You are not only a great signer, but, you are the best signing teacher. Here's why: -You repeat signs slowly -You show the signs from different positions;. -You pause/slowly show, describe the initial sign position. -You show how NOT to do the sign. (I now know to do mother & father from a more sideways starting point. I loved you video. I just subascribed. Please post more. BTW, I'm hearing, Iget my hearing aids next week, the students I teach love to learn sign, and signing is FUN. Your new friend, Mike
I'm trying to learn ASL because of my panic attacks and anxiety. i end up not able to speak, it just gets to much to handle especially with the many things that tend to run through my mind... (thank you so much for creating these courses, i'm able to navigate without getting confused and i now know where to start.)
That’s one of the reasons I’m learning and planing on making my mom learn. I’m hopefully getting a service dog to help with my chronic anxiety disorders and my panic disorder.
Theres a lady that comes into the pizza place i work at and she just shows us her phone. I wanna be able to give her the same experience everyone has. I noticed she signed thank you and assumed she might be deaf as well as she didnt respond if she wasnt looking at me. I hope itll make her happy once im able to do her order in sign language
That is great! I have a deaf brother and none of us in the family know very much sign language. At 54 years old , he doesn't enjoy family get togethers and it makes it hard to communicate with him. We should learn he What a great way to grow closer to each other. Very proud of you Ana!
Amazing how people can become so fluent in this and do it so quickly, that's what's hard for me to understand is people that are deaf they sign so quickly it's almost impossible for a beginner to understand
All you need to do is ask them too slow down! My son's deaf, and we have a hard time communicating with him because of it. Oddly enough my government will provide aides to teach him but not the family!
This is a flaw we need to change. spend our money where it’s needed to help family’s. My son is also deaf and this is a challenge for myself especially now that I work such long hours but the school of deaf riverside every Wednesday 6oclock if your in CALIFORNIA.
@@Tytheuncreator I think here in Michigan instructors will go into the home to help new parents with learning sign upon request. From what I understand few parents take them up on it, mainly the mothers. I was fortunate a church an hour away offered free sign classes and I took them up for about a year-and-a-half. Family issues came up and I needed to attend to those. Now my niece has an aunt and uncle in laws who are deaf and I'm trying to brush up on my sign language to encourage their family to improve their sign skills. I miss my friends who are deaf but I cannot easily travel to visit with them.
I've been learning sign language for a while now and recently i went to a track meet / field day where there was other schools involved. I saw some other kids from another school signing and they each had hearing aids on so I assumed they were deaf. At the end of the meet I went over to there interpreter and/or teacher and signed a few words. The kids looked so surprised and happy. They even waved at me! It was really nice and I can't wait to meet them again next year (I'm going to a different middle school so hopefully they will be there! ) Anyway this video really helped when I first started out! Thanks!!
That's AMAZING!! I work backstage crew at our community theater, and for each show we do, at least two of the performances are ASL interpreted. I know very basic signs, and it makes me so happy when I see kids sitting in the front rows clapping in sign language. Maybe I'm a person of simple pleasures, but it makes me happy when I can sign hello to them and they sign back.
A year ago I tried to learn asl and lost motivation. But now Im learning again and this video has been my main source and has helped me a lot to form conversations. I put it on my laptop in slow motion and just repeat with you until I learn it. I learned all 100 words in 4 days. Thank you!! ❤
Cossete Williamson Are u deaf or do you have a hard tome hearing. Because there is a big difference. I cant hear well but Im not deaf. Because I can't hear well at my age I want to learn I want to learn just in case. And I know a lot of family and friends that are deaf that had to learn when they were deaf. I love the language so if I dont go deaf I still will know another language
I have 2% hearing which is USELESS in the real world. I lost my hearing at 18 so it has been hard for me to learn ASL because I am so used to speaking and hearing. Now, I hope I can learn to be fluent. It's hard being able to speak and not hear, to understand and not sign well. Ugh.
Carmen Barr I am very sorry. I hope that you can learn sign language fluently soon. I don't know it but I want to just for fun and to be able to communicate with people like you. Best of wishes
I'm almost 12 and I just started ASL today because I decided I wanted to do it and this video is very useful. Thanks! I can now talk to my friends parents☺ I only know the alphabet, a few numbers, and this everything in this video.
Talia Elizabeth there is an asl club after school and i learned so much from it. i can now talk fluently with a young deaf girl at my school. i taught the alphabet to my sisters so i can just spell to them for things like hurry up or come on.
Talia Elizabeth Check out the My Smart Hands apps, about three of them are free and really helpful! That's where I started a few days ago and I agree that this video is helpful, I love the repetition.
i am a begginer my son is 3 years old and he doesn't speak but he is a hearing kid so i tell my self to find a way to comunicate with him because sometimes he is crying and i don't know why so i am teaching him a few words with sign and he is learning this video is going to be very helpful💜
Monny my daughter was the same way i had her enrolled in speach therapy and it has been amazing i also tought her a bit of sign witch also helped her learn how to say the words as well and a good tip is to read to him and have him lable things in the pictures
Your son sounds like my brother. He can hear perfectly well but dosnt speak. He points at something and screams instead of talking. We all started to learn BSL to communticate with him and he's doing well. He was recently diagnosed with autism. Maybe something you could check out for.
