This three-part series of video essays examines the Kierkegaardian existentialism set in motion by Richard Linklater’s ‘Before’ trilogy. In this video essay, part one, I focus on ‘Before Sunrise’ and discuss the differing existential states of the trilogy’s enduring couple, Jesse and Céline. In doing so, I also establish the key aspects of Søren Kierkegaard’s philosophical project that the film grapples with.

There’s a section of the before sunrise script that that wasn’t in the movie where Celine speaks about the difference between a “life examined” and a “life experienced” and she says “Maybe if I had none of these stupid artistic pretensions at all, I would be looking at the world differently”. If you haven’t read it before I’d really recommend it. It completely aligns with everything you’ve pointed out.

Thanks for pointing that out, Olivia! I haven't read the script - I'll try to get around to reading it one day.

One thing I noticed about Jesse is that he is quietly controlling and passive aggressive. That’s why Celine eventually finds him unbearable by the third movie. I think you captured that very well in this analysis.
