Maya & Miguel Fixed Everything Wrong With Primos!

- Do you remember Maya & Miguel? It was created by Deborah Forte and it premiered in 2004. It followed the adventures of this brother and sister duo, Maya and Miguel Santos and their group of friends in the fictional town of Port Bay. But Over time, it seemed to have faded from the public consciousness. When I think of this show, it honestly feels like a fever dream or the Mandela effect.
#primos #maya #miguel
Fun Fact: Wordgirl originally was apart of the show as shorts
"The Colossal Adventures of Word Girl"
I'm surprised that WordGirl is probably the only PBS Kids show that actually got away with alot of edgy cartoon violence and humor.
I kinda wish we had another show like that for the network.
@@kootunesscrewystrangely enough a few family guy writers actually worked on Wordgirl
@@BlueBlazeKing I think a R&S guy was also involved on the show too. (Thankfully, it's not John K)
@@kootunesscrewy well, technically Marvin the tap dancing horse had a few dirty jokes but that's it (idk if it's a PBS kids show exactly since it came from Canada, it used to air on there as well as Qubo, which is where most people remember it) And I agree, Wordgirl and Martha Speaks were the only two shows I think were more for older kids, while Curious George and Zaboomafoo were more preschool-like
I loved Maya and Miguel as a kid! This show handled a diverse cast way better than any modern show today.
Same!
Alma's Way has a good diverse cast too, characters of different ethnicities, who are disabled, and have different types of families. If anyone wants a list of the specifics, I'll be glad to give it to them. They even have cultural and medical advisors to make sure that they're represented correctly. And fun fact: the show is created by Sonia Manzano, who played Maria in Sesame Street.
You should check out Craig of the creek if you’re looking for another cartoon with a diverse cast. Its very cute!
@@multifandommania2.0 yes, I don't watch PBS kids anymore (obvious, I grew out😅) but I've briefly seen the newer shows succeeding in diversity with their casts; I would like a list of more besides Alma's Way? :)
@@pandaworld8166 Molly of Denali has a fun look into the Aleutian/Inuit people and even talks about not telling insensitive jokes towards people.
Hero Elementary also has a main cast of diverse characters from Mr. Sparks and Lucita Sky being Latin-Americans to Sara Snap being Asian, an animal loving ginger named Benny Bubble, and African-American Autistic AJ Gadgets...an Autistic Superhero isn't something you see that often...let alone multicultural autistics...and in addition to their superpowers that are traditional, they also do scientific method stuff...AJ was also given an extra boost of confidence in the episode discussing Autism where his fangirl said "oh now you have an extra superpower"...which is going a step further than what even Arthur and Sesame Street dared doing especially after Sesame Street pulled by starting correct with Julia and AWN and then deciding to go with Autism Speaks instead after being warned that Autism Speaks would tell them to treat Julia as "Unruly" even though Julia was based on her creator's kid and her creator knew better...they went the Daniel Tiger route where while yes it is more common in boys they actually showed ways to help beyond just "being calmer and slowing down a bit and specific routines" like Arthur established, they actually even gave good methods to help with the Autism community like Noise Cancelers, Alternate Applause Methods, Signing Signals, Stems and with AJ they didn't even bother having Mr. Sparks explain...AJ did it himself. That's one of the best high-function/low support examples of an ASD person I've seen so far in PBS media...and I say that as someone on the spectrum...the other one? Well even though it's never outright said....Barney in the classic era actually did have an autistic character in it's first three seasons after the BYG videos ended (and it's quite popular with the ASD community like Thomas & Friends iterations are)...Shawn...who went through many of the things you'd expect us to and having no fear sometimes (and other times having it) about them while still having the most productive imagination out of the bunch + this rarely seen one, Min, a girl is his best friend...and that's all they are is best friends....or at least until season 3 they're just best friends...but by season 3 they're "best friends".
Maya and Miguel looks like such a comfort show
it is🦜
It really was
it was THE comfort show
It definitely was
It is,i use to watch this with my mom and we love the show

Thank you!!! Finally someone mentioned their Puerto Rican heritage! So many people forget about it
I somehow missed that their dad was Puerto Rican
Loved this show growing up, they were like the only hispanic/latin representation I had besides Dora and Diego.
And Handy Manny
And Mucha Lucha
Don't forget El Chavo Del 8 Animado! ❤😊
@sirgothnerd9297do I have news for you. An english dub does exist

I used to have a Maya doll, the ponytail would spin like in the show, it was so cool
i had this doll too!!
Same here!