I got interested in learning sign language from watching Switched At Birth on Netflix. I think everyone should learn it. You do a great job of teaching it. I love how you repeat the signs several times. I will have to practice daily to remember them. Thanks and keep making more of these videos please.
The Dance Den its a tv show about def people. it was on abc family. its on netflix and i love it. its over now tho but all the eps r on netflix. it will teach u a lot about the def community. my baby is 18 months and now knows 159 signs! its amazing!
I'm learning sign language because I think that it should just be something that everyone knows. A deaf person came to me to order about 6 years ago and I felt awful that I couldn't communicate with them. Its a beautiful language and a great culture. I've studied bits and pieces, I've gotten books over the years and I'm happy to be picking it back up again. I'm also teaching my 3 Year old I'm not fluent but I can have a full conversion but watching a 3 year old sign is the most adorable thing in the world. She's starting to use sign language everyday now.
Wow I remember more signs than I thought. That made me happy. I really wish I had people to sign with whether it's a nice deaf person or hearers who wanna study together
Hey! I'm a teacher who want to learn how to sign to be able to communicate with a student in one of my classes without having to always go through our interpreter. This video gave me a fantastic and quick (which is very important for a teacher with SO much work to do for the entire class) way of learning some basic signs.
@@dashi1838 They are essentially two different languages and not mutually intelligible. ASL has a lot more in common with French Sign Language than British.
Thank you so much for sharing. My 8 year old has taken interest in the asl interpreter on the news. So i found you. Today we took your session and boy is this a mimi workout. Much respect to all ASL interpreters! We noticed that many of the signs are things we do instinctively. Again thanks for sharing. ✌
my fascination with ASL started when I started watching Switched at Birth and has only grown since then. It's such an amazing second language to learn and I have no plans on stopping until I'm fluent! it's been a long ride and continues to be, but in every way it is worth it.
cant wait for you to learn enough ASL to realize that switched at birth uses a lot of Signed Exact English! that show helped my desire to learn asl too but it's important to understand that you shouldn't try and learn from watching any TV shows because they aren't using ASL, it's a sort of kind of version of asl that is more for the hearing people who watch the show.
When I first started speaking, I was taught english and basic sign language. As I got older I stopped learning, and it always bugged me for some reason. I started doing backstage work last year and with every show we do, at least two of them are ASL interpreted. Someway somehow that made me want to learn sign language again. Now here we are!
I want to learn sign language because I'm very interested in it and I'm a sales assistant, and there once was a man who wasn't able to hear or speak properly. He came into our shop alone and we had difficulties understanding him. I don't want that to happen again. I want everyone to feel included and accepted. The man kinda stayed in my head because normally I can chit-chat with my customers, and that's what I love about this job, but when you suddenly can't do that, it's a bit weird. I hope I can learn it. (I'm working on my english too right now, so sorry if I made any mistakes, it's my second language)
Me and my 7 y/o niece r learning sign language starting with this video! We learn 5 words each day n order! And then practice the same 5 plus the new 5 each day and so on and so forth
I have followed her and she has been one of the best, nothing fast and repetitive and clear hands I learned quick, with no frustration. Thank you Ms. Barlow
I wanted to brush up on my sign language, and sure enough, I got caught by my 3 kids! Ages 9, 5, and 2. They all had so much fun signing to this video I guess we are now adding sign language to our homeschool curriculum!! Great video! Can't wait to watch more with my kids! :)
Excellent video thank you! My husband because of and hereditary condition has finally lost his hearing and now we are trying to learn sign language together. I like the way you don’t speak when you do the signs you just show the signs and then print the word on the screen this is very effective for me thank you!
What an excellent video! I'm not deaf, and I don't know any deaf people, but I thought it'd be interesting to learn. I stumbled upon your video and it's great, I love the way you show the hand positions before the signs, and used a lot of helpful facial expressions to put meaning behind the signs, too. Unfortunately I'm English so couldn't ever use these here, but it's a great video nonetheless!! Well done :)
I'm new to your channel. Do you have a video on health ASL? if not, can you do a video where I can learn to say stuff like "I'm dehydrated" "I'm allergic to..." "My blood sugar is low" "I'm hypoglycemic" "My blood pressure is high" "I'm a diabetic" "I'm prone to migraines" and also "I have dehydration issues" I need to learn that because i do have dehydration issues. If you don't have a video on this stuff will you please make one?
I just got a retail job and was informed we have 2 deaf customers and your video helped out a lot!! I already took ASL but need a refresher. Thank you so much (:
Here learning due to inspiration from LARP... and because deaf culture is neat. ... And because ASL is easier for my brain to remember when I blank out. You know when you cross through a doorway and can't remember what you were going there for? Since I started learning ASL, I don't forget anymore because sometimes my hands remember the word even when my brain doesn't. (Usually it's the sign for 'drink', I always forget to drink water...)
Signing has always fascinated me, As a part of all schools curriculum, a s L would.endow a global sense of community /greater peace of mind for future generations, sharing the method of universal communication. What the enriching influence on society/ various cultures as equalizer is unknown, but, I would look forward to less noisy public transport, for one thing! Having fun learning, Thanks for the great posts.
