As a caribbean family we all watched this program and Love Thy Neighbour. Brilliant in those days depicted what people of colour really thought of each other, blatant honesty! At least we all knew where we stood. Were far to politically correct nowadays. We take the piss out of each other irrespective of race, colour, creed, gender or shades, we ought to be able laugh and see the harmless humour without taking offence. Look at some of the great comedians out there....
Warren Mitchell, although describing himself as atheist, was Jewish and a member of the British Humanist Association. His Alf Garnett character was layered with irony.
What amazes me is the huge affinity you have with British humour. I guess it must be that, as a Canadian, you are more connected with it somehow. Most Americans do not understand it or get the jokes when they do.

I agree with you this is just comedy, and good comedy, it is a shame everything now is so PC, and people have turned into snowflakes, and are so easily offended. My father taught me that never pull fun at anyone, until you can pull fun and laugh at yourself first. Alf Garnett was a brilliant actor, and very talented, and as Alf in many of the sketches he played the part of a racist bigot, but he was the one who always ended up looking stupid, and this was the purpose of his character, to show that racism was not acceptable. Actually Sean, the show was not anti PC. It was, in it's day, pro PC. It mocked and ridiculed racism and racists as personified by Alf Garnett. He was always made to look the fool. Indirect criticism, this was the 70's. The start of the PC era. This was a time of changing attitudes on the UK. Something that never really happened in America. America is still trying to give birth to itself and it's a difficult labour.

Im happy to see an American who understands a sense of humour, it puzzles me when some people scream and shout about the racist language in his clip, yet they except someone knifing a person, or beating a person up. Im not offended when people use name calling at myself, I just laugh at their comment and go back at them with a sarcastic comment about them, and you can see the steam rising off them, completely stumped they are. Alf Garnett is a parody of racist old english guys...some people did not get they joke they thought it was promoting ignorance and racism, it was the opposite, it shows the BS at the foundation of racism, in fact I think the guy that played Garnett was Jewish (I forget his name and I'm at work and too lazy to check hahaha) basically I think the message was : old bitter fuckers are a source of a lot of that shit. Alf was very clever. He was highlighting the "wrongs" of racism. As a comedy show it worked but in real life the racism didn't. But I do agree with you, being politically correct has taken away the comedic value. I'm Irish and I miss the Irish skits, they were funny and, sometimes, relatable.

I met Warren Mitchell on a couple of occasions playing charity tennis matches. He was very well spoken and a true gent. When he missed an easy shot, he'd go into "Alf Garnett" mode for the audience. A genuinely nice man. Crap backhand, though ;o)