I didn't even know they had merchandise?!
Omg why didn’t I know this existed??!!
Maya and Miguel made me recognize my toxic family dynamic with the second line of the intro. It was so bizarre to see siblings getting along especially on tv which I watched too much of. I legit grew up thinking you were supposed to dislike and be competing with your siblings/cousins at all times. Being the youngest in that environment stank.
Too bad I watched Clarissa ☠️
Competition against siblings isn’t bad when there is love in there too but if the relationship is only about completion and spite then yeah that’s pretty toxic

The 2000s were what the 2020s want to be when it comes to diverse media.
And yet the 2020s were nostalgic for the 2000s.
eh, 2000s kids media was pretty good with diversity in skin tones, on PBS it was at least; I think diversity in media is only improving really
2000s cartoons wanted to be more diverse as well but unfortunately the network wouldn’t let them. Like including a gay couple for example
@@pandaworld8166 PBS was actually ahead in both culture and tone since 1969, but it became more apparent in 1994...do you want to go to..."The Puzzle Place"?

I think it’s inevitable that someone would bring up Maya & Miguel when discussing Primos.
I think it's inevitable that someone would bring up literally any other show that featured Latino characters when discussing Primos. Specifically to show how Primos did it wrong. Everything from Maya&Miguel, Casagrandes, Mucha Lucha, DragonTales, to even Dora the Explorer.
Even the one full of stereotypes (Mucha Lucha) was less insulting, but that's because it's designed to be stupid.

This was my comfort side cartoon back in PBS Kids Go! Next to Arthur and WordGirl but this one felt like it hit more on my background since I came from a family of Mexican immigrants and was still learning English back in the day.
PBS Kids Go! was its prime! Not to mention Fetch with Ruff-Ruff Man and Wild Kratts were the ones I grew up.
I relate with both the original comment and the reply so much. Coming from a immigrant background and only really having PBS kids to watch, I really enjoyed all these shows (especially Word girl, Maya and Miguel, and Wild Kratts. I miss the flash games :')

To think that early to mid 2000s Disney have alot more back bone than 2020s cultural Disney is like night and day
Not sure if you meant this show
in particular, but Maya and Miguel was on PBS Kids, not Disney.
My childhood showw 🤩 btw did you know that Maya's thing where she gets an idea so big it makes her bobble hair tie glow that she got it from Abuela? I remember there was an episode when Abuela said "Eso Es!" too and Miguel was like oh no there's two of them 😭
Yeah
I was looking through my grandmother's old vhs tapes that she used to record for me when I was younger and stumbled upon some episodes of Maya and Miguel! Wow, I forgot how funny and endearing the show was. I'm an adult and yet I still found myself enjoying the episodes, they're that well written in my opinion.
I even remembered playing some of their flash games! My favorite was this ping pong type of game lol
I think any show was before 2011
I loved the cooking game with Abuelita!
Maya & Miguel had to run so Primos could set back latinos 50 years, then change it last minute and pretend like it never happened...
This show mean so much to me as a kid since at the time there was nothing like it or at least representation of diversity and culture of the family and friends.
It's done so well while humanizing them like their normal kids and have funny shinanagains it's so refreshing and fun to watch

I Loved Maya and Miguel Such A Great Show 😊
Mya and Miguel was prolly one of the biggest parts of my early years pretty much the whole PBS Kids 💯
PBS kids go! Era was an interesting time. I also liked how it was one of the shows that started showing shorts near the end as backdoor pilots. Plus the credits really gave me a Clifford vide. From the background to music. I also liked how even the characters were learning Spanish with the viewers.
I never understood the concept of watching cartoons before school.

Maya and Miguel may likely have influenced the creation of The Casagrandes. And both shows have a parrot that is voiced by Winslow the Mouse (jk, it's Carlos Alazraqui). What did Maya and Miguel have that The Casagrandes have or haven't?
El Tigre have an parrot named Senor Chapi

I love things like this while I was only aware of this show it must have been fun for people to see themselves in a show. Andy only having one arm is a great way to show disability. Avatar is a great show in that regard, two characters come to mind Teo and Toph. Teo is shown gliding through the air his father just says Teo lost his legs and it’s never bought up again they never talk down to him, I’d never seen that in a show. Toph is self explanatory, the Blind Bandit episode is amazing, it shows that some people may see disabled people as helpless, and feel the need to do everything for them. I know it’s a Maya and Miguel video, I just find disability in shows neat being disabled myself.

This was back when PBS kids could show diversity but not make the audiences feel like racists for not being educated until now. Also, not only does this show have diversity in a good way, but I love how Maya is the one who comes up with the ideas and Miguel is like "Yeah maybe we shouldn't do this". I think that's so cute!