Thank you so much for sharing this, I work with developmentally disabled young people and some sign. I am just learning, and your video has been very helpful.
I think she did that on purpose so that you can fully learn the sign and not just memorize the video. Kinda how some people can't tell you the order of the letters of the Alphabet unless they sing the song, I think she doesn't want you to memorize the signs by association and instead fully learn the signs.
Crippled_ Clay i agree. when i took asl a few years back, it was all taught out of order, so we wouldn't just memorize the order of the words...and.instead learn the signs
Thanks! This video was so nice with out all the extra talking that other ASL videos have. I'm actually recently deaf, so the extra stuff doesn't help me. Thanks again for making this!
This is the best lady . She made me teach myself 4 phrases with these words and.. my parents are impressed . My mum said If I keep going I will keep going I'll have a great job in the future
LOOK up lifeprint it is a great teacher video school also. Actually a university with a college professor teaching. Bill Vickers is his name. I love three sites different but all very effective.
I’ve always wanted to learn ASL. Watching your motions and learning it with no sound was a whole different experience. Sign language is so beautiful and powerful. ❤️
I am a PA and I've always wanted to learn ASL in order to communicate with deaf patients. I learned the alphabet and a few simple phases when I was in 2nd grade, but now I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can (so I don't have to spell out words! Lol) thanks for your videos!
Some do & some dont, just like some hearing people do and some don't. But deaf people have their own slang words and phrases in each group. More fun facts: just like we have different accents (New York, Alabama, Mexican) ...People sign with different accents so some groups of deaf people will do a sign slightly different or use a completely different sign for something. (Like some people say "bathroom", some say "restroom") They're both right, but if you ask one hearing person, they'll tell you one word and ask someone else and they'll tell you a totally different word. Same with Sign Language. The best thing to do is just learn from real people in your area and remain flexible to which signs each person or group of people choose to use.
In Britain it’s called bsl and some of the words are different I haven’t learned bsl but I watch a youtuber named jazzy who is deaf and signs bsl and I’ve noticed a few things are different it could just be the way she signs but idk
Yes there are many different variations of sign language. There is ASL which is American Sign Language and there is BSL which is British Sign Language. There is also French, German, Spanish, and more. It is different with almost each spoken language and dialect. There are dialects in Sign as well
And to take it one step further, even in the United States there are various styles, such as formal ASL, or a blend of English Grammer and signs (PSE), or a more word for word transliteration form of sign called Sign Exact English (SEE). Additionally, there are regional signs that can vary depending where you live (East coast vs West coast). Then there are times local signs, for nearby cities, locations, events, etc. That was a really good question, Julienne!
julienne lampa yes. Some signs mean completely different things than when you sign it in ASL. my ex-friend’s parents are deaf and she would teach me that the different sign languages are like entirely different than what it is where you live.
Honestly idk why but I find sign language so interesting. I think it’s really cool that I can speak without even needing to talk and I am sure I can use this to help me get jobs since I’ll know another language. And your videos are the ones that have proved the most helpful! I can’t afford and don’t know of any classes so yea!
I found it helpful to do the signs and then pause it after you learn every individual word, repeat them all in order and if you forget one, restart from there.
ok i’m sorry if this was rhetorical, i’m autistic and have trouble telling when things are jokes or not, but once you nail these words then you should start making sentences and combining them, and then start learning other slightly more complex words
Hi Rochelle; I just discovered your channel recently, Oct 2020... I know a LOT of ASL vocab, took ASL 1 & 2 in college a LOOOONG TIME ago about 1989-1990....... Did great with A's & B's for my grades...in ASL ONE.... BUT ASL TWO....Had a whole lot more to do with Comprehension, & I started getting C's & D's.... :( I have still kept up my love & passion for ASL & wishing I could better converse with deaf people..... Not that I run into any deaf people really, that much at all.... But I'd like to help interpret should a need ever arise. PLUS I LOVE doing ASL to worship songs at church.... ASL hand movements / signing is so beautiful, while my own physical voice SUCKS big time.... I'm not even sure exactly, just how many signs I know at this point..... But, probably over 100 + or more I'm guessing. BUT, I just am having big time trouble with comprehension, if someone is signing back to me... Maybe it's too fast, I'm not sure.... But I want to get over this hurdle, & conquer that issue, & I think your channel can help me, THANKS ~ Cheryl H. St Paul MN
Those who are trying to learn try this without after watching the video . Out Like After Dad Know People Place No he's Love Please Now Dad Same Bad School Friend Some Girl Sometimes Last Sorry Still Tell Them Thank you That Some It Cold Little thing Then think Work See If Time See To See
I’m reading the comments about funny reasons to learn asl but I wanna make more friends so- asl it is. And my mum and dad don’t know asl so when we’re in an argument I can just use asl.
I've watched asl video for the last 3 months and i can say that you showed the most important words for asl communication .thank you looking forward to learning more from you
I’m here because my favorite character in the Dragon Prince is Callum’s aunt, who’s not only an honorable warrior and pure hearted individual, but she is also deaf. I’ve learned my ASL alphabet in 15 minutes and I only want to learn more.

