Fond memories! I lived in my 1965 V W Camper in Boulder Colorado for a year in the early 70's. I went to work and camped in Boulder Canyon. Winter was my time.
Nice bus. Currently own a 73 Westy, but have had buses for over 20 years. Traveled all over the country in them. Just service it, enjoy the drive. If something breaks, stay chill and fix it. Best wishes and happy trails. Adventures await!! Chuck in Kentucky.
Thank you, yes we have already had to do a lot of work on the bus, but it’s always incredible how much improvement you see from each project. Sounds like you have some great stories to tell!
We love our tin top, now we added a rooftop tent which is a game changer. We're both too tall for the pop top and this is the way we wanted to do it. Good luck with your conversion and reach out if you need any help from us!
I've never been inside of a VW bus before, but it reminds me of the Airstream my parents had when I was younger. I've always wanted to get one of these and go on the road with it. I think I'm going to start putting money aside so that once I'm out of college, I can buy one of these and travel the US, me and the missus (as soon as I get one of those as well).
I recently bought a 79 kombi and can't wait to get it running ha Say, what's that thing you held that you say helps starts it up ? You should toats leave a link
Before you hit the road trip . Get a repair manual and few spare parts . There are lots of you tubes like ,VW life to help with this . I have been driving buses for 50 years .You are going to break down ,and need to know how to help yourself. Good luck, your going to need it.
Thank you! Traveling on a Bus is certainly a fun challenge, we’ve been breaking down and doing repairs since day 1. We intend to keep the Blue Doobie running as best as possible 😁
What is bear spray? Is that literally to keep away bears?? Seems so unusual as I live here in the UK 🇬🇧 and we have no bears here lol. 🤣 Must say it's a real straight bus to begin with. I had to do alot of welding and panels replaced due to it being the UK and the weather is shocking generally.. but gave me the option to paint it as a genuine hippy bus. I just hand drew the designs I made on A4 paper and transferred the design by hand. Electrical issues. Every Vw has Electrical issues I am sure of it ah ha 😄😄 Top fun. Don't sell it though. You Will regret selling it.... ☮️✌️ much love from an idiot abroad 💗😅🤣
Bear spray is a deterrent they tell you to carry in case you get mauled. Never had to use it, all the bears we’ve seen were quite far away and not interested in our presence, but I guess you never know!
you dont have to change transmission fluid again. Its not like the motor oil. Also I dont think the sixty nine came with a 1600. Not sure. Also if you put the heater boxes you will get all kinds of toxic fumes in the bus unless you restore the entire system. Just use electric heaters. Kinda funny that you two took off in the bus with so many issues or doing a full check on everything before driving across the country. I guess that is one way of doing it and not letting anything stopping you from taking off. there are so many more issues, but I will save them. oh and I wouldn't put the cabinet, it blocks your visibility and it doesn't give you that much more storage. You could probably put things on the roof on that rack. This video is a year old so I"m sure you have already figured all this stuff out by now. I also have a sixty nine, but mine is a westy.
Ours came with a 1600cc and I’m only changing the oil to “rinse out” the old stufd Please dont save the issues and let us know what you think we should work on !
People in Florida don’t know how to drive; crazy....😉. Also, try to clean up inside the engine compartment as best as you can. You want the cleaner fresh air you can get in there.
Now that we got rear ended, the engine compartment is filthy!! One day after getting it fixed I will do a nice re-paint and cleanup of the whole engine bay and gas tank area. Thanks for watching!!
@@onehappykombi so sad about that; bet you whoever rear ended you was texting or looking at the phone instead of having their eyes on the road. Hope they paid up for your repairs and your troubles.
I hate all the original internal parts. I'd have to rip all that out and start from fresh. That stuff would sell to other campers for a good price, that you could put back into building your van.
@@onehappykombi This trip was in 1986. the bus was a 1968. Wheel cylinder was not a problem until it was parked and cooled off. Then locked up. Towed to a garage in BC.

Doobie is in great shape for a '69! No rust and the engine looks completely rebuilt. Looking forward to seeing your travels! :-)
Hi Tony, Doobie's previows owner took amazing care and always kept her under a roof. Thank you for watching!
G'day guys,
Kevin here from Australia.
Great video and thankyou for sharing your home.
Safe travels.

@@onehappykombi after a while you end up sorting it out completely and it gets to be a very reliable driver. That’s the blessing in disguise.

I laughed at the 3 keys, I have a 67 beetle and both doors and ignition are all different, 3 keys
Yess 🤣 gotta love those vws
How does the fridge work?
It’s only an ice box
We put ice on the tray and it has a little hose to drain out as the ice melts
Works pretty well for 3-4 days
Cool vid, thanks for sharing. You guys the same bus that got rear ended by some speeding toyota truck a while back? Happy travels!
Yes unfortunately we got rear ended on our way to New Orleans! Thank you for watching!
@@onehappykombi that is sad; crazy drivers on their cell phones around these parts.

When we made our 4200 mile trip in a 1968 bus, I was able to cruise at 63 mph.
Stock engine?
@@onehappykombi Stock 1600.
@@obtomSD our engine has a lot of "upgrades" that made it run badly. New episode coming soon where we begin our "downgrade" back to stock, stay tuned!

Some of these buses have electrical shorts.

1968 --I averaged 63 mph Anchorage to San Diego. The only failure was a front wheel cylinder.
