Thanks for this thoughtful review of the 390 Vikas. I wish we had the same weather here in England to ride in as you.
Personally, I prefer the longer action throttle, seems to give me plenty of control.
Yes, hazard lights would be good.
Tank size is indeed too small, but there again a bigger tank would raise the center of gravity when full.
The seat is good for round town, and as you say it get a bit much on the bum on longer runs. However, this is true for most bikes.
The wheels are a trade off; they are light which gives good maneuverability.
Tires seem very good on surfaced roads, even in the wet, again a trade off.
Exhaust note is OK, it is a bit heavy of course, but this is emissions regulation dependent. Central exhaust does give central low down weight.
ABS seems to work well; there is of course the hidden switch.
My oil seals are OK so far; looks like this problem might be fixed now.
The dent in the exhaust is OK for me; it helps to keep the whole package compact. This is good as it makes it look like a 125, until you turn the throttle of course.
I find the back break lever ok with shoes, may be more difficult when wearing boots.
I think the clutch action is fine, mine does not feel hard.
My main issue it that it still cuts out occasional, and can be difficult to start. It starts perfectly when cold, and perfectly when hot, but when its just warming up the starting can take a good few seconds. This problem has got better as my engine loosens up with use. Hopefully it will continue to improve.
On the positive side, this is probably the most fun motorcycle around. Im starting to love mine.
    Stay safe, John

      Hello Dr.Campbell,
I feel honored that a person of your status has taken interest in my video. Thank you for letting me know about your experience with the Duke 390. Yes, I too absolutely love this machine. The warm start issue mentioned by you is not uncommon, I have heard it from a few friends too. Hope that issue gets resolved for you soon. I had a look at your TH-cam channel and loved it. I have very keen interest in medical science. I have subscribed to your channel and will follow you. Hope you enjoy my other videos also. Do subscribe so that you can stay updated with my new videos. At first, I was going to write and criticize you for being too picky about things with the 390 Duke, then I realized that it is far better to know all of the little things that might be an issue. While these concerns may not be important to me, I could see how a lot of what you pointed out could be a potential problem for someone who is considering this bike. Thank you for your thorough review! It was very informative. Cheers.

Dude it's a street/city bike,if you ride long distance you need a touring bike,a if have bad rounds get a motocross! Every bike has his purpose, you can get Harley and complain that hi is to big and it's hard to ride on it in city but when you ride long distance you are king!
I have a duke about 3 years now,and I think it's good one,for every day using,it's much better than cbr or ninja, not on the track, but his no build for it,stuns, city is his home!
    How ever thanks for video!

bro! nice videos.does duke390 handle the crosswind forces? which one would be a good option between rc and duke for wind force problem.. like duke can go 165 but doesn't it wobble .. only because rc has a ferring i am gng for it. can u share duke390 stability after 100kmph?because i have a feeling that duke390's front end may become light at high speeds which may not inspire confidence at such speeds unlike rc390 . whats your suggestion?

    • @WoodomainJeremyBroun

Chuanyu Zang I think the RC390 has a few of the Duke issues sorted. Not too hot running in the UK. Throttle and clutch seem okay. Rear foot brake too high. Mirrors poor visibility. Not a bike for towns but great on the open road.

This is very helpful video. Unfortunately all other reviews by so called "professional reviewers" end up as better looking ads. They just cover problems in a bike or car in last 10 seconds and make it look like nothing.

currently own a p220 and planning to buy a duke 200 for daily commuting(around 25-35kms).
What are the good things and not so good things about the bike?
I have read many reviews and mostly noticed overheating issue and they have to change particular parts entirely which had cost them around 10-12k.
Does this prob has to do something with the way u ride or is it normal.
If riding is the prob what is the possible way to overcome this prob?
Sorry for my bad english and thanks in advance :)

Very good review, I have owned one for a week and have to say Im gutted by its unreliability as in the week since I picked it up it worked for 2 days and has been back at the dealer since!
In the uk the bike cost me £5000 with a akrapovic exhaust (so not a bargain)which is slightly cheaper than a mt07 which is a excellent bike at £5300

So it's been a year and a half since you uploaded this video. In all this time, have you faced any other issues on the KTM that felt like they were a deal breaker? I understand the power and riding experience on this bike is phenomenal, but nonetheless, do you think this is a bike that needs constant maintenance and garage run-ins or can you ride it without worrying about breakdowns, gasket blow ups, oil seal breaks and such?
    Thanks!