But really did you have to say that? You couldn’t just go on with you’re evening and ignore it I had no problem till I saw you’re comment it just seems illiterate and a bit blundering if you ask me, sorry but it’s true.
I’m going to watch this video everyday !. I’ve always wanted to learn to sign, it’s the one language I always wanted to know, and I recently met the love of my life and he knows sign, his mom is deaf. So thanks for this. Great video!
After watching that video I wanted to learn to sign, but realized I didn’t actually have a reason to learn it so I didn’t. Then a few months later I meet someone hard of hearing that also loved A silent voice. And now I’m here, actually trying to learn. :’) Hopefully I stick with it.
I'm here because my girlfriend's family is deaf and I'm pretty sure i love her.

Sami Salverda thank you
Working on crossing this off my bucket list. I wish that it was taught in all schools.
This is legit in my Bucket List playlist and my paper. 😂
Should be in school before end of elementary !
I'm learning asl because I don't wanna speak anymore I'm miserable
Do you need to talk? I'm more then willing to listen if you do.
now this is interesting
I mostly want to learn sign language so i could not interact with anyone
I'm learning so I can pretend to be deaf and force my friends to learn sign language. Learning something new is good for them.
Jesus Christ Beatiful
You are not only a great signer, but, you are the best signing teacher. Here's why:
-You repeat signs slowly
-You show the signs from different positions;.
Your new friend,
Mike
michael g I want to learn sign does anyone do it through Skype?
What? She shohs how not to do the signs??? Where?!???
I absolutely agree...one of the best ask vdos!!!
And her facial expressions too...
i like how she pronunciates her words so even if she isnt signing you can still see what she is saying
Great video. But I wish you had shown words that are related consecutively.
“good” , then “bad” . mother after dad etc
Yeah I wish that too because it is easier for me to learn that way. but I understand why she did it alphabetical
Same
She did it alphabetical
The point of asl is using emotions facial expressions and hands to express yourself. If you can't do it without words the you will not learn.
Chemed Dorji she was doing it in alphabetical order
i love how every single person in the comments is sharing why they're learning ASL
I am earning it for anonymouse reasons
And they have good/wholesome reasons too I'm just trying to cheat on tests with my friends
I'm just wanted to learn to be able to communicate with all deaf people i would like to be able to help all people if possible

