRO BUILDER but it doesn’t give him the right to Judge people for their work and style!
I make detailed houses now but the first houses you built in this vid, I made in middle school and I thought they looked good 😂 so glad I changed the way I build now. I just finished a wizard's tower in my minecraft realm and I love detailing like that
IKR when I'm on my friends worlds they usually use those kinds of blocks BUT ON OF MY FRIENDS MADE AN 8 FLOOR HOUSE AMD IT KILLED ME I COULDNT BE ON THAT WORLD ANYMORE
that is exactly how I do my houses, I build a 1 square pool on the bottom level and use a piston to make a waterfall elevator to the house, then when I am inside, I turn it off and no one can get up there.
It is really dificult to build trees because the leaves has to be so random, messy and still look natural. It is difficult to make something random and still make sure that it looks great or just good/fine.
That's a pointless task considering that all the things he points out are all things that novice builder do. Finding a house with those features is the norm not the exeption.
when he started hermitcraft re thought to himself "ah...well time to stop building in creative so much!" and now in hermitcraft 7 he thinks to himself "uh oh I am doing it to myself in my test world...eh who cares it only takes 12 hours to build a chandelier made out of diamonds!"
I built a tree house but I'm starting to worry about resources and I have to look for another forest but it's so far and growing takes time soooo don't build unless you have resources which is wood
weird, I never build a little dirt home unless trapped overnight, then I burrow, but I always fix it before i head back to my real home..... of course my latest place involves an underground stable, because my horses wanna live in a bunker too with all the new mobs out. I am also guilty of altering village homes as they usually need improved XD
This really helped because I am not a experienced builder in Minecraft I’m not that good of a builder in general but I am trying to improve so this helped me a lot.
Shoeperman Butthman He DID actually make a dirt hit in one Minecraft day, and it looks five times better than my little hole in a wall cave hut things. Also, Hermitcraft.
Just a quick note about roof overhangs: Skeletons and Zombies can hide under the roof or frame when the night ends to avoid burning. Just something to keep in mind for survival players
A well-lit and fenced off perimeter is one of my priorities. I never want to step out the front door and suddenly be face-to-face with a hostile mob -- especially a creeper!

Yes good job sir!
Omg first Hai Grian
Upset viewers should know that this is YOUR OPINION, which may be different from THEIRS. I think many viewers would like a survival home which looks good and functional. I think they were upset with the starter home video. The homes in the video were mostly expensive to build, hard to defend, or not functional enough for most survival players.
u are so good at building how long did it take for u too get this good?

Same, I have an underground house it has abt 13 rooms no joke
When I build underground houses I have a living room a bedroom and a crafting room 3 roomz