I'm getting 56 miles to the gallon (not sure of the conversion) at highway speeds which to me is amazing. I will subscribe to see more of your videos. also, what brand exhaust did you buy? Hi Vikas,
Thank you for your video. It was very informative and thorough. Good work.
I would like to know 2 things if you have faced it:-
    1) I keep hearing that the bike overheats in stop-go traffic. What do you do to cool it down, if you are stuck in a situation like this?
    2) The bike fails to start up on when the engine is warm. What would you do in this case?
I haven't got a KTM yet. But I was just researching up on it before purchasing it.

    • @rvkvikas
      @rvkvikas  9 ปีที่แล้ว

Starlet Abraham Thank you very much for watching my video. Yes, the bikes heats up in bad traffic, however, I do not get the High Coolant Temperature warning often, in case I do get the warning, I just pull over the bike and cut the engine off and wait for a few minutes. My bike never had a warm start issue yet :). The 2015 model has many issues resolved. You can buy that, you will be happy. Hope you have subscribed. Thank you!

  • @simonking4988

Hi Vikas, Here in Australia we have great roads (not so many pot holes) but strict laws on licencing. For someone just starting to move from a learners licence into a restricted licence the 390 Duke is by far one of the better bikes to have while waiting to move onto an open Motor-Cycle licence. However, I have found that over heating can be an issue with my 390 Duke, especially during summer in traffic. Do you have any suggestions on after market cooling systems for me?

    • @rvkvikas
      @rvkvikas  9 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you Simon for watching my video. You are correct, over heating can be an issue with Duke 390 in traffic in summers.. We face the same problem here... We have tried many things, using high performance engine coolant and KTM also had modified the speed of the radiator fan, however, nothing can resolve this. The reason behind the engine heat is; the engine of Duke 390 is a very high compression engine, the compression ratio is 12.6:1, which is more than superbikes. Hence, it makes good horse power and also makes engine heat.. Please let me know if you have anymore questions. I would be glad to help. Hope you enjoy my other videos also. for the virtues of ktm has bring to the Indian riders we can overlook its shortcomings, we are more than fortunate to have such amazing bikes at this price point. also no bike is perfect every bike has its shortcomings, we should accept its shortcomings and consider it negligible when virtues are really high.

Excellent review. This is the kind of stuff I want to know about any motorbike before I buy it.
I have a Honda CM450, and a Honda Rebel 250, both of which I haul a lot of groceries on, and I'm curious what kind of real world mpg one would get from a KTM RC125/200/390. The Yahama MT125 you get 125mpg, but I think the KTM looks a lot better but I'm unsure how competitive the RC125 would be mpg wise. Or would I want the 200 for groceries, or the 390 for speed... tough decisions. 75% of the time I haul groceries so it would probably decide on that.

PC5032 Thank you for watching! The real world fuel efficiency of the KTM Duke 390 is a minimum of 20km / LT of fuel (That is when I go full throttle in all gears). When I ride more sanely, I get 25 km / LT of fuel and when I cruise on a highway at 120 kmph at 6000 RPM, I can get 30+ km / LT of fuel also. About the Duke 200. You will get a fuel efficiency of a minimum of 35 in urban riding condition and up to 45 on Highway cruising. You can find me on Facebook also. My ID is Vikas.Rachamalla . Thats the problem with fanboyism.
Makes you forget to be practical .. makes the bike look perfect in every sense.
They defend as if they created the bike, even the manufacturer would agree to some pros and cons balance... but fanboys dont.

I've owned a Duke 390 for about 2 years now. It's a great little bike for what it was built for. It's a Commuter and little Cafe Racer at best. It's certainly not a 'Tourer' at all and doesn't pretend to be. It's also built to a price point which is a feature of the bike. At the end of the day it's a cheap little run around which it fulfills very nicely. An alternative would be it's big brother the 690, but you'd pay nearly double. Enjoy it for what it is, at the price you paid for it.

    hey man.
I guess the engine heat's cz of the single cylinder churning out so much of bhp too. yes, and its definitely a high-compression one. is there any way to rectify this though???
can the engine fan be programmed to turn on earlier in some way???
as for the ABS, i dont think you need a "physical"button on the handlebars as you dont have to switch off the ABS.
you said the tyres are low profile, and KTM's ABS is the LEAST intrusive of all, thats what i know, so the ABS kept on always shouldnt be a matter.
I have heard that the KTM's have a very choppy acceleration which might be a bit too harsh for the new riders or beginners. is that true?? i have ridden a Duke 200, and did feel so a bit !
When you mention slipon exhaust, please suggest people what slipons they can get for a 390, as it might help them.
have posted a question in another of your videos, please let me know.