Me too, but I am just antisocial and hate talking

Maybe it's good that she is deaf...if she could hear you talk like you spell she would be ashamed. Learn to spell......
That is really sweet good luck and I wish you the best!😉
P.S. Ignore that Bee Free person. They're just being rude
That is great! I have a deaf brother and none of us in the family know very much sign language. At 54 years old , he doesn't enjoy family get togethers and it makes it hard to communicate with him. We should learn he What a great way to grow closer to each other. Very proud of you Ana!
@@beefree7114 lmao i cant so horrible had to laugh. thank god her mom cant hear her if she cusses out mom.
Are you any better yet?😁
I want to learn sign language because it’s such a calming and beautiful way to communicate with people. I was inspired by one of my friends
Amazing how people can become so fluent in this and do it so quickly, that's what's hard for me to understand is people that are deaf they sign so quickly it's almost impossible for a beginner to understand
It s much more easy for them after all those years of practice. Dont you have that one friend that just speaks so fast!?? It s the same thing :))

Maybe I'm a person of simple pleasures, but it makes me happy when I can sign hello to them and they sign back.
same experience with me last year uwu
A year ago I tried to learn asl and lost motivation. But now Im learning again and this video has been my main source and has helped me a lot to form conversations. I put it on my laptop in slow motion and just repeat with you until I learn it. I learned all 100 words in 4 days. Thank you!! ❤

I’m learning sign since my closest cousin just lost her hearing a week ago.
ohhhh noo
I know a year has passed but she hasn’t learned it yet
Since I have become deaf it is hard to learn the motions since I didn't grow up with them but this vid help a lot thanks
Are you really deaf tho??
Ugh.
Carmen Barr I'm so sorry "(

Monny my daughter was the same way i had her enrolled in speach therapy and it has been amazing i also tought her a bit of sign witch also helped her learn how to say the words as well and a good tip is to read to him and have him lable things in the pictures
Monny You need to get him to a professional and get him properly diagnosed. Get two opinions.
I love this comment💕
Your son sounds like my brother. He can hear perfectly well but dosnt speak. He points at something and screams instead of talking. We all started to learn BSL to communticate with him and he's doing well. He was recently diagnosed with autism. Maybe something you could check out for.
I got interested in learning sign language from watching Switched At Birth on Netflix. I think everyone should learn it. You do a great job of teaching it. I love how you repeat the signs several times. I will have to practice daily to remember them. Thanks and keep making more of these videos please.

Im watching "The silence"
I saw A Silent Voice
I got interested cuz of Switched at Birth I've actually picked up some from the show sometimes I pause it and do the signing👌🏽✌🏽

It's such an amazing second language to learn and I have no plans on stopping until I'm fluent! it's been a long ride and continues to be, but in every way it is worth it.
sameeeee
i’m watching it rn so that’s why i’m wanting to learn too!
cant wait for you to learn enough ASL to realize that switched at birth uses a lot of Signed Exact English! that show helped my desire to learn asl too but it's important to understand that you shouldn't try and learn from watching any TV shows because they aren't using ASL, it's a sort of kind of version of asl that is more for the hearing people who watch the show.
Great video! I really liked how you showed different angels for many of the signs...very helpful!

