1. practice in front of the mirror to get your facial expressions right.. lol. 2. record yourself and play it back in the car or on your phone to see how you sound. 3. Let some of your friends listen and let them give you constructive criticism. 4. Listen to other DJ's who do it properly and imitate them for practice (don't imitate them during live shows). 5. Don't piss anybody off with what you say. 6. Be confident. When you say "throw your hands in the air" say it like you mean it.
Dude, your videos are really helpful especially for a beginner like me. Love your stand on the vinyl vs digital, and I learned a lot of basic scratches from your vids. Keep up the good work.
Definitely a valuable skill to acquire. As a resident you are often asked to announce drink specials and upcoming events. Bartenders and waitresses absolutely love it when you remind people to tip them. TLM is right speak with confidence like you are in charge. Other tips include, avoid talking over vocals. Nothing kiss the vibe of a song as much as that. Even if its instrumental sometimes it is a dynamic and instantly recognizable intro. In that instance it is probably preferable to fade the previous track out, speak in dead air. and then slam that intro at them. Like TLM said keep it short. If an announcement you need to make HAS TO BE longer or you need to screw with someone like a birthday patron have a loop playing in the background while you do it. Mobile DJs will have to MC even more Especially if you get into the wedding or mitzvah markets. School dances will require a lot of MCing as well. Get confident and comfortable with this additional skill and as always be professional.
WORD !!! I hate having to speak, but when I do, I like the sense of authority over the group/crowd.. Love your vids. and tutorials bro... Salud from South Carolina, U.S.A. !! =)
I just want to let you know that your videos are very helpful. I'm currently watching your scratch tutorial videos because that is the part of my game that id love to expand on. Thank you so much.
Very good advice and the video was simply and cleanly produced. I think you were right on the money with everything you said. My experience was the same as yours when I first started. I do recommend that new DJ's take your advice and think ahead of time, exactly what they're gonna say and how they're gonna say it before they even raise the mic. I have worked for quite a few club managers who required me to make certain announcements. Plus, you always want your bartenders telling each other and the management what a great DJ you are, so ya gotta give shout outs to them! Oh and if you have a big name come to your club to perform & your MC is outside smoking a cigarette when Jeremih walks out on stage cuz nobody gave you a heads up that he was on his way out, you can keep things going smoothly & always have that option in case u need it. I almost always plug my own mic into the DJ mixer, even when I have an MC supporting me so I was able to cover for my MC temporarily at a critical time!
thanks for the tips, on my last job..they said "we want you to come back for our next party but please talk more"...Your comments are a good starting point. DJ Oldschool / Atlantic Beach, FL
Just love all aspects of hip hop, can't wait to get my replacement set on boxing day (its been a few years lol) Just been MC'ing and producing... can't wait do fluently do all three again
Great advice! I also joined Toastmasters recently and through their program been learning how to effectively communicate with an audience via the various projects/speeches you have to complete. Although I didn't join specifically for MCing I'm already becoming much more comfy addressing a crowd so maybe that's also something folks can look into.
This helps out a lot, I need to work on my mic skills, a lot, I'm not a shy person, just don't know what to say for certain situations! Thanks TLM! , you should do more videos on this
I'm expected to do some MCing at my gigs. The bars like me to mention drink specials and I ALWAYS give a shout out to the bartenders by name. They really like it. I was surprised that not everyone did that. Do you have any suggestions as to what else I can say to hype the crowd or get them out in the floor. We tend to do classic rock, country and a little modern rock before transitioning to dance music once people get their drink on. I can usually get them out there w a line dance and I do it as well to get things going but what else can I do? Great advice in your videos btw. I just found you.
Have you got any tips for dealing with feedback in the booth? I MC a bit but always separate to DJing because as soon as I switch on a mic behind the decks it starts screaming! I would love to be able to add it to my sets
Hy . I am in despair. My DDJ-RZX outputs the microphone on master and I can hear it on the stereo system connected with chinch. However, I can't hear it on the streaming software OBS when I want to stream. My Controller Software is of course Recordbox. Do you have a tip on what the problem could be? Kind regards from Germany.
I'm a mobile DJ. Would you advise cutting the music to MC in between or at parts during a school dance or wedding? Those venues normally call for playing one track after another with small comments in between. However, I wanted to get your thoughts about stopping tracks all together during those events, especially functions that are primarily all dancing.
I would minimize stopping the flow. So keep the music going as much as possible and just host over the music. If you do stop the music, just make sure that the next song is an absolute banger. That way you know the crowd will react the right way. Most of my hosting is actually over the music. Only if it's better to have everybody's complete attention will I stop the music to speak. Or (like I said in the video) when it's for a transition with a major bpm change. I think I will do a tutorial vid for this topic
djTLMtv or you can just look for a part in the track that have a clear beat, and put a 4 or 8 beats loop, and say whatever you wanna say, then put on the delay frz or echo frz and just drop the other track on the 1 ( this is perfect for me because i don't think it's a good idea to cut the music especially when i'm the headliner)
Yo... What up TLM... I've watched probably every single video that you have on TH-cam where you're mixing for a radio station... My question is if you could please do a video on how to incorporate scratching into you mix... I've you use the baby scratch and the transformer but I just can't get it to flow correctly... Thanks in advance
TLM what is your opinion about rapping when DJing? I am also rapper as Dj so sometimes I just put some beat playing and start freestyling or rapping some song over it. Is it a good thing to do and what is your opinion?
DJ TLM first and for most your reviews are on the money i have a question totallyoff the topic how do i hook up a mixer to my ns7 a review would be much appreciated
You want to hook up a mixer to the NS7? To connect 2 DJ sets? The NS7 has an rca line in on the front so you connect an rca cable from the master out on your mixer to the that line in on the NS7
what mic do u recommend, i am having problems with mine ,evetime i put tje volume up ,i am getting big noises on tje speakers i use the djm s9 mixer and cerwin vega A28 x6 and two 28 " sub
Anyone know any good sites or books that help develop your mic skills? I'm a wedding DJ but I'm looking to get my crowd interact on the mic on a higher level
Totally off the topic... is that just a poster of the "Mecca and the Soul Brother" album or a box set up on the right side of your shelf? lol That was one of my favorite all time albums all the way through. Good video by the way. I've been working Hosting/MCing an event while DJing. The struggle for me at times is setting up and transitioning while talking. Doing two things at the same time. It's tough at first.
Kingdom Minded Show It's a box set and The Main Ingredient box set is right next to it. Mecca and the Soul Brother is in my top 5 favorite albums ever!
i want to ask you about the key of a track ( 11A,4A etc....) what does that means? do the key of 2 tracks has to be the same in order to get a good mix?
This is one of my biggest problems in a mobile setting it is easier you have things that you are going to have say at times ex. first dance in the club i tend to focus more on the mixing and forget to talk as the night goes on
No, not to my channel, but you can check out some footage from my old radio show. It's not a club, but it was a mix show so I would be hosting/MC'ing while I was DJ'ing. vimeo.com/12096624 DJ TLM - New Jack Swing @ Set It Off (June 4th)

Can I Mix songs together like one with word and one with just the beat
acapellas and instrumentals are able to be mixed as long as you have them going together and drop at the right time
Could you upload a video of you where you are mixing in club and mc'ing and all that stuff?
Greetings from Germany :D
No, not to my channel, but you can check out some footage from my old radio show. It's not a club, but it was a mix show so I would be hosting/MC'ing while I was DJ'ing.

Unless a car has to be moved or something has been lost or found, I try not to speak. The music is the star not me.(I Think)

What do you mean with MC'ing? Mic'ing or what?