When I first started speaking, I was taught english and basic sign language. As I got older I stopped learning, and it always bugged me for some reason. I started doing backstage work last year and with every show we do, at least two of them are ASL interpreted. Someway somehow that made me want to learn sign language again. Now here we are!
My girlfriend was talking in her sleep last night, she damn near poked my eye out!

weirdo the girlfriend is mute or deaf so when she “ speaks” , she is using her hands. So while she was talking in her sleep, she was signing
I love it! Lol
Lol love it. Your funny bunny

You actually did really well with grammar. Also, how's the progress?
Me and my 7 y/o niece r learning sign language starting with this video! We learn 5 words each day n order! And then practice the same 5 plus the new 5 each day and so on and so forth

This is a great video. I think it would help more to have them organized by topic rather than alphabetically (e.g. good-bad, before-after, etc.).

I’m learning ASL because my best friends is hard of hearing and I want to learn for him and better communicate with him
Signing has always fascinated me, As a part of all schools curriculum, a s L would.endow a global sense of community /greater peace of mind for future generations, sharing the method of universal communication.
I really appreciate how slow you are doing them.
I’m learning ASL because Im afraid I might go deaf some day, Im already having trouble hearing
What a clear and fantastic approach! The method where Rochelle repeats the sign 3 times is an excellent technique. So helpful. Thank you!
could you put the words that are alike together? like come and go, before and after. Because I noticed you didn't do that.
yyyael Pan I think she was doing her check list alphabetically. Like always and also came before go, because a is before g.
It's in the daily lessons.

Thanks! This video was so nice with out all the extra talking that other ASL videos have. I'm actually recently deaf, so the extra stuff doesn't help me. Thanks again for making this!

I’ve always wanted to learn ASL. Watching your motions and learning it with no sound was a whole different experience. Sign language is so beautiful and powerful. ❤️
*Very important question: do I copy her in mirror image?!?! Does it matter which hand you do it with????*
@Hayden Minish thank you
Use your dominant hand.
it says that asl is in left hand, and bsl(british) is in right hand. but i say, use your dominant hand too
use your dominant hand. So if ur right handed use ur right hand or if ur left handed use ur left hand.
Use the hand you'd use to write with to do the motions. That hand is your dominant hand.

I am a PA and I've always wanted to learn ASL in order to communicate with deaf patients. I learned the alphabet and a few simple phases when I was in 2nd grade, but now I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can (so I don't have to spell out words! Lol) thanks for your videos!
It’s my second year in ASL class and it’s so far LIT ! It’s awesome once you get to know it and learn it more.
I'm learning sign cuz' 2 out of my friend group of 5 are. This way we can communicate even more secretively
Dumb question, but will ASL folks know slang???? Like " i cant with you" or "youre doing the most" lol
The best thing to do is just learn from real people in your area and remain flexible to which signs each person or group of people choose to use.
yep
I love watching this video on repeat! It helped me learn so much more! Thank you so much
I really enjoyed it. I loved the way you took time to make sure that the sign look right from all angles. Thank you

Aw that’s great! You’re a good friend. Good luck!
ah, yes, shin language, truly the best language
Is there different types of sign laugage depending on what type of English speaking country you're in???
Yes there are i think. I dont know much but i do know that asl is american sign language so it might be different somewhere else

I’m going to watch this everyday what else is there to do
ok i’m sorry if this was rhetorical, i’m autistic and have trouble telling when things are jokes or not, but once you nail these words then you should start making sentences and combining them, and then start learning other slightly more complex words

Hi Rochelle;
I just discovered your channel recently, Oct 2020...
I have still kept up my love & passion for ASL & wishing I could better converse with deaf people.....
But I want to get over this hurdle, & conquer that issue, & I think your channel can help me, THANKS
~ Cheryl H.

I’m going to watch this video everyday !. I’ve always wanted to learn to sign, it’s the one language I always wanted to know, and I recently met the love of my life and he knows sign, his mom is deaf. So thanks for this. Great video!
Who's here after watching the movie A Silent Voice?
After watching that video I wanted to learn to sign, but realized I didn’t actually have a reason to learn it so I didn’t. Then a few months later I meet someone hard of hearing that also loved A silent voice. And now I’m here, actually trying to learn. :’) Hopefully I stick with it.
